The word suhru refers to one who taking no umbrage in differences of age wishes one well.

The word mitra denotes a friend of equal age who wishes one well.

Āry is one who wishes one ill.

udāsīna is a stranger who has no cause to be a friend or a foe.

madhyastha is neutral one who from birth was never a friend or a foe.

Dveṣya is one who was born as an enemy and bears ill will from birth.

bandhuṣu is a relative who bears good will from birth.

sādhuṣu are the saintly and virtuous who follow the path of righteousness.

pāpeṣu are the vile and wicked who follow the path of iniquity.

A yuktah as referred to by Lord Krishna in the previous verse is one who has completely abandoned material pursuits and has ceased from all relationships with the world.

Such a person has nothing to gain therefore nothing to lose and views all with equal vision in equanimity.

“स एव च सर्वस्माद् विशिष्यते साधुपापादिषु समबुद्धिः | जीवचितः परमात्मनः सवस्य तन्निमित्तत्वस्य च सर्वैत्रैकस्येण | चिद्रूपा एव हि जीवाः | विशेषस्त्वन्तः करणकृतः | सर्वेषां च साधुत्वादिकं सर्वमीश्वरकृतमेव स्वतो न किञ्चिदपि ||” - He, verily, is amongst all the distinctive one, equal towards the noble and the evil. The consciousness in Jiva is the Supreme Self, being common medium in all beings and in forms. Jiva is, verily, the form of Consciousness. The distinctiveness is due to inclination. Attributes of nobility etc. in all of them is due to action of the Lord or their own.

The defects among the Jivas are said to be due to the internal inclination. All are created by the Lord; nothing by themselves. They are all same in their essence; the seeming differentiation is because of distinctive attributes. Inequality amongst them is due to delusion. Thus all human beings are essentially same. The divinities belong to special category and such special features for them are natural and eternal. The defects among the demons are also natural to them and eternal. The attributes and defects among human beings are natural and eternal. Only the Gods remain with the same attributes for all the time, thus in Brahma Puraana.

That will then be an error. If people of equal qualification are worshipped unequally and similarly those of unequal gradation equally, then they, even though they be Gods, will be removed from their status, thus in Brahmanda Puraana. The Wealthy, the Kinsman, the Elders, the Qualified and the Learned all these are venerable in their places, the subsequent one being superior to the previous one, thus, in Manu Smriti. Whoever honours all the creatures with equal eye, knowing their essential attributes, Sri Vishnu will be pleased with him. The distinction between the people due to the differences in worship, will not be painful if they are seen with equanimous perception, thus in Brahma Vaivarta Puraana.

“मुद्दादिषु शास्त्रोक्तपूजादिकृतिरन्यूनानधिका या साऽपि समता | तदप्याह - “यथा मुहत्सु कर्तव्यं पितृशत्रुमुतेषु च | तथा करोति पूजादि समबुद्धिः स उच्यते || इति गारुडे || प्रत्युपकारनिरपेक्षयोपकारकृत् मुहत् | केशस्थानं निरूप्य यो रक्षां करोति तन् मित्रम् | अरिर्वधादिकृत् | कर्तव्यं उपकारेऽपकारे च य उदास्ते स उदासीनः | कर्तव्यमभयमपि यः करोति स मध्यस्थः | अवासीकृत् द्वेष्यः ||” - Among the dear ones and the others when worshipping according to scriptures, the additions or defects, if any, will be treated with equal eye, thus in Garuda Purana. मुहत् is one who performs actions without any expectation in return. मित्रम् is one who even while pointing the places of pain extends protection. One, who harms, is the enemy. उदासीन is one who desists either from helping or harming. मध्यस्थ is one neutral who does not act when any thing is required to be done. One, who does the unpleasant things, is the hateful.

