The duties of the Brahmanas, the Ksatriyas and the Vaisyas, as well as of the Sudras, have been divided according to their inborn qualities, Arjuna. Subjugation of the mind and senses, enduring hardships for the discharge of one's sacred obligations, external and internal purity, forgiving the faults of others, straightness of mind, senses and behaviour, belief in the Vedas and other scriptures, God and life after death etc., study and teaching of the Vedas and other scriptures and realization of the truth relating to God—all these constitute the natural duty of a Brahmana. Exhibition of valour, fearlessness, firmness, cleverness and steadiness in battle, bestowing gifts, and lordliness—all these constitute the natural duty of a Ksatriya. ।४४।। Agriculture, rearing of cows and honest exchange of merchandise—these constitute the natural duty of a Vaisya (a member of the trading class). And service of the other classes in the natural duty even of a Sudra (a member of the labouring class). Keenly devoted to his own natural duty, man attains the highest perfection in the shape of God-Realization. hear the mode of performance whereby the man engaged in his inborn duty reaches that highest consummation. Man attains the highest perfection by worshipping Him through his own natural duties from whom the tide of creation has streamed forth and by whom all this universe is pervaded. । ४७।। Better is one's own duty, though devoid of merit, than the duty of another well-performed; for performing the duty ordained by his own nature man does not incur sin. । ४८।। Therefore, Arjuna, one should not abandon one's innate duty, even though it may be tainted with blemish; for even as fire is enveloped in smoke, all undertakings are clouded with demerit । ४६।। He whose intellect is unattached everywhere, whose thirst for enjoyments has altogether disappeared and who has subdued his mind, reaches through Sankhyayoga (the path of Knowledge) the consummation of actionlessness.

Lord Krishna explains that when buddhi or spiritual intelligence is unfettered, meaning unattached to desires and rewards and the mind is controlled and senses conquered,

with no conceptions of doership, established in renunciation even while performing prescribed Vedic activities,

one attains the supreme serene state of bhakti or exclusive loving devotion unto the Supreme Lord by dhyāna or meditation in communion with Him internally

as well as propitiation to Him with one's physical body externally such as japa or chanting His divine, holy names in ecstasy and promulgating His glories everywhere one goes throughout creation.

By the wonderfulness of bhakti the mind and senses are already controlled and conquered quite easily and have surpassed the limits of jñāna yoga or facilitating communion with the Supreme Lord by knowledge.

49 "With the mind everywhere unattached, with the Self conquered, and devoid of every craving: he achieves the highest Perfection of Actionlessness through Renunciation. (956)

He is not entangled in the snare spread out (exhibited) by mundane existence—the snare in the form of his body and the visible world in the way the wind is not entangled (in any net). As a fruit gets ripened it cannot remain attached to the stem, nor can the stem itself retain it attached to itself. In that way, the attachment for the worldly affairs on the part of such (a perfected one) gets relaxed and feeble (in his perfected state). He does not call "as his own" his son, wealth, and wife, although they are under his domination, in the way one never says that it is his own cup of poison and he would swallow it (poison). In short, the intellect feels a disgust for and recedes (recoils) from all the sense-objects as if they had scorched it (the intellect), and goes and enters into the solitude of the heart. Then even though the mind (of such a one) might be moving about and coming in contact with worldly objects, it does not even transgress the limits (set by one) like a faithful maid-servant who, out of feeling of awe, never disobeys her master's orders. He then holds the mind in the grip of unity and compels it to fix its gaze on the Self, Oh Kiriti. Then automatically die out all desires for (the enjoyment of) sense-objects either in this or in the other world, like the smoke when the fire is covered over and pressed down. The mind being thus restrained, the desires disappear of their own accord. In short the seeker attains the state of such signs, the semblance of knowledge arising out of Māyā (delusion) vanishes completely and the being secures a place in the real knowledge, Oh Son of Pāṇḍu. (The fruit of) his actions in the past lives is all spent up being enjoyed by the body-form, in the way the stored water supply gets exhausted by its (gradual) use, while the mind helps in no way in doing fresh actions (that could replenish the store of spent-up actions). It is through righteous actions, Oh Great Warrior, that the state of perfect equanimity is attained (साम्यदशा) and in such a state, the being, without any effort on his part, gets a vision of (meets) the worthy preceptor. The eyes get the vision of the Sun—the enemy of the darkness—with the expiry of four Prahars (duration of three hours each) of the night; or the growth of a plantain tree comes to an end, with the tree bearing a bunch of fruit; and similar result ensues in the seeker getting the vision of the preceptor. The seeker becomes fully perfected by the grace of the preceptor, Oh Warrior, in the way there remains nothing wanting in the Moon, viz. she gets into the full phases of her splendour, when she embraces the Full Moon—Light (पौणिमा). Nescience in its subtle form that still lingers in him, is all removed through the kind favour of the preceptor. Then, just as the darkness should all disappear along with the night, in that way the triad—action, the doing agent, and the instrument of action lying in the womb of ignorance, is killed just as a pregnant female should be slaughtered. With the destruction of ignorance the aggregate of actions also perishes automatically, and thus renunciation reaches up to the very roots. With the total elimination of ignorance from its very root through knowledge, also gets wiped out the very idea of mundane manifestation, and then what remains is the seeker himself as the object (worthy) of knowledge. Does a person ever try to rescue himself from a deep spot (in a river or a lake etc.) where he finds himself *in a dream*, after he gets awake? In that way, the dream 'I am ignorant and shall secure knowledge' ends and one himself becomes all-pervading knowledge, getting free from the notions such as the knowing agent or the object of knowledge. When a mirror reflecting one's face is removed far away, there remains behind, Oh Warrior, only the seer getting stripped off the act of looking (into the mirror). In that way, with the elimination of ignorance, the knowledge (the act of knowing) also gets eliminat- ed simultaneously, and then there remains behind, only the actionless sentience. The sentience being by nature actionless is, Oh Dhananjaya, called actionlessness. The original form (of the Self) gets restored, and the appearance of distinction born of ignorance gets eliminated, in the way the waves get extinguished into and become the sea itself with the stopping of the blowing of the wind. In that way, what emerges as the state “Not to be,” i.e. ceasing to be distinct, is what is called ‘Perfection of Actionlessness’ and it is the highest of all Perfections. To reach this state after the elimination of both the ignorance as also the knowledge is, what the top is to the edifice of a temple, or what the entrance into the sea is to the holy Ganges, or what the 16 points fineness is to pure gold. There remains nothing to emerge beyond, when this state is attained, and therefore it is called the Highest of Perfections.

