Singly, He has enveloped the space in between earth and the heaven. The words, behold, O Partha, My forms clarify Arjuna's intention to see his innumerable forms. The mother and father are the earth and the heaven - “Let mother earth not encourage me towards bad deeds”, “Let the heaven, my father be propitious to me”, due to such usages. His form is not normally of fearsome form. For Narada and others that form is not fearful. For some, the Lord shows His frightful form. “While some find fulfillment seeing His form, others become frightened. But seeing it repeatedly all find fulfillment”, thus in Varuna section. All cannot see that form of the Lord. Others in the course of meditation seeing His terrible form are frightened. “Seeing the universal form of the Lord and being pleased thereby, the frightened aspirants who, even though they have not seen Him, meditate on Him with their mind, eyes and other senses concentrated and feel as if they have perceived Him” - thus in Gautam section.

Like Arjuna, they were also exceedingly frightened but with continued receptivity the form would result in exuberance of Bliss. Therefore, it is not always frightful. At that time, the intention being the alleviation of the burden on the earth, the frightful aspect is shown. But in all places and all the times the vision of the Lord does not create fear among the devotees of Brahman. For those who are superior to Arjuna, no such fear arises. Sridevi, Brahma, Rudra and similarly Draupadi, Bhima, Balarama were not frightened. Thus has been said in Agni Puraana, because of the statement therein seeing the strange form of the Lord etc. Therefore the statement that the resplendence was never seen earlier.

English20 *'This mid-space between Heaven and Earth has, by Thee alone, been filled, as also all the quarters. Beholding this Thine wonderous, terrific Form, the world-triad is in trepidation, O Mighty Spirit.* (315)
Here indeed in wonderment do I behold thine Omnipresent Divine spirit filling the heaven, the nether regions, and the earth, with the mid-space between these, and all the ten quarters encircling hold to the edge of the horizon; but all this with the entire space is being submerged in thy terrific conflagration: or it seems as though all the rings of the fourteen worlds have been caught up in waves of the mighty ocean of thy miraculous Being. How then should my mind, in its lone helplessness, take in this vision of the astounding miracle? Thine all-filling presence defies all bounds: the fierce heat of this divine radiance is beyond all endurance of sight; all talk of happiness in this world in this plight is at an end; the world is struggling for its very life that is now in peril. And it is no less of a mystery how at the sight of thine eternal being, my mind is engulfed in terror!! Yet true it is that all the worlds are being drowned in the saddest plight. But why with the divine glory of thy being in sight, should there be a touch of evil like terror? Yet undoubtedly, that which fills my mind now at experiencing this great vision, is not joy or happiness of any kind. Worldly pleasures of life are a lure to the soul, only so long as he has not set his eyes on thy Pure Being. And now with the realization of thine Omnipresent vision a loathly feeling towards worldly pleasures torments my soul. And may I not after seeing thine Omnipresent vision yearn to hold thee in embrace; and if I am denied this embrace, how could I struggle to live in such a grievous distress? A retreat at this stage is threatened with the unrelenting affliction of earthly life and death; and were I to go ahead, thine unbounded Omnipresent vision would be beyond my reach. Alas, this poor mortal world that is thus being parched between two fires! To such extreme plight my passion for thy divine vision has brought my soul. Just as one scorched by fire turns for cooling himself to the sea, and is threatened by the terrific rushing waves, such verily is the pitiable plight of the universe that is now being tormented to extinction in thine all-filling vision.

