“यदेतद् वक्ष्यमाणं, तत् स्थाने युक्तमेव, इत्यर्थः | अग्नीपोभाद्यन्तर्यामितया जगद्धर्पणाद् हृषिकेशः | केशत्वं त्वंशूनां तन्नियन्तुत्वादेः | प्रमाणं तु शशिसूर्यनेत्रम् इत्यत्रोक्तम् | हृषिकां, इन्द्रियाणामिशत्वाच्च हृषीकेशः | तेषां विशेषेण ईशत्वं च यः प्राणे तिष्ठन् इत्यादौ सिद्धम् || न मे हृषीकाणि पतन्त्यसत्यर्थे इत्यादिप्रयोगाच्च | इतरोऽर्थो मोक्षधर्मं सिद्धः - सूर्याचन्द्रमसौ शश्वत् केशैर्म अशुसञ्जितैः | बोधयन् स्थापयश्चैव जगदुत्पद्यते पृथक् | बोधनात् स्थापनाच्चैव जगतो हर्षसम्भवात् | अग्निपोमकृतैरेभिः कर्मभिः पाण्डुनन्दन | हृषीकेशोऽहमीशानो वरदो लोकभावनः || इति |” - What has been said thus as तत् स्थाने is what is proper, the place where Fire, Moon and the Sun abide in Him, whose rays enthrall the world over, He who is known as Hrishikesha. The fragment of the rays give direction to the Light. 'The Moon and the Sun are like the eyes' having said his presiding power of divinity over the senses is accepted, especially the divinity is well spoken as 'in the Breath is He abiding' and also further with the usage of phrases like, 'my senses will not succumb to sinful ways'. In other cases the statements like 'Even through My hair, I send forth the Moon the Sun and Fire, like the rays to worlds to energize, to protect, who arise according to the time, assigned to them. By such instructions and protection the world becomes pleased. Thus O Pandava, by these actions of the Moon, the Sun and the Fire, I come to be known as Hrishikesha, Mahesha the creator of the universe and the giver of the boons', thus in Moksha Dharma.

English36 *Arjuna spake—* “Quite in place it is, O Hṛṣikēśa (Krishna) that in glorifying Thee the world finds supreme joy and becomes passionately attached. The Evil Sprites, frightened, flee in (all) directions and all the gathering crowds of the Siddhas (Perfectioned Beings) proffer, obeisance.” (491)
Immutable we hold is the great truth clothed in thy words—“I am the great Destroyer Time and destruction of all things is my sport.” And yet, hardly does it stand to reason, that ‘Kāla’ the great Destroyer as thou art, Thou shouldst swallow up the Universe at the time when it must live and thrive. How should enlivening vigour of youth ebb away all of a sudden and yield place to untimely age and decay? And so what thou willest shall not in all probability befall this Universe. Oh Anant, can the sun ever set at noon before the measure of four Praharas of the day is up? Indeed, in Thee, who art the neverceasing 'Kala' (everlasting time) the three cycles, Past, Present and Future—unfold and work out in action at the appointed hour. When things are in generation, (उत्पत्ति) the powers swaying sustenance and decay are held in abeyance; and during sustenance—cycle, generation and decay cannot hold sway: during dissolution, powers of generation and sustenance are made to cease from action. And this order has existed in all eternity and is unshakeable. Therefore, the prospect of the Universe being swallowed by thee at the time of its full flush and bloom of life and enjoyment, jars on my soul'. At this, the Lord nodded his assent saying, 'Oh, a direct vision I have given thee of the two armies which are fatally fronting towards their doom; all else will go the appointed round of destiny.' No sooner had Lord Krishna finished than did Arjuna glance his eyes back to behold the order of the Universe, with all things unimpaired and untouched as before. Then he said, 'Oh God, Thou art, in truth, the mover who pulls the strings of all things on the stage of this universe; and so the universe has now been restored to its proper place as ordained. This however recalls to my mind the glory of thine acts by which thou savest earth-born mortals thrown into the ocean of misery of this life; and frequently recollecting these deeds of thine exalted glory, I rejoice in the ecstasy of blessedness and roll in full swing on the waves of that everlasting joy. Oh God, the universe being made blessed by the new lease of life, is seen to be bound to thy feet by the ties of love, and evil-doers are being chastised evermore. Thou art a terror to the wicked demons in the three worlds and so they are seen to flee before thee beyond all quarters. Here the Gods, heavenly beings, the human beings—nay the entire universe of created beings are exulting to find their life in thee and are doing obeisance to Thee.

