Lord Krishna is explaining that one whose cravings for sensual objects linger, the effort to overcome the senses without focusing the mind on the Supreme Lord is futile.

This is due to the fact that without the Supreme Lords grace the residue of past sensual activities and the pleasure or frustration derived therefrom will delude the mind to pursue sense objects.

This debilitating effect creates a magnetic attraction where the desire for sense objects becomes more and more extreme. From this extreme desire springs kāma lust.

Lust is the next stage of desire. Lust is that which one feels when they thinks that they cannot exist without their desire being gratified.

From lust springs krodha anger. Krodha is that frustrated outraged one feels against that which stands in the way of obtaining the gratification of ones senses.

From krodha arises sammoha bewilderment and delusion which is the mental condition where one is no longer cognisant of what action should be performed and what action should not be performed. One will foolishly do anything in this condition.

Thereafter comes dementia causing loss in memory of the process one began in order to constrain the senses and control the mind.

From dementia comes loss of willpower, one no longer has the drive and incentive to cultivate themselves towards obtaining spiritual realisation of the eternal soul.

When this happens then one perishes their spiritual opportunity being drowned again and again in samsāra the endless cycle of birth and death in the material existence.

“रागादिदीपकारणमाह परिहाराय श्लोकद्वयेन | सम्मोहो अकार्यच्छ | तथारि मोह शब्दार्थ उक्तं उपगैतासु सम्मेहसञ्चितम् अधर्मलक्षणं चैव नियतत् पाथ्यकर्मसु || इति | तथाचान्यत्र - सम्मोहोऽधर्मकामिता इति | समुतिविभ्रमः ऽ सर्वात्मना दोषबुद्धिविनाशः | विनश्यति नरकाद्यनर्थं प्राप्नोति || तथाह्युक्तम् - अधर्मकामिनः शास्त्रे विस्मृतिर्जायते यदा | दोषदृष्टेस्तत्कृतेश्च नरकां प्रतिपद्यते || इति |” - With these two verses, the origin for the defects and means of removing them are spoken. सम्मोह means the desire to create delusion. The sign of मोह is unrighteousness and the action towards inappropriate actions, thus in Upagita the meaning has been given. In other places सम्मोह is defined as सम्मोहोऽधर्मकामिना - unrighteous desire. Bewilderment of memory leads to destruction of intellect. Destruction of intellect is the non-awareness relating to the all pervading Self. विनश्यति means going to worthless worlds of hell. This has also been mentioned in other places. “अधर्मकामिनः शास्त्रे विस्मृतिर्जायते यदा | दोषदृष्टेस्तत्कृतेश्च नरं प्रतिपद्यते ||” - One who has unrighteous desires incurs forgetfulness of scriptures. Then due to defective perception and performing erroneous actions, he goes to lower worlds.

Even when knowing (rightly), one remembers it erroneously. Due to understanding the meaning of the statements erroneously, the conclusive wisdom also gets distorted.

On verses 2.62–2.63

62 "In a person constantly thinking about objects of sense there is born an attachment for them: from attachment springs passion; from (thwarted) passion arises wrath;

63 "From wrath ensues bewilderment; from bewilderment, confusion in accumulated knowledge (smṛti); from failure of accumulated knowledge, crash of discernment: with discernment crashed, he perishes outright. (321)

Even though there may be (mere) remembrance of sense-objects in the heart, it brings about association with them, even in the case of those that harbour no attachment for them. Such association directly creates passions and from passions arises wrath. From wrath ensues bewilderment. Bewilderment destroys memory just as a strong breeze extinguishes the flame of a lamp, or just as after sunset the night swallows the splendour of the sun, to that same state (the blankness) the being is reduced with the loss of memory. Thus blinded by the darkness of ignorance the intellect gets overcome with confusion. O Arjuna, the intellect then gets deluded and giddy just as one born blind takes to running and gets helpless and keeps on running about aimlessly, with the intellect getting hard-hit owing to loss of memory. In this way right thinking gets its bottom knocked off. Just as the body gets still with the loss of life so becomes the state of one with the loss of intellect. Therefore, know ye, O Arjuna, just as a spark when applied to a piece of fire-wood gets spread out and capable of reducing to ashes the entire Universe in the same way should the mind ever come to think even casually of sense-objects, it brings upon itself (such a big) downfall.