“अह चेतत् | द्वेष्योऽवासिकृत् कार्यमात्रकारी तु मध्यगः | प्रियकृत् प्रियो निरूप्यापि क्लेशं यः परिरक्षति | स मित्रमुपकार तु ह्यनपेक्षयोपकारकृत् | यस्ततः स मुहत् प्रोक्तः शत्रुश्चापि वधादिकृत् || इति ||” - One who is affectionate without any expectation is the magnanimous one. Seeing suffering the one who extends help is the friend. One who causes pain is evil. One who does not reciprocate friendship even when given friendship is ungrateful. One who does good to others only if good was done for them is known as mediocre. The magnanimous one referred to here is the Supreme Lord.

9 “Whoso maintains an even attitude towards benefactors, friends (or) foes; (towards) those that are indifferent (or) neutral, the hated ones (or) help-mates, towards the good no less than towards the sinful: such an one towers above the rest. (94) How could there arise in the mind of such a person any strange idea of distinction such as friend or foe, one's own or a stranger? One who is in possession of the true vision—"I am myself the entire universe—" whence there could remain any distinction such as "This is base or this is best". How could one find different degrees of fineness in gold, were he to test it with the *Parīs* itself? Whatever comes to be rubbed against that touch-stone (*Parīs*) will all be pure gold. In that way in the light of his clear vision it becomes apparent that, the entire universe of being whether moving or moveless, is realised to be rooted in his self. Even though the ornaments in the form of the universe might be felt as of different forms and settings, still to such a one, they all appear to be made out of the same gold in the form of the Supreme Brahman. One who secures completely the Supreme Knowledge, can hardly be deceived by the outwardly perceptible forms and shapes. When one deeply considers the matter, one finds that a piece of cloth is nothing but a wide expanse of threads woven into each other in the same way he definitely sees nothing but the Supreme Brahman, pervading the universe. He alone is one having equipoised vision, who gets such total experience. Even-balanced intellect is not anything different from this. He who becomes the very essence of sacred waters, whose visible form spells reverence, and whose contact bestows the highest realisation of the Self, even on the benighted soul lost in ignorance, whose very word is the fountain of the religious spirit, and in whose vision get born the eight marvellous powers (अष्टसिद्धि) and to whom heavenly bliss and others are mere toys—the very remembrance in mind of such a perfect one transforms the being of the devotee into the figure and spirit of the Perfect; not only this, singing his praise is good for the singer and secures for him the Spirit.

[In the eighth verse, there is description of equanimity in

objects, while here there is description of equanimity, in persons. The objects, cannot perform any action, while persons perform actions for themselves as also, for others. So, it is difficult for them to have equanimity in them. Therefore, the person who has a benevolent and impartial, attitude to all and regards them alike, even after noticing differences, in their conduct stands out supreme.]

'Suhṛumitrāryudāsīnamadhyasthadveṣyabandhuṣu'—One, who is engrossed in the welfare of others, like a mother, without any selfish motive, is called 'Suhṛd' (disinterested friend), while one who returns good for good, is a friend.

The foe, is he who does evil to others without any cause, but the hateful is one, who does evil to others, having some selfish motive or any other cause.

The neutral, is he who remains indifferent, to two groups or men, if they are fighting and the mediator, is one who desires compromise, for the welfare of both.

He has a benevolent and impartial attitude, towards his relatives, as well as those hostile, to him.

'Sādhuṣvapi ca pāpeṣu samabuddhirviśiṣyate'—His dealing, with saints and sinners, is different but he thinks about the welfare of both of them, and also does good to them equally, because according to him all persons, are different manifestations of the same Divinity. As the Lord, is a disinterested friend, of all beings (Gītā 5/29), the Yogī is also a disinterested friend, of all beings, (Śrīmadbhāgavata 3/25/21).

Here, Lord Kṛṣṇa, by using the phrase 'Sādhuṣvapi ca pāpeṣu', means that if he regards saints and sinners alike, he will regard all people alike, because men are judged by their actions. The Lord, also lays emphasis on conduct (actions), by declaring, 'Whatever a great man does, the same is done by others' (Gītā 3/21). If he regards men who perform virtuous actions,

and also those who perform evil actions alike, it means, that he stands supreme, because it is difficult to have a benign and equanimous attitude for the sinners.

