- The Lord having spoken 'surrendering all actions to Me, with consciousness fixed on the Supreme Self' and 'This is My opinion' 'This is, what it is', the non-performance of such actions by one in furtherance of deliverance, may cause impediments. The performance of actions with the intent of surrendering them to the Lord, with the knowledge about the supremacy of Sri Vishnu, is known as the regulated form of the performance of action. The statement 'with consciousness fixed on the Supreme' Self' should be understood as referring to the knowledge of the principal form of the Lord. In the statement, '(surrendering) all the actions to Me' the consciousness fixed 'with reference to Me, with unbroken equanimity meditating on Me' thus having spoken. All such actions for communion with Resplendent Lord are said to be saatvic actions.

English24 *'That action which is done by one actuated by desire and likewise under self-conceit, and which involves much exertion; that is pronounced to be Rajas-dominated.* (595)
(Just as) a fool never caring to talk a single sweet word to his parents at home should behave quite courteously with the outside world, or one never dropping a single drop of water on a Tulsi (species of Basil) plants should pour milk at the root of a vine plant; similarly he never thinks of rising up from the place where he is sitting for the purpose of performing actions day-to-day and occasional that are obligatory, but he does not consider it (the exertions) too much even if his entire body gets spent up, when there arises the question of securing some selfish end: or as one should not say “Enough” while sowing seeds in order to secure bumper yield-crop, and should not similarly feel tired while investing money in business where there are prospects of making large profits; or one having secured a *Paris* (a stone supposed to convert by its mere touch iron into gold) spends his entire fortune in purchasing iron and becomes very prosperous: in all these ways, one (of Rajas quality) gets on performing fruit-motived actions that are intricate and difficult, and yet never feels them (those he has actually performed) as done in sufficient measure, keeping before his eyes the fruit to be secured from them. With the temptation of securing the fruit, he performs whatever fruit-motived actions he can, neatly and in the enjoined manner, and he goes on blowing his trumpet about whatever he does and goes on parading his name as an orthodox and pious man. Puffed up with the conceit of being a man of piety, he shows no regard either to his father or to his preceptor in the way the destructive (fatal) fever defies all medicines. Actions (are) performed with great liking by persons thus possessed of conceit and under the temptation of fruit and with great physical exertion as if they were the source of his very subsistence like that of an acrobat, or in the way a rat should excavate a mountain for securing only a single grain of corn, or a frog should stir up the entire sea for moss, or a snake-charmer should carry from house to house loads of reptiles getting in return nothing more than paltry alms—what a pity some people find pleasure in such exertions. The ants explore even the region under the earth (पाताळ) for the sake of a single particle of grain of that type is this toil helplessly done out of greed for heavenly bliss; and such pain-giving fruit-motived actions should be known as Rajas actions. Now hear the signs of Tamas (actions).

English'Yattu* kāmepsunā karma'—A passionate person, performs action to seek comfort, pleasure, honour and praise etc.
'Sāhāṅkāreṇa'—He feels boastful of his actions in public, when people praise him, and in privacy, by thinking that he is more prompt, sincere and honest in actions, than other people. Thus action performed with egoistic feeling, is called 'rajas'.
'Vā punaḥ'—The expression 'Vā punaḥ', (or again) has been used to denote, that action either performed for fruit (reward), or again by egoism, becomes *rājasika*. So, if it is performed both for fruit and impelled by egoism, it surely becomes *rājasika*.
'Kriyate bahulāyāsam'—While performing action, a man has to make effort and feel strain. But the man, who hankers after physical comforts, feels greater strain. On the other hand, a man who hankers after pleasure and prosperity, does not feel much strain, because he has a yearning for accumulating wealth and enjoying pleasure. So instead of physical rest, he has an eye on prosperity and pleasure.
A *rājasika* person, while performing action in public, does not feel great strain, because his sense of egoism, is satisfied. But when he performs action in loneliness, he feels much strain, because his sense of egoism is not satisfied, and he is ease loving.
'Tudrājasamudāhṛtam'—Action performed by a person, longing for fruit with egoism, and with much strain, is declared to be *rājasika*.
**Appendix**—A *Rājasa* man has so many demands and so he needs more things when he does any work, and he has to make more efforts in procuring more things. A *Rājasa* man extends his activities, therefore he has to make more effort. Being attached to
*The term 'Tu' has been used to denote that the *Rājasika* action is different from the *Sātuvika* one.
the body, a Rājasa man wants more physical comfort, therefore he feels more strain even while doing a little work.

(18.605) ऐसे अहंकार से जो फल की इच्छा करनेहारा मनुष्य आदर के साथ जो-जो क्रिया करें वह राजस कर्म है;

Sri Udiya Baba · Modern
Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
Continuing Lord Krishna affirms that actions done to acquire rewards and which are escorted with conceit and attended by ahaṅkāreṇa or egoism,
thinking that one is the actual doer and desirous of everyone to know, and which is accomplished only after great endeavour and expenditure of effort, is of the nature of raja guṇa the mode of passion.
