न च ज्ञानिनां भगवन्महिमादिश्रवणे विरक्तिभावति - आत्मारामाहि मुनयो निर्ग्राह्या अप्युरकिमे | कुवन्त्यहेतुकी भक्तिमिथ्यभूतगुणो हरिः || इति वचनात् | अनुष्ठानाश्च शुकादीनाम् | न च तेषां फलं नाति | तस्यैव महसुखत्वात् तेषाम् - या निवृत्तिस्तुभूतं तव पादपादमध्यानाद् भवज्जनकथाश्रवणेन वा स्यात् | सा ब्रह्मणि स्वमहिमन्यन्ति नाथ मा भूतं किम्बन्तकासिलुल्लितात् पततां विमानात् || इत्यादिवचनात् तेषामप्युपासनादिफलस्य साधितत्वात् ||” - The reply to the question how far such actions are necessary for a person keen for deliverance is contained in this verse. निर्वेदम् means complete indifference. Normally it is said, ‘तस्माद् ब्राह्मणः पाण्डित्यं निवेद्य ...’ - therefore, a Brahmin acquiring wisdom should remain as a child, as it were. There, the word renunciation has not been suggested. Therefore, the word should, verily, be understood as becoming indifferent by means of wisdom. Not that the men of wisdom are averse to listening the glory etc. of the Lord. The sages immersed in the enjoyment of the Self, even though mentally controlled, they do advance though devotion which without any desires, Sri Hari being so attracted by creatures due to His attributes, thus having been in Bhagavata Puraana. Even so are the religious performances of Shuka and others. Not that there is no satisfaction for them. For them surely is the great happiness. “For those who have renounced, meditation on your lotus feet, and listening your glory and that of your devotees, brings about the satisfaction, which would not be available even to a fully realized soul. What then to be spoken about those dwellers of heaven who return having fallen from divine aerial vehicles”, from such other statements also. For them (the men of Wisdom) the result of उपासना and other acts, the same is possible.
If there be no gradation, “the wise would not respect My Grace which is the cause of liberation”. “No one will crave similarity with Me”. “Even if similarity is granted they would not be accepted”. Thus even for those not desiring liberation, deliverance alone is the fruit (of devotion). And for those who so desire, it (deliverance) comes about with auspicious marks. How do distinctive marks are seen even though not so desired. Even as the special devotion to the Supreme Person is perceived here, even so distinctive deliverance for the wise, after the deliverance of the body. Even so for the ascetics, with severance of their body. Even for them who had supreme bliss with the distinct character as form of experience, gradation does ever exist”. In deliverance by whatever means, no one else will surpass you, for you alone will surpass all by your devotion and wisdom. This statement of equipoise is subject matter of abundance; and similarity even in experience of misery. ‘Even tough absence of misery, abundance of equipoise and severance of body are all equally similar, even then for Supreme Bliss, the distinctive nature of wisdom is the main instrument for severance, thus, in Narayanaashatakshara Kalpa. Hence, renunciation etc. is not referred in Scriptures. There also does not exist any limit to any other methods. Therefore, the clarification is that, 'Listening to the words of the great souls to be spoken and to be listened, the fruits of Vedas will be gained'. The same is again clarified in this verse. When the intellect vitiated earlier by contradictory arguments, becomes stabilized through proper interpretation of the Vedas and equanimity of intellect becomes unshakable. Like the resonance of the drums, one attains with intense concentration on the bliss of Brahman communion. This is the meaning.

When there is no intellectual delusion, or other signs of non-awareness then the human being acquires the beneficial fruits of listening Vedas. Then accepting the Path laid down by the Vedas the uncompromising meaning thereof is acquired. Again, there would be unsurmountable satisfaction of spiritual experience. Thereby through steady mind and equanimity with Sri Vishnu one will be liberated. Thus, in Paingi scripture. 'shrutipratipanna' means having fully assimilated the meaning of the Vedas.

English53 "When thy Discerning-power, confounded by (dissentious) Scriptures, endures, steadfast and unmoving, in an enrapt-concentration (samādhi) then wilt thou attain 'Yoga.'" (283)
The confounded state of the mind's power brought about by its association with the senses will afterwards be set right and your mind will look at the Supreme Self steadily and as a whole. When the discerning power gets perfectly peaceful and settled in an enrapt-concentration (समाधि) then only you will have attained the Yoga.

