- satvam means the living creatures. To show that the liberated beings are not bound by the attributes, they are specially referred to as the gods on the earth. The liberated ones even though move about freely in this world they are not bound by the defects of the world. For instance even though noble people dwell in samsara, the primordial world they are unlike the common people dwelling in samsara. Among the taamasik the meanest are those whose minds are obscure even though capable of being luminous. The followers of the unenlightened asuras are those who are obscure though capable of being raajasik. The great asuras are those who continue to remain extremely taamasik, obscure. The raajasik are those human beings, among whom there are Brahmins (men of Wisdom) who are raajasik combined with satva. Among them the pure saatviks are known as Paramhamsa. Hamsa, Bahuda, Kutaja, Vanastha, Naisthika, Householders, these being in stages and in that order open to outside influences, their activities becoming progressively raajasic. The Paramahamsas are known by their serenity, self-control and outward marks of righteousness. In the case of the Gods, even though they are excessively energetic they are rarely endowed with any marks of raja. Because even when they perform energetic actions their mind is always in communion with Sri Vishnu. As far as others are concerned because of their indecisive, wavering mind their actions are normally marked as raajasik. But if their actions are attuned to Sri Vishnu, then these ones should be considered saatvik. Inquiry in Dharma and performance of sacrificial acts are the special attributes of a Brahmachari – one who is engaged in wisdom of the Brahman. Assuming together with wife the parental responsibilities and leading temporal life is the mark of a Grihastha, householder. Remaining aloof, giving up attachment to progeny and possessions, and being non-injurious to animals is the mark of one Vanaprastha, a forest-dweller. For the rest, the mark of a Sanyaasi, ascetic is similar and equanimous attitude towards all.
इति च ||” - The one who is saatvik could also be to some extent raajasik. Kshatriyas could be raajasik together with satva. Vaishyas and Shudras are normally taamasik, obscure with more or less of satva, luminosity. Amongst those who are devoted to the Resplendent One, such natural differences are visible. Having excess of satva, luminosity, even Pulaska (born in taamasik family) becomes entitled to be called the devotee of the Resplendent One. Those who perform actions commended in Vedas but are skeptical about the superiority of Sri Vishnu over all others, or consider others as superior to Sri Vishnu, are extremely energetic -raajas-raajasah. Those who are neutral, neither accepting the supremacy of Sri Vishnu nor despising him, they are said to be raja-tamasah. Ancestors, gandharvas and ancient seers and gods are all luminous, saatvik in three-fold manner, each one progressively superior to the previous one. Gods, Indra, Brahma are progressively to one another and Shiva Saraswati and Brahma are progressively superior to the previous ones. Luminous among the luminous, extremely and subtly luminous is four-faced Brahma. Such progressive gradation continues even in liberation. Even though the attributes do not exist in the state of liberation, gradation is determined by the extent of bliss which they revel in.
“विष्णो किञ्चिदप्रीतियुक्तास्तामममध्ये साच्चिका नराधमा इत्यर्थः | राजसानां मध्ये भागवता एव साच्चिकं विप्रादयः | राजसस्थसाच्चिकेप्येव शुद्धसाच्चिकाः इति वर्णभेदः | सत्त्वप्रधानत्वादे तानारभ्योत्तरोत्तरं सर्वेपि मोक्षयोग्याः | सत्त्वात् सञ्जायते ज्ञानम् इत्यादेः | सच्चाधिको मोक्षयोग्यो योग्योऽन्यतमसत्तथा | तम उत्तरो रजोभूयान् समो वा मृत्तिपात्रकः || इति ||” - Among the meanest of the human beings, taamasik ones are those who have least enmity to Sri Vishnu. Among the raajasik ones, the luminous are the wise ones devoted to the Resplendent Lord. The saatvik ones who are purely saatvik. raajasik ones who are saatvik to some extent, saatvik ones associated in equal measure with raajasik and those saatvik ones associated with taamasik become differentiated in classification according to the predominance of one or the other of the attributes. Beginning with the saatvic attributes each person becomes fit for deliverance starting from the Gods downwards. ‘With luminosity comes wisdom’, thus has it been said. Those who are more saatvic and similarly those who are not so fit go to the obscure darkness become fit for deliverance. Those who are more raajasic or the three attributes are more or less equal, they become the ‘nitya samsaari’, those who are ever engaged in temporal life.

