As this science of immortality is exceeding esoteric and confidential, Lord Krishna gives the mandate as to those whom Śrīmad Bhagavad-Gita should never be imparted to:

1) atapaskāya means one who does not exercise control of their senses

2) na abhaktāya means one who is not a devotee of Lord Krishna or any of His incarnations and expansions.

A deeper interpretation is that it should never be given to one who has no love for Lord Krishna or any of His incarnation and expansions.

Even if one is aspiring to receive initiation as a Vaiṣṇava Brahmin; yet if one is devoid of loving devotion to Lord Krishna then the confidential teachings of Śrīmad Bhagavad-Gita should be restricted from them until qualified.

3) śuśrūṣave means one who's averse to submissive reverence to the spiritual guru

4) abhyasūyasi means one who is envious and blasphemous to the Supreme Lord.

To these four types of jīvas or embodied beings Śrīmad Bhagavad-Gita should never be disclosed. For whatever they would hear about the Supreme Lords glories and potencies would make such vile miscreants offensive in their attitude and actions.

The differences of case employed in the ablative form atapaskāya, abhaktāya etc. to the nominative form yo mam etc. is to emphasise the exceedingly despicable characteristics of those who are abhyasūyasi, who are just like poison vipers.

The exposure of the wicked is more imperious then the laudation of the virtuous as the wicked are most degraded.

“अतस्कायैव न वाच्यम् | अशुश्रुषवे पुनश्चेति दोषाधिक्यमशुश्रुषोर्दर्शयितुं च शब्दः | एवमभक्ताय कदापि न वाच्यम् | कदाचिदल्पतपमोऽल्पशुश्रुषोऽपि भक्त्याधिक्ये वाच्यं भवतीति कदाचनिति विशेषः | अभक्तश्च न वाच्यमशुश्रुषोति तत्रापि च शब्दः | समुच्चये तथाऽऽधिक्ये न्यूनत्वे च प्रशुश्रुष्यते | इति शब्दनिर्णये || अभक्तादपि पापः स्यादशुश्रुषोद्गुणं यताः इति च पादमे ||” - Not to be spoken who is not austere, to the one who is not devoted and is not obedient to the Teacher. Therefore, the affix cha is added. Similarly to one who has no devotion or commitment should this ever be spoken. However, if one is less austere or performs less service to the teacher, this may be spoken, if he has scope for more devotion or commitment in him. This is only to affirm that in the absence of devotion, this should never be spoken that the word kadaachana has been used. Similarly, in order to emphasize the non-disclosure to one who bears grudges towards the Lord, the word cha has been used. As conjunction as well as absence, the word ‘cha’ has been used. Thus in Shabda Nimaya. ‘Since the one who bears ill-will or always finds faults, is more evil than the one who is not devoted’, thus in Padma Puraana.

67 "This (teaching) is not to be, by thee, at any time imparted to one who is not leading a life of austerity, who is not a devotee, and who is not eager to listen: nor to one who traduces Me. (1486)

Now that Oh Pārtha, you have secured this (knowledge of) Gītā-Scripture with great devotion, you should not impart it to one who is devoid of austerity. Even were there (found) one leading a life of austerity, yet were he wanting in firm devotion to his preceptor, he (too) should be avoided (because he is unfit) as the Vedas do in regard to low-born ones. The food left over after sacrificial oblations should not be made available to a crow even though old in age: similarly the Gītā-teachings should not be imparted to one leading a life of austerity but devoid of devotion towards the preceptor. One who leads a life of austerity, and has also devotion towards God-Preceptor, yet if he is wanting in earnestness for hearing the Gītā-gospel, such a one is not eligible to hear the Gītā-teachings, even though he be held in reverence by the world on account of his possessing the above-mentioned qualities. However lustrous or precious a pearl might be, if it be without an aperture, would it be ever possible for the thread *(गुण) to find an entrance therein through it (for being used as ornament)? No one can dispute the depth of an ocean, yet do not the rain showers falling into it simply go to waste? Why not be generous and give food to one feeling hungry, rather than offer it to one with a full belly, and waste it? Take care that you do not even casually impart it to any one, who however worthy otherwise has not the least regard for it. The eye can appreciate (physical) beauty, yet what does it know of fragrance? In short, a thing becomes fruitful (only) where it is appreciated. Do show regard to persons observing austerity or having devotion, Oh husband of Subhadrā (Lord Krishna's sister), yet avoid such as have got no regard for hearing the Gītā (recited). (For instance) there is the austerity as also devotion, and further there is also intense desire to hear (the Gītā-teachings); with all this equipment (qualities) were one (possessing these qualifications) to talk disparagingly of Me—the Creator of the Gītā Scripture and the Controller of the entire Universe—and others that revile Me and my devotees—consider all such quite ineligible for imparting the teachings of the Gītā. The equipment in other respects is like a lamp-stand without a (wick and) flame during

* There is a pun on the word गुण (Guna) which means thread, and good quality or virtue. night time. Further there should be a fair-complexioned and a youthful body also bedecked with ornaments, yet with no life in it, or there should be a beautiful house built of pure and bright gold, yet it should be barred at its very entrance by a (venomous) female cobra; or there should be the best cooked food but mixed with venom; or there should be the secret malice in friendship. Of the type of all these are the austerities, the devotion, or the intellect of all those that revile Me and my devotees, know ye, Oh wise one. Therefore Oh Dhananjaya, do not allow such a devotee, or a man of intellect, or an observer of austerities, even to touch the Gītā-scripture. What more should I say? Were such a slanderer to be as worthy as even the God Brahmdev (the Creator the world) do not impart Gītā-teachings (to him), even in a joke.

