Having heard the direct orders given by Lord Krishna who is addressed as Keshava the controller of Brahma and Shiva and an ocean of love for His devotees;

Arjuna trembling in divine fear, with head bowed and palms joined, prostrated Himself before the Supreme Lord and with faltering voice choked up by emotion spoke the following verse.

On verses 11.35–11.36

“यदेतद् वक्ष्यमाणं, तत् स्थाने युक्तमेव, इत्यर्थः | अग्नीपोभाद्यन्तर्यामितया जगद्धर्पणाद् हृषिकेशः | केशत्वं त्वंशूनां तन्नियन्तुत्वादेः | प्रमाणं तु शशिसूर्यनेत्रम् इत्यत्रोक्तम् | हृषिकां, इन्द्रियाणामिशत्वाच्च हृषीकेशः | तेषां विशेषेण ईशत्वं च यः प्राणे तिष्ठन् इत्यादौ सिद्धम् || न मे हृषीकाणि पतन्त्यसत्यर्थे इत्यादिप्रयोगाच्च | इतरोऽर्थो मोक्षधर्मं सिद्धः - सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ शश्वत् केशैर्म अशुसञ्जितैः | बोधयन् स्थापयश्चैव जगदुत्पद्यते पृथक् | बोधनात् स्थापनाच्चैव जगतो हर्षसम्भवात् | अग्निपोमकृतैरेभिः कर्मभिः पाण्डुनन्दन | हृषीकेशोऽहमीशानो वरदो लोकभावनः || इति |” - What has been said thus as तत् स्थाने is what is proper, the place where Fire, Moon and the Sun abide in Him, whose rays enthrall the world over, He who is known as Hrishikesha. The fragment of the rays give direction to the Light. 'The Moon and the Sun are like the eyes' having said his presiding power of divinity over the senses is accepted, especially the divinity is well spoken as 'in the Breath is He abiding' and also further with the usage of phrases like, 'my senses will not succumb to sinful ways'. In other cases the statements like 'Even through My hair, I send forth the Moon the Sun and Fire, like the rays to worlds to energize, to protect, who arise according to the time, assigned to them. By such instructions and protection the world becomes pleased. Thus O Pandava, by these actions of the Moon, the Sun and the Fire, I come to be known as Hrishikesha, Mahesha the creator of the universe and the giver of the boons', thus in Moksha Dharma.

35 *Samjaya spake:—* “Having heard this word of Keshav (Krishna), the Diademed-Prince (Arjuna) with folded hands and in trepidation, having once again proffered obeisance, in extreme fear and with voice choked and trembling, said unto Krishna.” (482)

Jnanādev says, “(Oh hearers) Sanjaya narrated this whole story to Dhritarashtra, the king of the Kaurawas, who was full of dispondence and sorrow at heart. And the words of the unfathomed Omnipresent Anant—the Primeval Supreme Lord of the universe, were solemn and deep sounding. These words of profound import flowed with a sound that resembled the torrential waters of the Ganges rushing down from the regions of Satya-loka, or the loud thunders of big clouds storming suddenly from all quarters, on the deep sounding boom of the Milk-ocean churned by the Mount Meru. Arjuna caught at the words that were thus uttered: and his whole body shook, be it from fear or ecstatic joy. Bending low in devout earnestness, he lay prostrate again and again with folded hands. Struggling to speak out, he felt the words sticking in the throat for fear or joy one may guess. The words in the verse show how deeply Arjuna felt at the words of the Lord. And then folding his hands as before and touching the feet of the Lord in reverential dread, Arjuna spoke thus:—

English

'Etacchrutvā vacanam keśavasya kṛtānjalirvepamānaḥ kirīṭi'—Arjuna, was terror-struck, after beholding the Lord's terrible cosmic form. He was more terrified when the Lord declared, that He was the mighty Time, Who would destroy all the warriors. So, he began to tremble and bowed to Him, with joined palms.

Arjuna helped Indra, the king of the gods, by killing demons Kāla and Khañja etc. As a token of his pleasure, Indra placed a divine diadem (Kirīṭa), possessing the brilliance of sun, on his head. So Arjuna is called 'Kirīṭi' viz., the crowned one. Here, the same Arjuna, who helped Indra by killing huge demons, was trembling with fear.

'Namaskṛtvā bhūya evāha kṛṣṇaṃsagadgadam bhitabhītaḥ praṇamya'—Time, is Lord's destroying power, which always keeps on devouring all beings without exception. When Arjuna, beheld the terrible form of the Lord, he thought that Lord Kṛṣṇa is the master of that Time (Death), which devours the entire universe. So, except Him, there was no saviour, to protect him, from the clutches of Time (Death). So Arjuna, bowed deep to Him, again and again.

'Bhūya'—By this term, Sañjaya means to say, that from the fifteenth verse to the thirty-first verse, Arjuna offered praises to the Lord and bowed to Him, and now again he begins to offer his praises to Him and bows to Him.

Voice, gets faltered and choked, out of fear, as well as joy. If Arjuna had been too much terrified, he could not have uttered any words. It shows, that Arjuna was not, too much terrified.

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
