‘Focus your mind on Me’ - enjoins the cultivation of mindfulness (Vedanā), which is expressed more explicitly by the terms ‘meditation’(Dhyāna) and ‘worship’(Upāsanā) —which is proclaimed in Vedanta texts. This meditation culminates in direct perception (Darśana) which is continuous mindfulness [of Krishna] full of ardent love.

‘Be devoted to Me’ —means practice continual mindfulness of Me, who am exceedingly dear to you, as you are incomparably dear to Me.

‘Worship Me’(mad yājī) —is a further application of being My devotee. Yajña here refers to worship in general and the desire to worship (Ārādhanā) follows the [realisation of] complete subservience to the Lord.

“Following these instructions you shall come to Me. I make this solemn promise to you. Do not take it as being mere rhetoric, for you are dear to Me”.

One who loves Krishna ardently, it also intensely loved by Krishna, and consequently, not being able to bear the mutual separation, Krishna Himself will make every effort to assure a reunion.

Otherwise how can one speak of the methods in battle? “By which the actions are renounced he comes to be known as the renouncer”, thus having further explained.

On verses 18.65–18.66

“अन्यधर्मान् परित्यज्येत्युक्तशेषत्वेनैव सर्वधर्मानिति वचनम् | मामेकं शरणं व्रज इत्यपि मनमनाः इत्याद्युक्तनिगमनात्मना तद्याख्यानम् | सवोत्तमत्वविज्ञानपूर्वं तत्र मनः सदा | सर्वाधिकप्रेमयुक्तं सर्वस्यात्र समर्पणम् | अखण्डा त्रिविधा पूजा तद्वैतैव स्वभावत् | रक्षतीत्येव विश्वसस्तदीयोऽहमिति स्मृतिः | शरणागतिरेषा स्याद् विष्णो मोक्षफलप्रदा || इति महाविष्णुपुराणे || अनादिजन्मकृतसर्वपापेभ्यः | अत्र प्राप्यभावात् | धर्मपरित्यागे पापापरित्यागस्य कैमूर्ध्येनैव सिद्धम् ||” - Renouncing all the constraints of the Perennial Principles, one should attain one’s self by whatever means. In this sense the words, ‘all the constraints of the Perennial Principles’ has been mentioned. ‘Take refuge in Me alone’ and ‘Fix your mind’ etc. are all the words of explanation. Knowing the supremacy of the Lord, one should always attune one’s mind towards Him. Then with commitment which is excellent than any other thing, one should surrender to Him entirely. The worship should be uninterrupted in three-fold manner - by mind, speech and action. ‘The Lord will then surely protect Me’, such confidence and that ‘I am the servant of the Lord’ such awareness is known to be complete surrender. This will alone bring from Sri Vishnu the fruit of deliverance. Thus in Maha Vishnu Purana. From the demerits committed in many previous lives not merely the ones committed in this life. Having said that all the constraints other than the constraints of righteousness should be given up, there is no necessity to mention that demerits also should be given up.

65 “Infix thy mind in Me, be devoted to Me, offer service unto Me, render homage unto Me: so wilt thou assuredly come right unto Me. This I promise thee, (as) thou art dear unto Me. (1353)