On verses 2.62–2.63

'Dhyāyato viṣayānpuṁsaḥ saṅgasteṣūpajāyate'—When a man does not devote himself to God viz., he does not meditate on God, he broods on objects of senses, because in that case there is nothing else to contemplate on, except the world. Thus, by brooding over them, he develops attachment for them. Due to this attachment he enjoys sense-objects. This enjoyment may be mental or physical. The pleasure resulting from enjoyment, enhances attachment. Due to this enhanced attachment, he repeatedly dwells on sense-objects. It is a rule that the enhanced attachment persists, whether he enjoys the sense-objects or not.

'Saṅgātsañjāyate kāmaḥ'—By developing attachment for

sense enjoyments, one has a desire to acquire and enjoy those sense-objects.

**'Kāmātkrodho'bhijāyate'**— Gratification of desire misleads to greed and one who creates an obstacle in the possibility of its gratification, becomes a victim of anger. The desire for respect and honour on the ground of caste, stage of life and virtues etc., also causes anger, if some obstacles are put in its gratification.

Desire is a rājasika trait; delusion a tāmasika one, and anger lies between the two. If you are angry with either, it means that you have attachment for something or the other. If you are angry with a man who defames you, it means that you are attached to fame. If you are enraged with a person who censures you, it proves your pride of innocence and so on.

**'Krodhādbhavati sammohaḥ'**—From anger, ensues delusion. In fact, delusion ensues not only from anger, but also from desire, greed and attachment.

(i) Delusion born of desire, veils discrimination and so a man goaded by desire performs undesirable actions.

(ii) Out of anger, a deluded person utters harsh and pinching words, to even friends and adorable ones, and performs wrong and cruel deeds.

(iii) Delusion born of greed makes a man blind and he cannot distinguish between the real and the unreal, the right and the wrong and he cheats others by using fraudulent methods.

(iv) Delusion born of attachment, creates partiality.

Now the question arises, why Lord Kṛṣṇa has said that delusion ensues from anger while it ensues from desire, greed and attachment, as well. If we give a serious thought, we come to know that goaded by desire, greed and attachment, a man thinks of his own selfish motive and pleasure, while in anger he thinks of doing evil to others. Thus, delusion born of anger is more disastrous, than that born of the other three. Therefore

Lord Kṛṣṇa has said that delusion ensues from anger.

'Sammohātsmṛtivibhramaḥ'—From delusion arises confusion of memory. It means that a man forgets his aim to attain salvation, or to follow the spiritual path, in accordance with the ordinance of the scriptures etc.

'Smṛtibhramśād buddhināśaḥ'—From confusion of memory arises loss of reason viz., a man cannot discriminate between right and wrong.

'Buddhināśātpraṇaśyati'—Loss of discrimination paves the way to self-destruction.

Therefore, it is obligatory for all strivers to devote themselves heart and soul to God, in order to escape self-destruction.

Brooding on the objects of senses, leads to attachment; attachment leads to desire; desire to anger; anger to delusion; delusion to loss of memory; loss of memory to loss of reason and finally, loss of reason leads to utter ruin. Though, it takes time to describe this order yet the rise of these propensities leading to the destruction of man is, as fast as death caused by an electric shock.

Link:—Lord Kṛṣṇa, in the next verse, answers the fourth question—How does a man of steadfast wisdom walk?

(2.326) जैसे जन्मान्ध को कभी दौड़कर भागना पड़े तो वह दीनता से इधर-उधर दौड़ता है वैसे ही, हे धनुर्धर! बुद्धि भी चक्र में पड़ जाती है;

On verses 2.62–2.63