English'Mahātman'—By this address, Arjuna means to say, that His self is the greatest of all. None can equal it.
'Dyāvāprthivyoridamantaraṁ hi vyāptaṁ tvayaikena diśaśca
sarvāḥ'—The entire space, between heaven and earth, is filled, with the Lord.
The Lord is all-pervading. He pervades all the ten quarters—east, west, north, south, east-north, north-west, west-south, south-east, upward and downward.
'Drṣṭvādbhutaṁ rūpamugraṁ tavedam lokatrayaṁ pravyathitam'—[Arjuna having described the frightening form of the Lord, in the nineteenth verse and in the first half of the twentieth verse, now starts describing the result of beholding this form.] Seeing, a dreadful, uncommon, marvellous and resplendent form, of the Lord, all the beings inhabiting the heaven, the earth and the netherworld, are greatly alarmed and are trembling with fear.
Though Arjuna has mentioned of the heaven and the earth, yet he has used the expression, 'the three worlds,' which may include the netherworld, also. The reason, is that Arjuna did not behold these systematically one after the other. He saw the heaven, the earth and the netherworld etc., altogether and so he is describing these in the same manner, in which he beheld.
Now a doubt arises, why were the three worlds greatly alarmed and trembling with fear? Did the beings of the three worlds, also behold, the cosmic form? And if they beheld, it then how?
The clarification is, that Arjuna beheld those three worlds within the cosmic body of the Lord. Those three worlds, were greatly alarmed and were trembling with fear, after noticing the terrible beasts, such as lions, tigers, snakes, as well as, death in His cosmic body.
A Vital Fact
In fact, the entire universe is a fragment of the cosmic form, of the Lord. The transience and modifications that appear in the universe, are nothing but, the sport of the Lord. The Lord, as
well as his cosmic form, has His independent existence, while the universe has no independent existence of its own. Arjuna saw the cosmic form of the Lord, with divine eyes, while devotees perceive this universe, as the manifestation of the Lord.
A passionate person, seeks pleasures in the universe, while a devotee who has nothing to do with mundane pleasures, beholds it as Lord's manifestations. As a child, regards the same woman as its mother, a father, as his daughter, a husband as his wife, and a lion as his prey, similarly the world, appears true with human eyes, transitory, with discriminating eyes, and divine with emotional eyes, and a fragment of the cosmic form seen with divine eyes.
**Appendix**—The term 'tvayaikena' used in this verse means 'only You have revealed Yourself in numberless forms—'Vāsudevaḥ sarvam'. No one can count Your numberless forms but in all of them only You prevail.'
In God there are several kinds of wonders. He is endless from different view-points such as space, time, thing, person, form, knowledge and Yoga etc. Whichever we have neither seen nor heard, nor known nor understood and which is beyond our imagination—all that is within the Lord's cosmic form.
*Link:—In the next two verses, Arjuna describes the scene of heaven, which he beheld in the Lord's, cosmic form.*

The words dyāvāpṛthivyor meaning heaven and Earth denotes all the upper and lower planetary systems throughout material existence and the word antaraṃ is all space between them all.
So in all spaces wherein universes revolve and in all spaces and every direction the Viśvarūpa or divine universal form of Lord Krishna could be seen pervading indefinitely.
The phenomenal pervasion of the Viśvarūpa of infinite nature made it irresistibly awe-inspiring and its omnipotence was terrible to behold.
All the three planetary systems such as those inhabited by Brahma, by the Devas or demigods, by the Siddhas or perfected beings, by the Pitris or ancestors, by the Gandharvas or celestial singers, by the Rākṣasas or demons, etc. all were assembled in the air above Kurukṣettra to witness the impending battle between the Pāṇḍavas and the Kaurāvas.
The words mahā- ātman meaning great soul denotes the Supreme Lord being the greatest soul comprised of all souls.
The three planetary systems are distinguished as being inhabited by compassionate beings like Brahma and devas, inimical beings like the demons, and neutral beings like the ancestors.
The word pravyathitaṃ means greatly fearful and panic struck.
The same divine vision that Arjuna was given was also bequeathed at that time in general to all beings and those who were evolved and competent were also able to directly perceive Lord Krishna's Viśvarūpa in all its magnificent and terrible splendour.
If one were to perhaps wonder why would this possibly be so, the answer is that it confirms the reality of the Viśvarūpa from a variety of sources and it irrevocably proves the indomitable power of Lord Krishna's transcendental potency which applies to all living entities.