You do make me—the all-pervading God—the object of all your dealings, external as well as internal. The wind abides mingled throughout the sky, in that way you be within me in all your actions; Nay you make your mind my exclusive home (i.e. do not allow your mind to think of anything except myself at all times) and keep your ears stuffed up with exclusive hearing of my own praise. The saints purified by the knowledge of the self are but my own miniature forms: let your vision look fondly at them as a loving husband looks at his wife. I am the abode of all the objects and therefore (you) direct your tongue eternally to be fond of (uttering) my name, and keep it alive in that way. You do arrange all (your actions) in a way that all the actions of your hand and the movement of your feet, are all solely on my account. Whatever actions, Oh Son of Pându, you perform by way of obliging your own people (kinsmen) or strangers, will constitute the sacrifice through which you will become a good sacrificer, whom I shall own as my own. How far I should proceed teaching you things one after another? You do assume for yourself the position of a servant, and look upon others as my own forms and as such fit to be served. That will banish (from your heart) all hatred for beings and thus make you pay me homage (lit. salute) everywhere. Your life will be fully charged with my spiritual Presence. And then there being total absence of a third party in this buzzing world, it would bring about (the great bliss of) complete privacy for you and for me. Then, whatever state of things might arise, there would remain only Myself for you and yourself for me, to enjoy each other's company, and then our mutual happiness will automatically be enhanced: and then in that state, in which the bar in the form of the third party is removed, you will in the end be one with my essence, merging in my Person. When water is dried up, what is there to obstruct the reflection (that was in the water) from going and merging into the original disc (of the Sun or any other planet)? Or who is going to cause obstruction to the wind merging into the sky or what can prevent the waves merging into the sea? It is only on account of the body-form that you and I appear distinct: when therefore the body-form itself is eliminated you will be only myself and this is certain. (You) do not entertain any misgivings about what I say; I swear by you (to guarantee its veracity), should you feel any hesitancy about it. To swear by your name amounts to swearing only by my self; but real love makes one forget bashfulness! Otherwise, one who is the very object of knowledge, and who is above worldly affairs on account of whom this world semblance is felt real, and whose command conquers even the destroyer—that one-Myself-God, the Satyasamkalpa (सत्य संकल्प -one whose will cometh to pass) and the Father who is ever watchful in regard to the weal of the entire universe -why should He stoop to (such) objectionable swearing? But Oh Arjuna, I am fondly enamoured of you and have discarded the insignia of Godhood, with the result that I have become half (imperfect), while you have (on the other hand) become complete (perfected being steeped with my Spirit). This is like, Oh Dhananjaya, the king swearing by himself for securing his own ends'. On this Arjuna exclaimed, 'Oh God, you should not indulge in such extravagant talk: our cause (the goal of salvation) is served through the remembrance of your name alone. You have settled down here to advise me and while doing this you resort to swearing: where is (thus) a limit to such a humorous acting on your part? A small ray of the Sun blows open a garden of lotus flowers, but on that excuse the entire world gets lit. The clouds shower (copious) rain that cools down the earth as also makes the sea full of water; (to say that the rain comes for) satisfying the thirst of the bird Chakora is only a pretence. Is it not, therefore, incumbent to say that I am only an excuse for (the bestowal of) your generosity, Oh you the King of donors and the sea of kindness.' The lord said on this, 'Let that alone. This is no occasion for such a say (praise). The means which I have preached you will undoubtedly make you attain Me. A crystal of salt gets dissolved the moment it is dropped into the sea; is there any reason for its remaining undissolved? In that way by worshipping me everywhere in all created things (wherein my indwelling spirit exists) and seeing my Presence in all things, you will completely lose your egotism and be only myself. I have thus shown to you how the range of means goes on widening-beginning with action and culminating in attaining me. First you have to dedicate all your actions to me, Oh Son of Pāṇḍu, and then the Divine (lit. my) peace will descend on you at all times and places. Afterwards when you have got full realization of my knowledge through this grace (i.e. Divine peace) of mind, you shall assuredly be merged in my Divine Form. In such a state then, Oh Pārtha, there remains no distinction, such as the end (to be attained) and the means to attain it: nay, there remains nothing else for you to do. You have all along been dedicating all your actions to me with the result that you have today secured my grace and on the strength of this grace of mine, all obstacles in the way of fighting (on your part) will be removed. Once I am caught by fascination for you, I shall never leave you in the lurch. This is the doctrine of Gītā which I have delivered to you by advancing logical arguments backed by Scriptural authorities—the *Gitā* which is capable of destroying Nescience along with (the display of) mundane existence and which makes my sole Presence visible (to my devotee) in all things. I have (also) preached to you in various ways the knowledge of my 'Self', and with the help of that knowledge, I have enabled you to drop off all ignorance which has led you wrongly to this delusion (which makes you prate about) religion and non-religion.

