Previously Arjuna had been labouring under the false illusion of loving his perishable physical body as if it was the imperishable ātma or eternal soul.

Lord Krishna has compassionately dispelled such misconceptions by completely revealing in chapter two the eternal nature of the ātma.

The word adhyātma or wisdom of the eternal soul is that which is embodied within Śrīmad Bhagavad Gītā beginning in chapter two, verse 12 and ending in chapter six, verse 46

Having learned these essential and esteemed subject matters such as the eternality of the ātma, the singular oneness of the Supreme Lord and the dependence of all things moving and non-moving for their very existence on Him from the Supreme Lord Krishna Himself,

Arjuna has come to the conclusion that everything Lord Krishna has revealed is the complete absolute truth. But desiring to perceive this with His faculties of perception he queries the Supreme Lord further as will be revealed further in this chapter.

On verses 11.1–11.4

- प्रभुः means one who is powerful and capable. “There is no one who is more powerful than the perennial Supreme Person”, thus in Moksha Dharma. Therefore प्रभुः is the Lord, the powerful, thus has been clarified.

ARJUNA SPAKE:

1 "To confer favour upon me, the supremely secret word designated as the Adhyātma (concerning the Ātman) which Thou hast uttered: thereby is my delusion all dissipated. (44)

Then Arjuna said to the Lord, "O my Lord the treasure house of Mercy, thou for my sake, hast given utterance to the deepest truths that are beyond words. That is the last abode of rest whereto all Gods retire when the five gross elements dissolve in Brahman and even the last traces of the play of soul and Prakriti are wiped out. That truth treasured in thy heart like the miser's hoard, and held back as the deepest secret even from the Vedās is the truth for which God Shiva, spurning at all divine grandeur, became the hermit. That great mystery of thy divine Being, thou hast laid bare at one stretch before me. Yet being united to thy divine Being, how can I bethink myself and speak thus? Thou hast indeed rescued me as I was plunged head foremost in the great ocean of ignorance and error. Except thy divine Being in this universe there is nought else that can be so much as named? Yet how relentless is cruel fate that makes us the victims of this illusion of bodily self. There swelled in me the self-conceit that in this world, I am somebody famed as Arjuna, and I held the Kauravās as my own kinsmen. On the top of that, I was the victim of the most grievous dream, that by slaying them, I was plunging myself into sin. Just then, thou hast indeed waked me up. Leaving, Oh God my real abode, I entered the imaginary city in clouds ( गंधर्व-नगरी ), and was swallowing a drought of mirage. Albeit made of rags, the serpent made me wrench as of a real serpent bite, and it is to thine eternal glory that thou saved my soul that was all but ruined for nothing. Like a lion who being duped by his own image in water jumps into the well I was drawn on the verge of self-destruction; Thou, Oh Anant, hast saved me. Otherwise I would have rather preferred the waters of the seven oceans to meet and deluge the world, or the heavens fall in a crack of doom than have any warfare with my kith and kin; so unflinchingly I had set my face against such war- fare. Self-conceit had plunged me headlong into the abysmal depth of obstinacy: and Thou standing close by hast rescued me; who else could have saved me from destruction? A mere nothing as it is, my own self I counted as real and dubbed the wrong men my kinsmen. Indeed sheer madness had possessed me and you saved me. Once didst thou take us safe from lac-made burning house, which was a danger only to the body. But here was a disaster of the soul-destroying fire of delusion. As Hiranyaksha हिरण्याक्ष—brother of Hiranyakashyapu हिरण्यकश्यप seized upon the earth and putting it under his arms hid himself in ocean, so did perverse error snatch my wits away and smother them in the subterranean abyss of ignorance. By thy Supreme power, Oh my master, my wits have been restored to my soul. You have thus had to pass through another incarnation of Varāha (Boar). Boundless has been Thy mercy to me and its handiwork is beyond the power of my words. Thou hast indeed offered Thy very life-breath for my sake! And never a whit of thy work is lost; for, to thy eternal glory it has borne rich fruit by uprooting the illusion from my soul. In the lake of eternal bliss are blooming these lotuses of thine eyes. Let them but beam with glances of grace to dwell on that blessed soul and what a futile mockery would it be to talk of the soul as wrapped up in ignorance! How indeed can a shower of mirage touch the submarine fire? As for me, Oh Thou merciful God, I have entered the innermost sanctuary of thy heavenly grace, to experience complete union with Thy Divine self; what wonder then that my ignorance is dispelled, and I am finally delivered from that ignorance by the mere touch of Thy feet!

'Madanugrahāya'—The Lord, out of grace declared, "Out

* After thinking of the unusual grace of the Lord on him Arjuna was overwhelmed with joy. So without keeping in mind the rule he spoke this verse of thirty-three letters instead of thirty-two because when a man is beside himself, he is likely to forget the rule.

of compassion, for those who worship Me, I destroy their ignorance—born of darkness' (Gītā 10/11). Arjuna, was very influenced by His statement. So he offered praises to Him (10/12—15) and told Him, that it was only out of compassion, that He revealed to him His closely guarded secret.*

'Paramam guhyam'—The Lord, after describing His important divine glories, at the end of the tenth chapter, told him of his own accord, that He stood supporting the whole universe, with a single fragment of his Self (10/42). Arjuna regards this fact, as the supreme secret.

'Adhyātmasañjñitam'—In the seventh verse of the tenth chapter, the Lord declares, that he who knows, in reality His divine glories and Yoga-power (viz., He is the origin of all divine glories and again those divine glories, merge in Him), he is endowed with unfaltering Yoga of devotion. This has been called by Arjuna 'Adhyātmasañjñitam' (spiritual wisdom)†.

'Yattvayoktaṁ vacastena moho'yaṁ vigato mama'—Arjuna's delusion, was that he did not know that the Lord holds the entire universe, in a fragment of His body. But, when the Lord explained the fact to him, he came to know His uniqueness that though countless universes emanate from a fragment of His body, they remain established in it, and again merge in it, yet He remains, the same. Arjuna said that his delusion‡ was dispelled, but the Lord knew that his delusion was not totally dispelled. So again,

* Whatever Lord Kṛṣṇa explained to Arjuna in the Gītā from the beginning to this stage was out of compassion only because all His actions are full of His grace but a man does not realize this fact. When a man realizes His grace, he attains Divinity very easily and quickly. When Arjuna realizes His grace, he being overwhelmed with joy tells Him that it is by His grace that his delusion is destroyed.

† Whatever has been said by the Lord about devotion so far, is the supreme-secret-spiritual gospel.

‡ A man does not know delusion so long as he has it. But he knows it only when it is dispelled.

in the forty-ninth verse, the Lord says to Arjuna, "Be neither perturbed nor deluded."

**Appendix**—Arjuna says to Lord Kṛṣṇa, "Your utterance, which You have made, is out of compassion for me rather than to show Your learning. In it there is no other motive except Your grace alone."

'I am the beginning, the middle and the end of all beings' (10/20), 'I am also the seed of all beings' (10/39), 'Everything which is glorious, brilliant and powerful know that to be a manifestation of a spark of My splendour' (10/42), 'I stand supporting the entire universe with a single fragment of Myself' (10/42)—having heard these words Arjuna felt that his delusion was destroyed. But in fact his delusion was partly destroyed, it was not destroyed totally.

*Link:—How Arjuna's delusion was dispelled, is explained by him, in the next verse.*

(11.51) मैं जगत् में एक अर्जुन हूँ, ऐसा मैं शरीर का अभिमान रखता था, और इन कौरवों का मैं अपने गोत्रज समझता था;
