The example of a 1000 suns is a mere illustration to show the degree of infinite splendour and radiance that the form of Lord Krishna's Viśvarūpa or divine universal form displayed in ever increasing measure.

On verses 11.10–11.12

“सर्वाश्चर्यमयम् सर्वाव्येत्सकाम् ||” - of wonderful form, of wonderful Self. “सहस्र शब्दोऽनन्तवाची | तदपि पाकशासनविक्रम इत्यादिवत् प्रत्यायनार्थमेव | तथा हि ऋग्वेदखिलेषु - अनन्तशक्तिः परमोऽनन्तवीर्यः सोऽनन्ततेजाश्च ततस्ततोऽपि इति | महातात्पर्याच्च प्राबल्यम् | न च परिमाणोक्त्या किञ्चित् प्रयोजनम् ||” - सहस्र means innumerable. Like the thousands of heroic deeds, for elucidation of the eternal power and eternal energy, resplendent splendor even exceeding the Sun, in Rig Veda, therefore no use to compare it with anything else.

12 'Could there have been in Heaven the simultaneously up-spreading radiance of a thousand Suns, then might that radiance have resembled the radiance of that Mighty Being. (237)

And where indeed, Oh King, is the thing which the radiant beauty of the Omnipresent Divine Person looked like? Before that radiance pales even the world-destroying light of the twelve Suns together, appearing in myriad of clusters in a single moment. Fancy all the lightnings in the universe gathered together and mixed with the stuff of the world-consuming fire, and add to it the tenfold heavenly light; such radiance may perhaps partly come nearer to the radiance of the Divine Omnipresence. So transcendent is the divine glory of Shrihari; by the grace of that great sage Vyāsa, I beheld that all-surpassing brilliance emanating from the Lord's entire person,'—(added Sanjaya).

English

'Divi sūryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitā yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ'—As the light of thousand stars, twinkling together in the sky, cannot be compared with the light of the moon, and as the light of a thousand moons, cannot be compared with the light of the sun, similarly, the splendour of a thousand suns shining all at once, in the sky, cannot be like that of the cosmic form, of the Lord. It means that the splendour of the Lord was incomparable. The reason is, that the effulgence of the sun is material, while the splendour of the Lord was divine. So, the splendour belonging to two different categories, cannot be compared, only an indication can be given. Therefore, by referring to the brilliance of a thousand suns, Sañjaya is, hinting at the effulgence of the cosmic form.

**Appendix—**The light (splendour) of a thousand suns shining all at once in the sky, can't match the radiance of the Lord because the radiance present in the sun has also emanated from God (Gītā 15/12). There may be the light of thousands of suns, but that light is material while the Lord's light is not material but divine.

*Link:—After describing the Lord's cosmic form, and its splendour, Sañjaya, in the next verse, describes that Arjuna beheld the universe, in the cosmic form of the Lord.*

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
