Madhva BhāṣyaSanskritEnglishOn verses 2.26–2.28
– Thus even though the self is eternal, because of its association and dis-association with body (experiences as it were), birth and death as being certain. Thus He speaks in the verse. Why should one not grieve? Because of it (death) being according to Cosmic Order, thus he says in the verse. In this manner, He explains in the verse ‘अव्यक्तादीनि’.

Gītā Tātparya NirṇayaSanskritEnglishOn verses 2.26–2.28
Thus exists this expansive samsara. Until the Jiva finds deliverance, birth and death (of the body) are according to (Cosmic) order, and which you, Arjuna, would agree as the natural order. Therefore, even after such little knowledge, you do not deserve to get worried. “Eternal, permanent (it is) said to be, and also eternal and ever according to Cosmic order” thus according to Shabda Nirnaya. Here (also) it is according to Cosmic Order. . ‘For one who is born,(death) is certain...’ thus having been expressed. Therefore, in this context there is no cause to be surprised.

English28 "For, non-manifest is the initial stage of the created things; manifest is their middle stage, O Scion of Bharata: and non-manifest also their final stage: what is there for lamenting in such a case? (164) All these living beings had no form before their birth. They received their individual forms with their births. Similarly when they die, then also they will have no other state, but have to return to their former (formless) condition. That which becomes manifest between birth and death is the body-form, which, through delusion is felt as being possessed by the Soul, just as the dream, although an illusion, appears to be real to the one asleep. Or, just as the water appears wavy, when a breeze causes it to move or gold takes the form of an ornament at the will of others, in the same way this world appears in (various) forms through illusion, as the sky gets screened by clouds. Why do you lament for that which has even no beginning (आदिची नाहीं). Keep your gaze fixed only on (the Supreme Spirit) Brahman that is imperishable; that Brahman on which the devotees concentrate their minds, and get emancipated from illusion; that (Supreme Power) Brahman, for reaching whom truth-seekers, becoming desireless, seek refuge in forests. Great sages leading a dedicated life of celibacy and practising various other penances concentrate their vision on it (Supreme Power).

English'Avyaktādini bhūtāni'—All the beings seen now, were not perceived before birth.
'Avyaktanidhanānyeva'—These beings will also not be perceived after death.
'Vyaktamadhyānī'—All these beings are manifest in the interim (after birth and before death). Their bodies were non-existent before birth and will remain non-existent after death, just like in a dream. During life they seem to exist but actually they are going into non-existence every moment.
'Tatra kā paridevanā'—It is the principle that the thing which does not exist either before or after has no real existence in its midstate also. Therefore, these bodies which were unmanifest in their origin and will be unmanifest in their end, are unmanifest even now, though they seem visible. But the soul existed in the past, exists now and will also exist in future. So there is no point in lamenting for both these situation.
Appendix—A thing, which does not exist at the beginning and at the end, has never any existence, while a thing, which exists at the beginning and at the end, ever exists.* That which never exists, is 'asat'—unreal (body) and the entity which ever exists, is 'sat'—the reality. We have our eternal disunion with the unreal while with the real we have our eternal union.
* (1) 'yastu yasyādirantaśca sa vai madhyam ca tasya san'
(Śrīmadbhā. 11/24/17)
'The thing which exists at the beginning and at the end, also exists in the midstate and that is true.'
(2) 'ādyantayorasya yadeva kevalam kālaśca hetuśca tadeva madhye'
(Śrīmadbhā. 11/28/18)
'The entity which existed at the beginning of this world and which will remain in the end and which is the root cause and illuminator of this world, the same Super Soul (God) also exists in the midstate.'
(3) 'na yat purastāduta yanna paścāṇmadhye ca tanna vyapadeśamātram'
(Śrīmadbhā. 11/28/21)
'The thing which didn't exist before origin and will not remain after annihilation (end), doesn't exist in the middle also, it is merely an imagination, merely a name.'

Living entities like human beings though eternally existing due to the auspices of each one's eternal soul have an unknown origin before birth, a manifest condition from birth to death and proceed again to an unknown existence at the termination of the physical body.
Such alternations constitute material existence and are a natural law. This then gives no cause to grieve.
Having just shown that even if one erroneously was under the misapprehension that the physical body itself and the eternal soul are the same; there is still no reason to grieve as in the next verse 29 it is declared
that very rarely is a person found who would see, hear, converse, or who could be convinced about the wonderful nature of the eternal soul which is factually distinct from the physical body.
