The performance which is required to be done at the proper time but is performed after considerable lapse of time also suggests the meaning of ‘दीर्घसूत्री’. The सात्विक ‘दीर्घसूत्री’ is called ‘तामसिक’ because of his laziness. The one who is incompetent is ‘राजसिक’; the indolent and the unrefined is ‘तामसिक’, the one who does nothing but the malicious. The one who speaks ill of others is obscured amongst the obscure (तामसतामसः). The consequence of evil manhood is correspondingly the three-fold lower fruits.

English28 "One inadvertent, vulgar, stubborn, deceitful, perfidious, indolent, depressed, procrastinating: such an agent is said to be Tamas-dominated. (663)
The fire does not realize how other things get scorched by coming in its contact, or a weapon does not know how others get killed with the sharpness of its edge, or a subtle poison does not know how fatal it is to living creatures. In that way he (Tamas-dominated agent), Oh Dhananjaya, undertakes such wicked actions as are calculated to ruin others. While doing such actions, he pays no attention to the consequences (that might follow) like the (fitful) behaviour of a stormy whirl-wind. There being no co-ordination between his actions and their aim, even a person of unsound mind cannot stand comparison with him, Oh Dhananjaya. He maintains himself on the enjoyment provided by sense-objects, like a cattle-louse stuck up to the udder of the bullock (maintaining itself on the bullock's blood). He behaves waywardly like an ignorant child, which takes no time for changing from laughing to crying. He is never alive to the fact, whether a particular action is good or otherwise, having entirely gone under the sway of the Prakriti, and abides puffed up with false contentment like a dung-hill, with the result that he never bends low (in reverence) even before God through self-conceit, and excels even a hill in point of stiffness (hauteur). His mind is like the trodden black soil of the thief's haunt in a dense wood (राहाटी), while his vision is (as if) taken in mortgage from a harlot. Nay his very body is formed of wickedness, while the entire life is the very den of gamblers: his very sight is like a locality inhabited by the greedy Bhil tribes (highly criminal). No one should even approach his vicinity (way). Good actions of others (appear crooked to him), prick his mind like thorns, just as salt when mixed with milk makes it unfit for drinking, or an oblation (fuel stick etc.) put into fire suddenly blazes forth, becoming fire, or dainties of various sorts (swallowed and) entering into the body get ultimately reduced to excreta, so he receives mentally good actions done by others, but they are metamorphosed into their opposite (bad actions) when passing through his mind, Oh Kiriti. He transforms (good) qualities into defects and converts nectar into poison, in the way milk taken in by serpents is changed into poison. On occasions of the (likely) happening of events that lead to the fulfilment of the very object of one's life, in this world as also in the other, slumber automatically visits his eyes, (as if by pre-arrangement) which however flies far away (as if) for fear of getting polluted, when evil actions are in the offing. During seasons making grape and mango juice available, the crows are affected with the mouth disease, or the owls (should) lose their vision during the day-time; in that way laziness devours him whenever there presents an occasion tending to the securement of real good: but that very laziness leaves him entirely, in all obedience, when he is about to do some despicable act. He is ever possessed of malice, in the way the submarine fire abides (latent) in the sea. Throughout his life, he is full of gloom in the way there is copious smoke in the fire made of animal-dung, or there ever exists foul smell in the wind (Apāna) let out from the anus. He starts greedy transactions to an extent that would even serve him beyond the (current) Kalpa (age), and bears anxieties unknown to (extending beyond) this world; yet if actual results (of his acts) are seen not even a blade of grass accrues to him (comes into his hands). Should such a heap of sins incarnate come to be seen by you in the universe, take it definitely as a Tamas-dominated agent. Thus have been explained to you the signs of the three-fold kinds of the 'actions,' the 'agent,' and the 'knowledge,' Oh you Lord Paramount (चक्रवर्ति) of the Righteous.

English'Ayuktaḥ'—Tāmasa (mode of ignorance), deludes, all embodied beings (Gītā 14/8). A Tāmasika person cannot discriminate, between the proper and the improper and between, what should be done and what should be refrained from.
'Prākṛtaḥ'—Prākṛtaḥ or vulgar, is he who has not improved his life through good education, scriptures and good company etc. He possesses a childish nature, having no sense of duty.
'Stabdhaḥ'—An (arrogant) man, remains unbending with his mind, speech and body. He does not bow down to elderly people, parents, teachers etc. He is hard-hearted by nature, having no element of gentleness and humility.
'Śaṭhaḥ'—A tāmasika person, out of obstinacy does not follow good advice and good ideas, of other people. He out of delusion, holds that his own ideas, are good and he sticks to them.
'Anaiṣkṛtikaḥ'—A tāmasika person, does not return good, for the good done to him. He rather returns evil for good. Therefore he is termed as Anaiṣkṛtikaḥ.
'Alasaḥ'—An indolent man, does not perform his duty. He wants to lie down or to sleep or to remain idle.
'Viṣādi'—Such a despondent man, grieves day and night and his worries, disquietude, and sadness, know no end. Therefore all are in him automatic because he has no sense of duty.
'Dīrghasūtrī'—A procrastinating person, does not think how to perform action promptly and thoroughly. He takes a lot of time, in completing the work, which should have been done in a short time. Moreover, he does not complete it, thoroughly.
'Kartā tāmasa ucyate'—An agent who possesses the above-
mentioned eight characteristics, is said to be tāmasika.
An Important Fact
In the twenty-sixth, twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth verses, the Lord has enumerated the characteristics of agents. As is, an agent, so are his actions and so are the instruments to perform, those actions. So the sāttvika, rājasika and tāmasika agents, perform actions according to their own nature.
A sāttvika agent, by making his actions and intellect etc., Sāttvika, by rejoicing in Sāttvika happiness, identifies himself with God i.e., reaches the end of sorrow (Gītā 18/36). The reason is, that the aim of a sāttvika agent is God-realization. So, being free from a sense of doership and enjoyership, he identifies himself, with God, because actually he had his identity, with Him. A rājasika or a tāmasika doer, cannot identify himself with God, because he is engrossed in rājasika or tāmasika pleasure and his aim is, not God-realization.
Now, a doubt arises, that an agent can be sāttvika. But how are actions Sāttvika? The explanation is, that when an agent performs action without having attachment for it, without a sense of doership and without expecting any reward, the action, becomes Sāttvika. Such Sāttvika action does good to the doer, as well as, to the entire universe. It makes persons, things, objects, environment to which it is connected, pure (Gītā 14/6) as the purity is the characteristic of the mode of Sattva.
Secondly Patañjali holds Rajoguna (the mode of passion) only to be of the nature of activity (Yogadarśana 2/18) while in the Gītā recognising Rajoguna as activity also it is predominantly declared to be of the nature of passion (14/7). In fact it is not activity but passion (attachment) which binds.
In the Gītā actions are declared to be of three kinds—Sāttvika, Rājasika and Tāmasika (18/23—25) according to the feelings of the agent. The actions of Sāttvika, Rājasika and Tāmasika agents are Sāttvika, Rājasika and Tāmasika respectively. So the Lord
has not considered only an activity to be Rājasika.
**Appendix**—The term 'viṣādī' (gloomy or sad) should be included in Rajogunā but here it has been mentioned in Tamogunā. The reason is that the Tāmasa disposition is contrary to discrimination, therefore a Tāmasa person is more gloomy, more grieved than a Rājasa person.

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