English41 "Of the Brahmins (Priests), Kshatriyas (Warriors), and the Vaishyas (Producers and Merchants), and also of the Shūdras (Menials), Oh Tormentor of the enemy, the (respective) functions are differentiated according to the Guna-constituents which fashion their innate natures. (818)
If you ask me which are the four castes, they are those, the chief amongst whom are the Brahmins (Priests) in the forefront. Others are the Kshatriyas (Warriors) and Vaishyas (Producers and Merchants), who are also as high in position as the Brahmins, being qualified to perform rituals as laid down in the Vedas. The fourth, Oh Dhananjaya, are the Shūdras (Menials) who are not qualified (to act) according to the Vedas and have therefore got to be dependent on the three others for their living. But because the living of the Shūdras is linked with the three other castes, they have been included in the caste system and are made the fourth caste. The Shruti Scripture has owned the Shūdras along with the twice-born (द्विज) in the way, the rich ones, while inhaling the fragrance of flowers (of a garland etc.) also smell the thread on which they (flowers) are inwoven. Such is, Oh Pārtha, the arrangement of the fourfold caste system. I now tell you their respective functions, by performing which, all these four castes escape the pair of scissors in the form of birth and death, and attain Supreme Self. The three Guna-constituents, Sattva and others, born of my Prakriti have distributed in four lots the functions amongst the four castes. The father divides his self-acquired property amongst his sons; or the Sun shows the different ways to different wayfarers; or the master assigns several duties to his servants; in that way the Guna-constituents born of the Prakriti have made the distribution of the duties among the four. The Sattva quality has put under its supremacy the Brahmins and the Kahatriyas and has divided itself in two equal halves assigning one to each of the two. The Vaishyas have been assigned to Sattva and Rajas combined together, while the Shūdras (have been assigned to) Rajas and Tamas combined together. In this way, know it, that the three Guna-constituents, divided into four distinct castes the entire human order constituting one single group. The Scriptures show in detail the different functions covered by the three Gunas, in the way objects kept in the dark are found in lamp light. Now I proceed to explain the respective proper qualities (functions) of those castes and you the fortunate one (lit. the storehouse of good luck) do hear them.

English'Brāhmaṇakṣatriyaviśām śūdrāṇām ca parantapa'—Here, the Brāhmaṇas, the Kṣatriyas and the Vaiśyas are included, in one category, while the Śūdras are put in a different category. The former three are 'Dvijas' (Twice born), as they are eligible for initiation, and so they wear a sacred thread, known as 'Yajñopavīta', while the fourth, is not eligible to wear the sacred thread. For the latter different duties have been allotted, according to their caste, as ordained by scriptures.
'Karmāṇi pravibhaktāni svabhāvaprabhavairguṇalh'—Actions, which a man performs, leave their impressions in his mind, and these impressions, determine his nature. Thus nature which is formed by impressions of actions of innumerable life times, give birth to propensities, of the modes of goodness, of passion and of ignorance. The four castes—Brāhmaṇa, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya and Śūdra, and their obligatory duties, have been allocated according to the propensities of those modes (Gītā 4/13), because a man acts, according to propensities, of the mode he possesses.
An Important Fact
(1)
Actions are of two kinds (i) Those, that enable a being to be born, in high and low wombs (ii) Those, which create desirable and undesirable circumstances, and which have been called, good, evil and mixed, i.e., the threefold fruit, of action, in the Gītā (18/12).
A serious thought, reveals that all actions create desirable and undesirable circumstances. A man born in a high family, receives honour, while a man born in a low family, does not.
But, it is not necessary that the former is always honoured, while the latter always dishonoured. So far as the second type of actions, are concerned, they always create, either desirable or undesirable circumstances.
A man is free, in making proper use of both, the desirable and undesirable circumstances. Those who feel happy in desirable circumstances, and sad in undesirable ones, are ignorant, while those who use these as means for spiritual progress, are wise. The reason is, that this human life has been bestowed upon us, so that we may realize God. So, all the circumstances, are the means to realize Him.