English[It is observed, that a man being overwhelmed with terror, cannot speak. But Arjuna though terrified is offering praises to the Lord, from the thirty-sixth verse to the forty-sixth verse. How? The answer is, that after beholding the cosmic form of the Lord, Arjuna was terrified, as well as delighted, as he himself says, "I feel delighted, that I have seen what was never seen before; at the same time, my mind is confounded with fear" (11/45). It proves that Arjuna was not so much overwhelmed with terror, that he could not offer praises, to the Lord.]
'Hṛṣikeśa'—'Hṛṣika' means senses and 'Īśa' means master, so 'Hṛṣikeśa' means the Lord of the senses viz., God. It means, that the Lord is the conductor of senses and mind etc.
'Tava prakīrtyā jagatprahṛṣyatyanurajyate ca'—People of the world, by having a disinclination for the world, chant the names and glory of the Lord, narrate His activities and listen to these. By doing so, they are delighted. It means that people, by having an inclination for the world, develop attachment, aversion and burning sensation etc., while, by chanting the Lord's names and
glories, they attain peace and delight.
When the Lord incarnates, all the sentient and insentient beings, such as gods, human beings, sages, birds, beasts, trees, plants, rivers and streams etc., are delighted. Similarly, all of them are delighted, by chanting the Lord's names and glories. When they get delighted, by chanting His name and glories i.e., their minds get engrossed in Him, then they develop devotion for Him.
'Rakṣāṃsi bhitāni diśo dravanti'— All the demons, giants, ghosts and evil-spirits, etc., flee in different directions, out of fear when, Lord's names and glories, are chanted.* They flee, due to their own sins, not due to hearing of the Lord's names and glories.
It is because of their sins, that their ears cannot hear most pious, auspicious names and glories, of the Lord. But, if they stay there and listen to His names and glories, they become free, from their base life and attain salvation.
'Sarve namasyanti ea siddhasaṅghāḥ'—The perfected souls, saints and strivers, by chanting the Lord's names and glories and listening to His sports, bow to Him.
All these scenes and sports are being revealed by the Lord, in His divine cosmic form.
'Sthāne'—Arjuna, shows propriety of the above-mentioned actions of beings, because an inclination for the Lord, leads to peace and bliss, while disinclination for Him, leads to disquietude and distresses. It means, that a being (spirit) is a portion of the Lord, and so he is delighted by having an inclination for Him, and such qualities as peace, forgiveness and politeness, are revealed in him. But if he goes astray, he
* The places, where people don't chant and listen to the Lord's names, glories and sports which dispel fear of demons, are haunted by ogresses (Śrīmadbhā. 10/6/3).
has to face adversity, which is natural.
The man (soul), is a fragment of the Lord. But, having an inclination for matter, he has a desire for prosperity and pleasure. The more, he tries to gain these, the more entangled, he gets in disquietude, adversity and in burning sensation etc. But, when by having disinclination for the world, he starts moving towards the Lord, he starts attaining bliss, and his sorrows diminish.
**Appendix**—Here the term 'sthāne' should be understood for both the preceding verses and the succeeding verses to this verse. Whatever the Lord said in the thirty-second, thirty-third and thirty-fourth verses and whatever has been said in this verse for that Arjuna says, 'O Lord! You said that the warriors of the hostile army have already been slain and I should merely become an instrument—in this way whatever You said is quite proper. The world is delighted by chanting Your names and glories, and the demons, being terrified, are fleeing—whatever is happening is proper. All this human-drama is being staged by You, not by me.'
*Link:— Arjuna justifies the propriety of the term 'Sthāne', used in the preceding verse, in the next four verses, and offers repeated salutations to the Lord.*

Hindi(11.491) हे अर्जुन।

Sri Udiya Baba · Modern
Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
The word sthāne means appropriate or most worthy.
Who is most worthy? The Lord Krishna is the most worthy.
What is appropriate? It is appropriate that all the hosts of heavenly beings including the Devas or demigods, the Gandharvas, Siddhas, Yakṣas, Vidyādharas, Kinnaras, Kimpuruṣas should have come to witness the astounding spectacle
of Lord Krishna the Supreme Lord of all displaying Himself by the request of His devotee as charioteer in the battle of Kurukṣettra and to appropriately admire His greatness and praise His unmatched compassion to manifest Himself for them to see by His grace and to subsequently rejoice and revel at the phenomenal glory of it all.
How could they not anurajyate or feel devotion this way about the Supreme Lord who is their originator and omit to give Him who is worthy of every adulation, full glorification.
To the contrary it is also appropriate that the unrighteous Rākṣasas or demons should be dejected, disheartened and fearful, fleeing in all directions.
Arjuna further proceeds to explain how all this is right: —
