Lord Krishna uses the word niyataṃ, meaning consistency, and refers to the regulated performance of prescribed Vedic activities as a matter of duty, according to varṇāśrama the position and status one is situated in society.

The words saṅga rahitam means free from attachment and egoism that one is the doer. The words arāga- dveṣataḥ mean devoid of attraction to fame, power and an enjoying nature as well as void of aversion for defeat, failure and obscurity.

Acts performed without a mentality of attraction and aversion are without vanity and ego and bereft of desire for phala or rewards and are firmly situated in sattva guṇa, the mode of goodness.

- The Lord having spoken 'surrendering all actions to Me, with consciousness fixed on the Supreme Self' and 'This is My opinion' 'This is, what it is', the non-performance of such actions by one in furtherance of deliverance, may cause impediments. The performance of actions with the intent of surrendering them to the Lord, with the knowledge about the supremacy of Sri Vishnu, is known as the regulated form of the performance of action. The statement 'with consciousness fixed on the Supreme' Self' should be understood as referring to the knowledge of the principal form of the Lord. In the statement, '(surrendering) all the actions to Me' the consciousness fixed 'with reference to Me, with unbroken equanimity meditating on Me' thus having spoken. All such actions for communion with Resplendent Lord are said to be saatvic actions.

23 *'An action which is enjoined, and is done without attachment and without passion or aversion, by one who has no longing for its fruit: that is called Sattva-dominated.* (586)

(Such) action (as) of its own accord devolves on the doer according as the doer may be qualified to, in the way a chaste and loyal wife embraces her (beloved) husband. Such an action becomes an ornament to the fitness of the doer, in the way does sandal paste (decoration) to a dark complexioned one, or collyrium to the eyes of a young lady. Day-to-day actions (duties) are in themselves good. Coupling them to occasional ones amounts to adding fragrance to gold. A mother protects her child (even) at the cost of her wealth in the form of body and life, and yet her mind never gets tired of it. In that way he performs actions with heart and soul, without an eye to their fruit, and dedicates them wholly to Supreme Brahman; and good actions performed with even mind, feeling no bitterness in case the actions remain incomplete, or are not done at all, not getting elated at the successful completion—in the way the idea never even touches the mind of a gentle wife while serving a meal to dear ones (husband, children, etc.) that the food (supply) might all get exhausted or sufficient portion of it might not be left over for her use; so he should behave when pious men come (to his house) and should not mind the loss of his daily vows while honouring the guests. Actions, performed with such methods, are, Oh Dhananjaya, from their own Guna property, called Sattva-dominated ones. Now I shall explain the signs of Rajas-actions and (take care) that your attention does not slacken.

'Niyataṁ saṅgarahitamarāgadveṣataḥ kṛtam aphalaprepsunā karma yattatsāttvikamucyate'—Acts ordained by scriptures, according to a person's caste, (social order), stage of life (Āśrama) and circumstances, are 'Niyata'.

Here the term 'Niyataṁ' denotes, that the actions mentioned above, are to be performed, but actions that are prohibited by scriptures should not be performed.

Here, the expression 'Saṅgarahitam', denotes freedom, from a sense of doership. As trees, have no sense of doership when new leaves sprout, and when they blossom, similarly in the bodies different activities, such as digestion, development and decay etc., take place, naturally. So by realizing this fact a striver, becomes free from doership. Here, the expression 'Saṅgarahitam' denotes, freedom from doership, because freedom from attachment, has been mentioned by the term 'Arāgadveṣataḥ' in this verse. Moreover in Sāṅkhyayoga* it is absence of the sense of doership

*Here in 'Sāṅkhyayoga' the expression 'Saṅgarahitam' denotes freedom from doership while in 'Karmayoga' the expression 'Saṅgaṁ tyaktvā phalaṁ calva' (18/9) denotes freedom from attachments as well as from desire for

which is more important.

The expression 'Arāgadveṣataḥ kṛtam' means, that an action should be performed, being free from attachment and aversion viz., an action should neither be performed with attachment nor renounced, with aversion. Moreover, there should not be attachment or aversion for the instruments (body, senses and mind etc.,) in performing actions.

The expression 'Arāgadveṣataḥ' denotes, freedom from attachment at present, while the term 'Aphalaprepsunā' denotes, freedom of attachment, in future. It means, that an action should be performed, without any desire for fruit in future, and there should be detachment from action and objects. It has already been mentioned, that action should be performed, without having either attachment or aversion. Now He declares, that it is to be performed without attachment, in future i.e., without seeking any reward. Such action, is declared to be sāttvika. It is called Sāttvika, so long as, it is connected with prakṛti (nature), in a very subtle form. When its connection is completely renounced, this action becomes inaction or say it has no binding effect.

Link:—Now He describes the Rājasika action (action of the nature of passion).

(18.590) वैसे ही अपना सर्वस्व समझ कर जो कर्म करता है, परन्तु उस कर्म का फल दृष्टि के सन्मुख नहीं रखता, सम्पूर्ण क्रिया ब्रह्म में ही समर्पित करता है;
