On verses 2.1–9

Thus, the Lord, the Supreme Being, introduces the teaching regarding the Self for the sake of Arjuna whose natural courage was lost due to love and misplaced compassion.

Arjuna considered the war to be unrighteous even though it is the greatest duty for warriors (Kṣatriyas). He then took refuge in Śrī Krishna to learn what the correct course of action was.

Śrī Krishna understood that Arjuna's delusion would only be overcome by the knowledge of the real nature of the Self,

and the knowledge that war (action) is an ordained duty [for Kshatriyas] which, when performed without attachment to the fruits thereof is a means for Self-realisation.

4 Arjuna spake—“How shall I, in battle, O Slayer of Madhu, assail with the arrows Bhīṣma and Droṇa, worthy of worship as they are, O Smiter of foes? (30)

“Lord, now hear. This long talk is indeed not necessary; first of all do consider if this could be called a war. This is no war but a crime, despicable if committed, for thereby, we would be openly slaughtering our preceptors. Are parents to be adored, served, kept entirely pleased and then to be killed with our own hands? The saints are to be bowed to, and if possible to be adored. Should they also be spoken to in slanderous terms instead? Similarly these our family preceptors are always to be adored; especially my debt to Bhīṣmācārya, and Droṇa is immense. How should I directly destroy them in the battle,—those about whom I cannot think ill even in a dream? Fie upon me that I should glory in utilising that art of handling weapons in killing the very preceptors who taught that art to me. I, Arjuna, am the disciple of Droṇa who taught me completely the art of using arms: Should I repay the debt of my gratitude to him by killing him? Arjuna added, “Should I act like Bhasmāsur (भस्मासुर) by playing false to the revered Master through whose favour I secured all the boons?”

[Arjuna addresses the Lord as 'Madhusūdana' and 'Arisūdana', because he had killed unrighteous, villainous and cruel demons, such as Madhu etc., and foes also who always are jealous of others, without rhyme or reason. But how can he kill his great well-wisher, the respected grandfather Bhīṣma, and adorable preceptor Droṇa, who have great affection for him?]

'Katham bhīṣmamaham saṅkhye droṇam ca'—I am not turning away from war because of faint-heartedness, but because it is unrighteous for me to fight, with the revered grandsire Bhīṣma and venerable teacher Droṇa. I would be called unmanly if I were afraid of death. I am not afraid of dying but I do not want to kill my venerable elders, who have always been very affectionate to me.

Grandfather Bhīṣma, has loved me since my childhood. When I addressed him as father, he very affectionately used to say, that he was my father's father. Similarly, my adorable preceptor Droṇa, has been so kind to me that he imparted to me better training, than he imparted even to his son. He taught the use of Brahma-weapon, (a kind of weapon which caused infallible destruction and set in motion by incantation) to both of us, but as far as its control or end is concerned, he taught that only to me, not to his son. He also granted me a boon that no one would excel me, in military science. So it is a mortal sin, to wage war against them.

'Iṣubhiḥ pratiyotsyāmi pūjarhau'—Both Bhīṣma and Droṇa being elderly are venerable and adorable. They have a right to attack me. But it is a deadly sin for me to fight against them with my arrows.
