It should be clearly understood that whether confined to a physical body or a subtle body it is virtually impossible to entirely give up all action completely.

In the physical body the heart is beating, the lungs are breathing, water must be drunk, some form of nourishment must be ingested. If it is a subtle body then sunshine must be absorbed or Prāṇa or energy must be assimilated. These things are indispensable for life in a physical or subtle body.

Thus while residing in a physical body the observance of prescribed Vedic activities are essential and must be performed.

It is the renouncing of desires for the rewards of actions that is factual renunciation and not the mere abandoning of activities. Such renunciation also includes idea of authorship and the bane of attachment.

It may be argued that prescribed Vedic activities have rewards automatically associated with them, such as entry to Svarga the heavenly planets so by such inseparable relationships they are clear incentives.

This is also applicable to the merits accrued from nitya or daily duties and naimittika or occasional duties as well. These actions can be compared to planting a mango tree and the fruits can be considered the rewards thereof.

But motivation for the rewards of actions opposed to bhakti or exclusive loving devotion to Lord Krishna and is inimical to Mokṣa or liberation from material existence. Verily this is true.

So all rewards whether or not desirable or undesirable must be renounced as only activities performed without motive and hankering for rewards are to be enacted and this is actual renunciation.

By meritorious deeds done over different lives will not be used by him for enjoying insecure heavens. Knowing the fundamental principles the one, who offers them (his कर्म) to Sri Vishnu without attachment to the fruits of his actions, such one does not get bound (by his actions). However, performance of many actions may become reason for little demerits till one attains the knowledge of the Supreme.

11 "For, by one while dwelling within the body, it is not possible to renounce actions in their entirety. But he who relinquishes the fruits of actions, is designated the relinquisher. (218)

And, O Arjuna (सव्यसाची) anyone feeling an aversion for actions, having got into the body, must be taken as thoughtless. What would an earthen pot do by feeling aversion for clay? Or where would a piece of cloth be were it to hate thread? Would things holding fire in them feel troubled by their own heat? Or would a (burning) lamp ever hate light? How could asafoetida (हिंग) ever bring fragrance to itself simply by feeling disgust for its obnoxious smell? Or how could water exist leaving its fluidity? In all these ways, so long therefore as there exists the semblance of the body-form, what point is there in entertaining the silly ideas of relinquishing (all) actions. One can efface the mark (टिळा) on his forehead put by himself and put it there again and again; but could he scratch out the very forehead and replace it? In that way prescribed actions started by a person voluntarily, could at most be relinquished; but how could actions that are natural (automatic) in the body itself be relinquished? Actions such as breathing, etc. go on functioning even during sleep, and this holds good even in the case of the one who performs no action whatever. Thus activism in its entirety closely follows (the being) on the plea of his body-form. Thus neither the living nor the dead can escape it. There is only one device by which persons can escape from the clutches of activism in this world and it is this: One must not fall a victim to the greed for fruit while performing actions. When the action-fruit is dedicated to God, there dawns the realisation of knowledge through His grace, and when this takes place, nescience together with the actions gets destroyed through knowledge, in the way the delusion of there being a serpent gets removed with the knowledge of (its being) the rope; and the relinquishment that in this way takes place is the regular and proper relinquishment, O Pārtha. Therefore, only such a person who relinquishes actions is in this way a great and true relinquisher. Otherwise it would be like treating the unconsciousness on the part of a patient as being restful sleep, or like engaging oneself in another action (by way of diversion) getting fatigued with the first, and calling the latter as rest. But all this is like putting up with fist blows, in order to escape from the blows with a cudgel. Enough however of this. He alone, I repeat, is the (proper) relinquisher in all the three worlds, who has relinquished the action-fruit and (thereby) reduced activism to nullity.

'Na hi dehabhṛtā* Śakyaṁ tyaktum karmāṇyaśeṣataḥ'—Embodied beings, cannot abandon actions, because the body is an evolute of prakṛti (matter) and prakṛti is ever-active. So how

* Here the term 'Dehabhṛtā' stands for the embodied beings i.e., those who have identified themselves with the body.

can, an embodied being, abstain from actions? He may relinquish acts of sacrifice, gift, penance and pilgrimage etc., but how could he abandon eating, drinking, walking, sitting, standing, sleeping and waking etc.?