In the world, people generally have a tendency to observe actions of others. By doing so, they cannot observe their real self, that remains the same, while actions always undergo changes. Secondly, they specially observe, evil actions of others which mislead observers to degradation, because, by doing so, they attach much importance, to those evil actions. Therefore, Lord Kṛṣṇa in this verse, has explained that a Yogī regards saints and sinners alike, because he believes that God alone, creates the phenomenon and so, all that is God. Thus, the Yogī stands supreme.

An Exceptional Fact

According to the gospel of Gītā, 'Equanimity is called Yoga' (2/48). One who attains equanimity does not need any other virtue, for God-realization. He becomes wholly virtuous spontaneously, and he conquers the mortal plane (5/19). In Viṣṇu Purāṇa, Prahlāda has said, that equanimity is God's adoration (1/17/90). We can attain, such a significant equanimity, by being free from evil. The means to be free from evils, are (i) Do not regard anyone as evil. (ii) Do not do any harm to anyone. (iii) Do not think ill of anyone. (iv) Do not perceive evils in others. (v) Do not hear evil of others. (vi) Do not speak ill, of others. By following these six rules, we shall be free from evil. As soon as, we are free from evil, we shall become virtuous, because virtue is our real nature.

We make efforts, and follow the spiritual discipline, in order to, become virtuous. But, we do not become virtuous, because we do not renounce evil, altogether and even a fragment of an evil, arouses pride of having virtue, which leads us to several other evils. But when evil are rooted out, we become virtuous,

spontaneously. When we become virtuous, we automatically, do good to others. By doing so, all the world provides us the necessities of life, without our asking and without working hard. Thus, we cease our dependence, on the world. This freedom from dependence, on the world, enables us to attain equanimity, which is axiomatic and then we have nothing to do, we become liberated souls.

**Appendix**—The sphere of evenness (equanimity) is different from that of unequality. God is equanimous (equal) and the world is uneven. An enlightened Karmayogi remains equanimous, even having different dealings with different persons. He regards a clod, a stone, a piece of gold, a well-wisher, a friend, an enemy, a neutral, a mediator, the hateful, a saint and a sinner alike, though dealings with them can neither be the same, nor should be the same and cannot be done the same. The reason is that he has realized, 'there is nothing else besides God'.

If there is an idol of Lord Viṣṇu made of gold and there is toy-dog made of gold, both having the same weight will also cost the same. Lord Viṣṇu is the best and most venerable Deity while the dog is a mean and untouchable animal, in outward dealings there is a vast difference between the two but as far as the metal, gold is concerned, there is no difference between the two. Similarly in the world there is outward diversity among people as a friend, a foe, an exalted soul, a wicked person; good, bad, gentle, vile, virtuous, sinful, righteous, immoral, learned and foolish etc., but in essence all of them are only the manifestation of God. Only God has revealed Himself in different forms. He who knows this fact recognizes Him, others don't recognize Him.

While bathing, when soap is applied to the body, if the body is seen in a mirror, it looks bad and clumsy. At certain parts, marks like blisters appear, somewhere lines appear. But the person does not feel sad that he is suffering from a disease.

The reason is that he knows that these marks will be rubbed off when the body is washed in water. Similarly all beings are the manifestations of God but outwardly they appear different because of difference in bodies and their nature. In fact in spite of their different appearance, they are the manifestations of God but it is because of our attachment and aversion that they appear different.

The fact which was mentioned in the second verse of the fifth chapter by the expression 'Karmayoga Viśiṣyate' (Karmayoga is superior to Sāṅkhyayoga), the same fact has been mentioned here by the expression 'samabuddhirviśiṣyate'. An equanimous person remains untainted. Untaintedness leads to yoga while taintedness leads to 'bhoga'. There is equanimity in the three yogas but it is specially important in Karmayoga, because Karmayoga being the worldly spiritual discipline, a Karmayogi faces more oddities in life than other yogis.

*Link:—Equanimity (evenness of mind), which is attained by the Discipline of Action, is also attained by the Discipline of Meditation. So Lord Kṛṣṇa, while starting the subject of meditation, gives inspiration for meditation.*