'Madbhaktah'—A striver, first of all should change his egoistic notions ('I' ness), by accepting, that he belongs to the Lord. Without changing the ego, he cannot make speedy progress. By doing so, his progress in the spiritual path, becomes easy and natural. Hence first of all a striver should be devoted to Me.

A disciple accepts a person as his preceptor, and then he becomes of his preceptor. A girl after her marriage accepts her husband as hers, by changing her egoism and so she becomes attached to the family, of her husband. Similarly, a striver should accept that he is of the Lord only, and only the Lord is his; he does not belong to the world, and the world does not belong to him (when egoism changes, mineness also naturally changes).

'Manmanā bhava'—When a striver, assumes that he belongs to the Lord and the Lord belongs to him, He becomes naturally loving to him as He is his own and then his mind is naturally fixed on Him. In that case, he naturally thinks of His name, glory and sport etc. Moreover, he recites His name and meditates on Him, very promptly and affectionately.

'Madyājī'—When a striver, becomes of the Lord, by changing his egoism, he serves Him by performing actions. The more his intimacy with the Lord develops, the more devoted, he becomes in rendering service, to Him. That service, changes into adoration. So whatever worldly, household or bodily work he does, becomes worship of the Lord. He has a firm conviction, that he has to do nothing, except worship God.

'Māriṇ namaskuru'—A striver, by prostrating himself before the Lord, should totally surrender himself, to Him. In that case, he should be extremely happy, both in favourable and unfavourable circumstances, by regarding it, as gracious divine dispensation.

He holds, that whatever God does is, for his welfare, whether he understands it or not, as He is a disinterested friend of all beings. So, he should think, that the Lord, by creating desirable or undesirable circumstances, is absolving him of his good deeds and sins, and making him pure, so that he may be attracted towards His feet. This is prostration, before the Lord.

'Māmevaīyasi satyam te pratijāne priyo'si me'—Lord Kṛṣṇa, promises truly to Arjuna, that by fixing his mind on Him, by being devoted to Him, by worshipping Him, by prostrating himself before Him, he will come to Him* because he is dear to Him.

By the term 'Priyo'si' (thou art dear), the Lord means that every being (soul), is very dear to Him, because it is His fragment. He may, send it to eighty-four lac forms of lives or even to hell, but His aim is to purify it. This gracious dispensation of the Lord, towards all beings, reveals His loving nature. So Arjuna here, represents all beings.

Every being (soul), is very loving to God. A human being, having a disinclination for God, assumes worldly perishable things, such as wealth, property, family, body, senses, mind, intellect and life-breath etc., as his own, while the world has never accepted him, as its own. All the worldly things, are kaleidoscopic and perishable, while he himself is unchanging and imperishable. But he commits an error, by assuming his affinity, with the changing world, as eternal. This is the reason, that this affinity with a person persists, even when a person is dead. This assumed affinity, is the cause of his fall. He is free, whether he accepts this affinity or he does not accept it. So, by renouncing this assumed affinity, he should realize his real and eternal affinity with God and should take refuge, in Him.

Appendix—God is already attained to Arjuna; therefore

*If a devotee either fixes his mind on Him or is devoted to Him or worships Him or bows to Him—by practising one fully, the remaining three are naturally practised.

here the Lord by using the term 'māmevaiṣyasi' means that he will know Him in His entirety, about which the Lord at the beginning of the seventh chapter said, 'asaṁśayaṁ samagraṁ māṁ yathā jñāṣyasi tacchṛu.' Then Arjuna will have deep intimacy with Him viz., he will become the Lord's own self, about which the Lord said in the seventh chapter 'jñānī tvātmaiva me matam' (7/18); 'priyo hi jñānino'tyarthamahaṁ sa ca mama priyaḥ' (7/17) (viz., 'exceedingly dear am I to the wise, and he is exceedingly dear to Me').

*Link:—Having consoled Arjuna, in the preceding two verses, the Lord in the next verse, unfolds the supreme secret of all secrets.*

(18.1376) कमलों के वन को सूर्य की एक किरण प्रकाशित कर सकती है, परन्तु वह उसे सदा अपना सम्पूर्ण प्रकाश दे देता है;