Again, internal relinquishment (relinquishment from the heart), is real relinquishment. External relinquishment, is unreal and temporary. A man, relinquishes external actions, in a trance. But this trance, is also an action, because in trance, affinity with causal body, persists. So there is deviation in trance, also.

No one can remain inactive, even for a moment (Gītā 3/5). Man, does not attain freedom from action, by non-performance of action, nor does he attain to perfection, by mere renunciation of action (Gītā 3/4).

A Vital Fact

A man being sentient, ever remains, uniform and immutable, while Prakṛti is mutable and kaleidoscopic. So long as, a man is attached to prakṛti and its evolute, the body, and identifies himself with it, he cannot abandon actions entirely, because he regards actions of the body, as his own.

Further a man has assumed his affinity with prakṛti, by neglecting discrimination. He has assumed the self, as the body and the body, as his own. It is because of the assumption of egoism, and mineness, that the embodied being cannot abandon actions, entirely.

'Yastu* karmaphalatyāgi sa tyāgityabhidhiyate'—He, who relinquishes his affinity for action and its fruit, is a relinquisher. So long as he has his affinity with agreeable or disagreeable, good or bad action, he is not a relinquisher. When a man assumes things and actions, as his own, he gets attached to them. Moreover, he is also attached to fruits, of those actions. But, as soon as,

* Here the term 'Tu' denotes that the person who relinquishes the fruit of actions is superior to common mundane people because his aim is God-realization or salvation.

his aim is to relinquish the fruit of action, all his actions are directed, towards the welfare of the world. The reason is, that he realizes, that he has received everything from the world, and so everything belongs to the world. Besides, actions and their fruits, appear and disappear, while he ever remains, uniform and immutable. Having this sort of discrimination, he gives up the fruit of actions, very easily. Such a person, who relinquishes the fruit of action, is called a relinquisher.

There neither was nor is, nor can be, nor is there any possibility, of affinity of the immutable self, with the mutable fruit of action. It is out of ignorance, that man has assumed this affinity. As soon as, this assumed affinity, is renounced, he is called a renouncer. This can be explained by an illustration.

When a person renounces his kinsmen and becomes an ascetic (saint), from his heart, prosperity, adversity or ruin of the family, makes no difference to him. The reason is, that he gives up his assumed affinity, with his family. This was a two-way affinity—from his side, as well as, from the side of the family. But, as far as his affinity with prakṛti is concerned, it is only he, who has assumed this affinity, prakṛti has not assumed it. So, if he wants to relinquish this affinity, he can relinquish it easily, without any doubt.

**Appendix**—This verse has been uttered from the viewpoint of Karmayoga. In Karmayoga there is renunciation of the desire for fruit while in Jñānayoga—there is renunciation of the sense of doership.

‘Relinquishment for the fruit of action’ means to relinquish the desire for the fruit of action. The reason is that the fruit for action can’t be renounced, as the body is the fruit of action, how will it be renounced? Having eaten food, hunger is satisfied, how will this satisfaction be renounced? Having farmed the land, how will corn be renounced? Therefore in the Gītā, renunciation of the desire for the fruit (of action) has been mentioned as relinquishment for the fruit of action.

In fact the external relinquishment is not real relinquishment but the internal relinquishment is the real relinquishment. If a person, having renounced the world, externally, goes to a solitary place, the body which is the seed of the universe, still remains with him. When a person dies, all things including his body desert him but death does not lead him to salvation. Therefore our desires, the sense of mine and attachment bind us, the universe does not bind us. When we do nothing for ourselves, our affinity with actions is renounced—'yajñāyācarataḥ karma samagraṁ pravilīyate' (Gītā 4/23).

*Link:—In the preceding verse, the Lord declared that he who relinquishes the fruit of action, is verily, called a relinquisher. What happens if he does not relinquish fruit of action? The Lord, answers the question, in the next verse.*