'Idaṁ te nātapaskāya'—Here, the term 'idaṁ' (this), stands for the supreme secret 'abandoning all duties, take refuge in Me, alone' unfolded in the preceding verse.

Austerity, consists in tolerating pain and unfavourable circumstance, happily, while performing one's duty. The mind is not purified without austerity, and without purity useful advice cannot be accepted. So the Lord declares, that this supreme secret of all secrets, should not be revealed to a person, who is devoid of austerity. This secret of all secrets, should not be unfolded to one, who is devoid of austerities i.e., who is intolerant. This tolerance is of four kinds:—

(1) Tolerance in the pairs of opposites:—He should be free, from the pairs of opposites, such as attachment and aversion, pleasure and pain, honour and dishonour, praise and blame etc. Men of virtuous deeds are free from delusion, in the shape of pairs of opposites (Gītā 7/28): 'The undeluded ones, are free, from the pairs of opposites, known as pleasure and pain' (15/5).

(2) Tolerance of impulses:— One resists impulses of lust, anger, greed and aversion, etc., (Gītā 5/23).

(3) Tolerance for religions (doctrines) of others:— He does not doubt his own doctrine, nor does he criticize and condemn, the doctrines of others. He realises, that the discipline of renunciation and of action, are one (Gītā 5/5).

(4) Tolerance, in the progress of others:—He is not jealous and envious of others, when they progress or when they are praised and honoured (Gītā 4/22, 12/15).

A perfected soul, possesses these four kinds, of tolerance. One who aims at these, is austere, while he who does not aim at them, is not austere.

This most profound secret, should not be unfolded to one, who is not austere, because he will not believe it, and he will find fault with it and thus have a downfall. Secondly, a man whose aim is not to purify his propensities, conduct etc., may think that he need not grieve, because the Lord will liberate him, from all sins. By thinking so, he may be indulging in evil and may have a fall. So, the Lord directs Arjuna, not to impart this secret gospel to one, who is devoid of austerities, otherwise, he may misuse it.

'Nābhaktāya kadācana'—He, who is devoid of devotion and has no faith in God, should not be imparted this supreme secret, because he may see things in a perverted way (contrary to the truth), by thinking that the Lord brags, Who wants others to carry out His order, for His selfish motive. Such an unbeliever by belittling such teachings, would have a downfall. So this supreme gospel, should not be conveyed to such a man.

'Na caśusrūṣave vācyam'—This supreme gospel, should not be imparted to one, who is unwilling to listen to it, because he will turn a deaf ear, to it. Thus, he will commit a sin, which will be harmful for him.

'Na ca mām yo'bhyasūyati'—This most secret teaching, should not be imparted to one who finds fault with Him. He finds fault because his heart is very impure. By finding fault with him, he is deprived of the gain and rather has a downfall. This defect is sometimes, found even in devotees, who have faith in God. So strivers, should be aware of this defect. Such men who are free from criticism, are released from the bondage of actions (Gītā 3/31). Moreover, He also declares that a man who listens to this gospel with faith, being free from cavil, shall attain to the divine immortal abodes such as Vaikunṭha, Goloka etc., (Gītā 18/71).

When the Lord declares, that this supreme secret is not to be spoken to such a person, He does not want him to be deprived of this gospel. But he, without having faith in the Lord and His words, may regard Him, as boastful and selfish and thus by accusing Him may have a fall. So it should not be spoken, to such a person.

**Appendix**—The Lord has laid special emphasis on the point that the Supreme Secret word should not be mentioned to anyone who has no devotion or who finds fault with Him. If it is mentioned to anyone who has no devotion or finds fault with God, it is more blame worthy than if it is related to one who performs no austerities or who is unwilling to hear, because the intellect of the people, who are without devotion and who are of a fault finding nature, is perverted.

‘Abhakta’ means the person who opposes devotion. He, who lacks devotion, has not been called here ‘abhakta’. Even in devotees, out of ignorance, this defect of fault-finding can be perceived* but because of devotion this defect naturally perishes.

‘Aśuśrūṣave’ means the person, who is unwilling to hear, out of egoism. He who, out of ignorance, is unwilling to hear, has not been called ‘aśuśrūṣave’ here.

*Link:—In the next two verses, the Lord explains the reward of propagating this gospel of the Gītā, among his devotees and declares, that such a person is the most loving to Him.*

(18.1486) हे पार्थ! यह गीता शास्त्र तुम्हें आस्था द्वारा प्राप्त हुआ है इसे तपोहीन मनुष्य से कभी न कहना चाहिए;

(18.1487) अथवा, तपस्वी भी हो परन्तु गुरुभक्ति में शिथिल हो तो उसे भी ऐसे तज दो जैसे वेद शूद्रों का त्याग करता है;

(18.1488) अथवा, यज्ञ का शेष पुरोडाश जैसे वृद्ध कौए को भी नहीं दिया जाता वैसे ही गीता भी गुरुभक्तिहीन तपस्वी को न देनी चाहिए;

(18.1496) इसलिए हे सुभद्रापति! तपस्वी हो, भक्त हो, पर शास्त्र-श्रवण में इच्छा रखनेहारे न हो तो उन्हें छोड़ देना चाहिए;

(18.1501) देह गोरा हो, और अवस्था तरुण हो, तथा अलंकार भी पहने हो, परन्तु उसमें से जैसे एक प्राण ही निकल गया हो;

(18.1502) घर सुन्दर सोने सरीखा बना हो, परन्तु उसका द्वार जैसे कोई नागिन रोके हुए हो;