English[After crossing the mire of delusion also, there may be confusion of mind by hearing conflicting spiritual doctrines. So Lord Kṛṣṇa induces Arjuna to get rid of that confusion.]
‘Śrutivipratipannā te yadā sthāsyati niścalā samādhāvacalā buddhistadā yogamavāpsyasi’—Arjuna was in a fix, whether he should perform his duty as a Kṣatriya or he should avoid the slaughter of his kith and kin. If he protected his family, he would shirk his duty. If he performed his duty of fighting, then the family would not be protected. So he was bewildered.* Therefore Lord Kṛṣṇa persuades Arjuna to keep the intellect firm in case of scriptural opinions and steady in regarding God-realization.
First of all, a striver is unable to make up his mind whether to have honest and sincere dealings with the worldly people, or to attain God. Then he decides that he has to render selfless service to the world. Having taken this decision, he starts showing indifference and dispassion to the worldly pleasures. Then in the spiritual path he comes across different opinions of the scriptures. So it becomes difficult for him to decide, which opinion he should follow. In that case by good company or faith etc., he is either able to take the decision or he surrenders himself to God. Then by God’s grace his intellect becomes firm. Secondly, in all the scriptures and religions, God, soul and the world, have been described in different forms and ways. But all of them agree, “I am soul, not body,” “The world is to be ignored”, “God is to
* A person may be in a dilemma in two ways—in worldly affairs and in scriptural ordinances or sects such as dualism and non-dualism etc. It is more difficult to be free from the dilemma of the scriptural ordinances than from that of the worldly affairs. So Lord Kṛṣṇa explains that a striver should have a determinate intellect that he has to realize only God whatsoever may happen.
be realized.' By taking this decision the intellect of the striver becomes steady. Then he realized God easily. So the only obstacle to God-realization is lack of firmness of intellect.
The greater the deficiency in reaching at a decision regarding the contrary spiritual doctrines and in his own emancipation, the greater the delay there is. But in both cases as soon as the intellect becomes steady and determinate, eternal union with God is realized.
The intellect should be unshakable in order to renounce affinity for the world, as mentioned by the expression 'state of severance from union with pain,' in the twenty-third verse of the sixth chapter; while it should be steady in order to have affinity for God as expressed by the expression 'evenness of mind is called Yoga', in the forty-eighth verse of the second chapter.
Here in 'tadā yogamavāpsyasi' Yoga, means to become established in union with God, from whom there is no disunion. Only the striver has to abandon his affinity with the unreal. This union can be realized either by selfless service viz., Discipline of Disinterested Action, or discrimination viz., Discipline of Knowledge, or love for God viz., Discipline of Devotion, or meditation or annihilation of the world viz., Discipline of Annihilation (Layayoga) or by the process of restraining breath viz., Discipline of Austerity (Haṭhayoga) etc.
**Appendix**—There are two divisions of delusion—'mohakalila' viz., the worldly delusion and 'śrutivipratipatti'—scriptural (philosophical) delusion. Attachment to the body, wife, sons, wealth, property etc., is 'worldly delusion' and 'Dvaita' (dualism), 'Advaita' (non-dualism), 'Viśiṣṭādvaita' (qualified dualism) and 'dvaitādvaita' (dualism-non-dualism)—to get entangled in these 'isms' is 'scriptural delusion'. By renouncing these two types of delusion, a man gets detached from pleasures and his intellect becomes stable. When the intellect becomes stable, 'Yoga' is attained viz., the distance from God comes
to an end and you come near to God. By 'Karmayoga' you come near God, by 'Jñānayoga' difference is wiped out and there is 'Abheda' and by 'Bhaktiyoga' there is 'abhinnatā' viz., the devotee becomes God's own self. By attaining perfection in either Karmayoga or Jñānayoga, a striver gets the fruit of both (Gītā 5/4-5).
If a person has the only aim of salvation and has no selfish motive by having affinity for wealth-property and family-relatives etc., then he crosses the worldly delusion. If he does not want to gain bookish knowledge (rot-learning) by studying the scriptures but has the only aim to realize the self, he crosses the scriptural delusion. It means that a striver, should neither be enamoured by the worldly delusion nor by the scriptural (philosophical) differences of opinions viz., he should not insist on any sect or religion. Thus he becomes eligible for 'Yoga', salvation or devotion. Besides this there is no need of any special eligibility (qualification).
*Link:—Arjuna then puts the question about the illumined one whose intellect has crossed the mire of delusion and who has become steadfast and firm on God.*

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
Lord Krishna begins this verse with the word śruti. Śruti refers to Vedanta which implies Śravaṇam or hearing from them.
For it is by the hearing of transcendental instructions that the mind is evolved as it begins to reflect and contemplate on the immortal, incomparable and exceedingly subtle nature of the eternal soul.
When this consciousness which is by its very nature is steadfast and stable is firmly rooted within a mind purified of all dross and selfish actions, then at that time one shall achieve yoga and realise enlightenment.
The understanding is that by practice in performing activities in the selfless parameters of karma-yoga with knowledge of the eternal soul as revealed in the Vedic scriptures develops an illumination in consciousness called sthita-prajnata and that by sustained effort of this consciousness one is gradually achieves self- realisation.
Hearing this Arjuna next desires to understand the components of this unique consciousness:
Is it achieved by willpower, by yoga, by knowledge of the soul, by detachment or is it a combination of all of the above?
This Arjuna will question in the next verse.
