On verses 6.11–12

Lord Krishna begins with the words śucau deśe means pure or sanctified place. Purity is to be found in nature due to its being unoccupied and unfrequented by unclean and contaminated persons.

The word sthitam means firm infers the āsana or seat should not be overly soft neither should it be so high that one may fall from it nor too low as in a hole.

One should by all means have a mat of Kuśa grass which is sacred in Vishnu tattva and then should be covered by a deerskin which deters poisonous pests like snakes and scorpions from approaching one while in concentrated meditation.

On top should be placed a wool or cotton cloth.

Such a seat should be aesthetic to look at and inviting.

Sitting upon such a seat one should withdraw the senses and freeing the mind from all external distractions to focus the mind exclusively upon the ātma or soul within until upon its realisation one is freed from samsāra or the endless cycle of birth and death.

11 “On a pure spot establishing for himself a stable seat, neither too high nor too low, upon which is spread (either) a (soft—) cloth, (or) a deer-skin, (or) Kusa grass; (163) I shall now tell it in detail, and it will bear fruit through actual experience only. Therefore, for this study should first be selected a suitable and secluded resort which for sheer loveliness rivets any one visiting and stimulates in him unworldly, renunciatory spirit. The resort should also be hallowed by the habitation of a righteous person thereabout, so that the feeling of contentment grows in volume and strengthens the Soul's spiritual resolve. In that spot, naturally the spiritual hunger for the Yoga sinks into his Soul, actual experience holds the mind in embrace, while the lovely environments make the heart enjoy the bliss of the self (further). In such a place, it should not be a wonder that even an impious unbeliever passing by it is provoked into a penitent mood and becomes eager to do penance. Even a casual way-farer, with some business in hand accidentally approaching the spot, will forget to return to his home and family concerns. That spot will rivet one intent on not staying there, steady wavering minds, and pat and caress an impious person to awaken into a state of renunciation, so that, even a pleasure-seeker would feel like renouncing the very kingdom of worldly happiness and chooses to stay there quietly, once he sees the spot. It should thus be so lovely, and yet all so pure and holy, that the vision is opened to see directly to the very inner-most being of the Supreme Brahman. Such a holy place should specially be apart, secluded, the resort of only the seekers of Yoga-study, and none else should tread on its holy precincts. Rich growth of trees laden with fruit should be found to cover the spot, with roots and fruit as sweet as nectar. There do flow, at every step, springs of water, watering it, even in seasons other than the monsoon. Mild rays of the sun should warm it and cool and gentle breezes of wind keep it (the spot) cool. The quiet of the place covered with thick tree growth, should not either be disturbed by beasts or birds, though it might usually be haunted by parrots and bees. Swans or a couple of birds like water-ducks and even cuckoo might on occasions be visiting guests. Though not always, it would not matter much, if peacocks frequent the place now and then. One thing, however, Oh Son of Pandu, is necessary. The place must be made sacred by a monastery or temple of God Shiva. Either of these as one may like, might be chosen and be used for retiring in solitude. The (best) way of selecting a suitable spot is, that one should first try and see if on a particular spot the mind remains tranquil and steady, and if it does so, then he should select it finally and then prepare a seat there in the following manner; there should be spread out on the top a clean deer-skin; below the skin there should be in the middle a clean washed and folded piece of cloth and below that viz. at the bottom should be spread a matting of straight and uncut *kusha* grass. The grass weeds should be soft, of uniform length and thickness, and should be so arranged that they could remain together closely-knit. The seat, if too high, would make the body lose its balance and swing (on one side) and if, too low, would make the body feel the touch of the ground. It should, therefore, be a conveniently raised seat. It is unnecessary to discuss this further, the purport being that the seat should be firm and comfortable.

'Śucau deśe'—The place, is pure in two ways—(i) A naturally pure place such as the bank of the Ganges, a forest and the place near a holy basil, myrobalan (Āmvalā), Pipala tree etc. (ii) Place cleaned with cow-dung and by sprinkling water, or by removing two inches of soil from the surface. A clean place of natural beauty, invigorates and elevates the mind.

'Cailājinakuśottaram'—According to the text a Kuśa-grassmat, a deer-skin, and a cloth, should be spread one over the other* yet there should be spread a Kuśa mat below, a deer-skin in the middle and a cloth at the top. The deer-skin should be of a deer, which is not killed, but which is dead, in the natural way, as the skin of deer, which is killed is regarded, as impure. If a deer-skin, is not available, a rug can be spread. Over the rug, soft cotton cloth should be spread. Kuśa-grass, is supposed to be made from the hair of, boar-incarnation of the Lord and thus is considered holy. Deer-skin is spread over a Kuśa-grass mat, so that Kuśa-grass may not prick the skin and an electric current of a body, may not pass through the Kuśa-grass, to the earth, as a deer-skin is a bad conductor, of electric current. A soft cotton cloth is spread over the deer-skin, so that the bristles of deer-skin, may not stick into the body and the striver feels comfortable.

'Nātyucchritam nātnicam'—The seat of the plank-bed, should neither be too high, nor too low, because if it is too high, a striver while meditating may doze off, fall down and be injured; but if it is too low, creeping insects, may disturb him in his meditation.

* The order of the text does not seem reasonable and proper because Kuśa-grass pricks the body. Therefore, it should be interpreted as a Kuśa-grassmat below, a deer-skin in the middle and a cloth at the top, because the order of the meaning is more forceful than the order of the text.

'Pratiṣṭhāpya sthiramāsanamātmanaḥ'—The platform or the plank-bed, should be fixed firmly. Moreover it should belong to him and be used by him only, because there may be bacilli in it, of others, if it is used by them. Similarly, a striver should have his own rosary, a bag for the rosary, and a spoon, used in religious ceremonies etc. Not only this, but according to the ordinance of scriptures, a striver should not use the seat, shoes and shirts etc., of others, otherwise he has to be a sharer in their virtues and sins. One should not sit, on the seat of saints and ascetics because, it is a dishonour to them. If one touches their seats and clothes etc., with feet, then it is also, a sin.

(6.164) कि जहाँ समाधान की इच्छा से बैठते ही उठने की इच्छा न हो, जिसे देखते ही वैराग्य की दुगुनी बाढ़ हो; (6.165) जिसे सन्तों ने बसाया हो, जो सन्तोष का सहकारी हो और मन को धैर्य का प्रोत्साहन देता हो;

(6.166) जहाँ रमणीयता निरन्तर ऐसी बढ़ी हुई हो कि अभ्यास ही स्वयंसाधक के वश हो जाय तथा अनुभव आप ही आप हृदय में आ बसे;

(6.167) जिसके समीप से निकलते ही हे पार्थ! नास्तिकों को भी श्रद्धा उत्पन्न होकर तपश्चर्या की इच्छा हो;

(6.169) इस प्रकार, ऐसा स्थान ढूँढ़ना चाहिए कि जो न रहनेहारे को रख ले, न भ्रमण करनेहारे को बैठा दे तथा वैराग्य को थपट कर जागृत करे;

(6.170) जिस देखते ही शृंगारियों को ऐसा मालूम हो कि बड़ा राज भी त्याग दें और वही शान्तता से बैठे रहे;

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