Now the question arises as to how the desirable and undesirable circumstances, are conducive to spiritual progress. The answer is, that in desirable circumstances a striver, should serve others, while in undesirable circumstances, he should give up desire for desirable circumstances. Thus, both of these can serve, as means to progress, spiritually.
(2)
In the scriptures, it is mentioned that virtuous actions lead a being to heaven, evil actions to hell, while an equality of virtuous and evil actions, leads him to human life. It shows, that no man, can be either wholly virtuous or wholly evil. Out of those virtuous and evil actions also, in a certain field, virtues may be more, while in other spheres evils may be more.* Similar is the division of modes. Those who have predominance of the mode of goodness, go to higher regions, those, who have predominance of the mode of passion, go to the middle regions, viz., region of
* As in an examination an examinee may obtain poorer marks in a certain subject and better marks in other subjects. But the result is declared on the base of the aggregate marks. Similarly a man's virtuous actions may be more in one sphere while evil actions may be more in other sphere. It is the aggregate of the two which decides his birth. If the virtues and evils of different persons are equal in different spheres, they should receive happy and sad circumstances equally. But it does not generally happen. Similar is the case with the modes of nature as that of Sāṭvika etc.
men, while those having dominance of the mode of ignorance, go to the lower regions. Out of those going to a region, they are again divided into different categories, according to their qualities.
Those who have predominance of the mode of goodness, are born as Brāhmaṇas; those, who have predominance of the mode of passion and the mode of goodness, occupy the secondary place, are born as Kṣatriyas; those, who have predominance of the mode of passion, while the mode of ignorance is secondary, are born as Vaiśyas; and those, with the predominance of the mode of ignorance, are born as Śūdra. Out of these four Varṇas (castes) also, there are Brāhmaṇas of the low and high classes according to their birth. Moreover, favourable and the unfavourable circumstances are also different, in different cases. Similar, is the case in other Varṇas (castes) also. So in the Gītā, it has been declared, that there is no being, in the three worlds that is free from the three modes born, of nature (18/40).
Similar, is the case with animals and birds, etc., also. A cow is regarded as superior to a dog, a donkey or a pig. A pigeon, is regarded as superior to a crow, or a kite. All of these do not get, similar desirable and undesirable circumstances. It means, that among the beings of a region also, there is a lot of difference, in their circumstances etc.
**Appendix**—In the fourth chapter the Lord declared, ‘the four-fold caste (order) (varṇa) was created by Me, according to the modes of their nature and actions’—‘guṇakarmavibhāgaśaḥ’ (4/13); and here He declares that the respective duties of the four castes have been allocated according to the modes born of their nature—‘svabhāvaprabhavairguṇaiḥ’. In the fourth chapter there is mention of the creation of the four ‘varṇas’; while here is mention of the duties of the four varṇas. It means that in the fourth chapter the Lord explained that people are born in different castes (Varṇas) according to the modes and actions of the previous birth; while here He explains the respective duties of the people of the four castes, according to the performance
of their duties they will meet their end (fate).

(18.827) वैसे ही प्रकृति के गुणों ने इन चारों वर्णों में कर्मों का बटवारा किया है। (18.828) उनमें से सत्त्व ने अपने सम-विषम भाग से ब्राह्मण और क्षत्रिय दो उत्तम वर्ण उत्पन्न किये;

The word svabhāva means one's inherent nature. This inherent nature arises from saṁskāras or past impressions and karma or reactions from past actions and is the root cause of determining birth as a Brahmin.
The three guṇas or modes of material nature arising from prakṛti or the material substratum pervading all existence are determined by karma and samskaras as well.
The predominating attribute of the Brahmins or spiritual class is sattva guṇa the mode of goodness.
The predominating characteristic of the kṣatriya or administrative class is raja guṇa the mode of passion.
The predominating characteristic of the Vaiṣyas or mercantile class is tama guṇa mixed with raja guṇa and the predominating characteristic of the Śūdras is only tama guṇa.
Duties and responsibilities vary according to position and status in society as assigned by the Vedic scriptures.
It is the Vedic scriptures which defines what qualities are possessed by Brahmins and what are the duties proper to their status as well as what occupations they may engage in. This Vedic directive applies to the other orders in society as well.