Sannyāsa (Sāṅkhyayoga), is the means to attain, the supreme state. Now, the Lord describes the three factors in the first half of the verse which enable a man to practise Sāṅkhyayoga (the Discipline of Knowledge).

(1) 'Asaktabuddhiḥ sarvatra'—His intellect remains unattached, to incidents, circumstances, things, actions and persons etc.

(2) 'Jitātmā'—He has conquered his body i.e., he is not overpowered by heedlessness and indolence etc., rather he overpowers these. He performs prescribed duties promptly, and abstains from forbidden actions.

(3) 'Vigataspṛbaḥ'—He has no subtle desire, even to get the bare necessities of life, such as water, food, clothes and shelter. He is satisfied with, whatsoever, he gets.

It means that a striver, who wants to follow the Discipline of Knowledge (Sāṅkhyayoga), has to renounce his attachment

to matter and then he is endowed with, the above-mentioned, three qualities. If he is unattached, his body, senses and mind are subdued, and when these are subdued, he becomes free, from desire. Then, he becomes qualified to practise Sāṅkhyayoga, (The Discipline of Knowledge).

‘Naiṣkarmyasiddhiṃ paramāṃ sannyāsenādhigacchati’—Such a man, whose intellect is unattached, everywhere, who has subdued his self, from whom desire has fled—he by Sāṅkhyayoga, attains the supreme state viz., God-realization. The reason is, that actions take place in prakṛti (matter), not in the self. When a striver (the self), has not the least attachment for that action, the action or its fruit, does not affect him at all. So the natural state of detachment, and actionlessness, is revealed.

**Appendix**—‘Naiṣkarmyasiddhi’ means that an action should become totally inaction, there should not remain the least affinity with action; while performing an action; the striver should remain untainted (detached)—‘karmaṇyakarma yaḥ paśyedakarmāṇi ca karma yaḥ’ (Gītā 4/18). Non-performance of actions is not ‘naiṣkarmya’ (actionlessness) (Gītā 3/4), but it is necessary for a striver to perform action (Gītā 6/3).

‘Asaktabuddhiḥ sarvatra jītāmā vigataspṛhaḥ’—This is attainment of perfection (peace) by Karmayoga (Gītā 2/71), having attained which a Karmayogi follows the path of knowledge (Gītā 5/6) and attains the state of actionlessness by this path. In this way by Karmayoga, only actionlessness (naiṣkarmyasiddhi) is attained (the striver becomes free from the bondage of action) (Gītā 3/4) but by devotion he attains the supreme state of actionlessness (parama naiṣkarmyasiddhi). Karmayoga and Jñānayoga are the paths (niṣṭhās)—‘loke’smindvividhā niṣṭhā’ (3/3) but the supreme state (parā niṣṭhā) of Karmayoga-Jñānayoga will be attained only by devotion—‘niṣṭhā jñānasya yā parā’ (18/50). It means that both ‘parama naiṣkarmyasiddhi’ and ‘parā niṣṭhā’—both are attained only by devotion.

*Link:—Now, the Lord promises to discuss the process, through which man attains the supreme state of actionlessness.*
