Viewing the phenomenal panorama of forms and terrifying visages in active mode of Lord Krishna's Viśvarūpa or divine universal form which was blazing flames in all directions was terrible and horrifying like the fires of annihilation during the cataclysm at the time of universal destruction.

Arjuna being extremely afflicted beseeched Lord Krishna with the word deveśa denoting “O' Lord of Brahma and Śiva” and the words jagannivāsa “O' refuge of the universe”

and then supplicated Lord Krishna with the word prasīda or be merciful and return his normal human vision so that he would be able to regain his equilibrium and composure again.

So the Supreme Lord Krishna exhibiting His Viśvarūpa demonstrated how it manifested from Him, functioned through Him and existed within Him.

He will now show to Arjuna how by His indomitable will He will bring about the destruction of Duryodhana and all the Kaurāvas along with all the demons in the guise of kings fighting with them.

Also He will also show the destruction of all those possessed of āsuric or demoniac nature that may be fighting for kings in the army of the Pāṇḍavas, so that Bhumi-devi or Mother Earth will be rid of such a burden.

At this time Arjuna began to see with the divine vision bequeathed by Lord Krishna how all the hosts of the Kaurāva army met with their destruction and by who although the actual event had not yet transpired.

Arjuna continues:—

On verses 11.22–11.27

“अनन्यचेष्टां कुर्वतामपि भगवच्चेष्टयैव प्रलयोदके प्रजानां प्रवेशवत् प्रवेशो युज्यते | सेनामध्यतो भगवन्मुखानामुभयाभिमुखत्वाच्चोभे सेने तत्र प्रविशतः | ये तु तस्मिन्नेव महुर्ते मरिष्यन्ति तेषां दशान्तरे चूर्णितमपि शिरः सूक्ष्मदृष्टिगोचरत्वान्मनुपदृष्ट्या तथा न दृश्यते | तथा भिन्नमपि घटादिकं यावत् पृथक् न पतति तावन्मन्ददृष्टिनां न ज्ञायते | यथा पुरुषो जगाऽशिवभ्यामेव दृष्टा ||” - Like other activities of the Lord eternal waters of dissolution at the time of creative cycle, people were entering His mouth. Established in the middle of the armies with mouths directed both ways, both the armies were entering His mouth. Those who were about to die at the commencement of the war, their heads were seen turning to powder between the teeth of the Lord. Since the sight being subtle can be seen only by few, all others cannot see it. Like a pot which is broken can be seen by ordinary people only when the pieces fall down, this sight is visible to ordinary eyes. It is similar to the case of Puru whose old age was seen only by Ashvins and not by others.

25 "And Thine mouths with the gruesome jaws, and resembling the Fires of Doom; the moment I behold them, I cease to know my bearings, and find no solace. Be gracious, O Master Deity, Thou that dwellest within the universe. (375)

I see unceasingly before mine eyes these formidable gaping mouths of thine, which look like vessels of terror that have burst upon my view. And the dense mass of teeth and jaws, too thick to be held between the two lips, are striking out on the lips to form, as it were, the thickest hedge around sharp deadly weapons. These awful mouths of thine overflowing with furious vehemence are indeed raining torrential death on us, as if they are like the Takshaka, the deadliest viper replenished with venom, or the very night of universal Death possessed by Ghosts; or the very fire of lightning that is flourishing fiery weapons. What things should indeed survive that universal holocaust in which the flames of the fire of world-conflagration are fanned by the tempestuous whirl-wind of world annihilation? So horridly destructive are these mouths of thine; at their sight all courage has left me; a grievous delusion has come upon me and I have lost my bearing knowing neither myself nor where and how I stand. No sooner did my eyes catch a glimpse of this all-pervading presence of thine, than is totally dried up the fount of happiness in me.

Now hold thy hand in this topsy-turvy welter of things. Knowing full well as I do, that thou wilt forbear, I am nevertheless asking for this immediate relief; and I pray: Thou save my life from this utter extinction by being swallowed up in thine divine being. As thou art our master, Oh Anant, I pray to thee to overlay my life as with a shield to rescue it from destruction and stop this career of total annihilation. Oh Thou, the supreme Lord of all Gods, by thy divine spirit does the world live; how then should thou, unmindful of all this, take to this wake of destruction? Therefore, Oh God, may thy grace forthwith dawn on me tearing off the veil of illusion (thy Māyā) and save me from this perilous plight. All this while piteous have been my repeated prayers to thee; because, terror-stricken I stand at the sight of this all-filling image of divinity. Though thrusting myself into the jaws of death itself, single-handed I repelled the attack on the city of Indra. But, Oh God, what I stand fronting is not on a level with those deeds of valour. Here outdoing Death himself, thou hast set about swallowing all of us along with the universe entire. The time was not indeed ripe for world-dissolution; yet all of a sudden, the world strangely enough is running down to its annihilation at thy hands—yourself being the Protector; alas, how cruel for the poor world that has had such a short life? Yearning for blissful peace, I longed to have a vision of the all-pervading image of Divinity; and what a disaster meets my eyes? Alas, the whole world is now going to rack and ruin, and is being swallowed by thee. Do I not see with my eyes that into thine innumerable gaping mouths all these armies are being swallowed swiftly?

'Daṁṣṭrākarālāni ca te mukhāni drṣṭvaiva kālānalasannibhāni'—Arjuna says, that seeing the Lord's frightful faces on account of their terrible teeth, and flaring like the raging fire at the time of universal dissolution, he was terror-stricken.

'Diśo na jāne na labhe ca śarma'—Beholding, such a terrible form of the Lord, Arjuna, could not know, even the four quarters of the world. The quarters, are discerned with the help of, sun-rise and sun-set. But the sun was shining, the Lord's eye, situated within His cosmic form. Moreover, the splendour of the Lord, was more than even the effulgence of a thousand suns, blazing

forth, all at once (11/12). So, he knew not the four cardinal directions. So being utterly amazed and confused, he lost happiness and peace.

'Prasīda deveśa jagannivāsa'—He is the Lord of the gods and Abode of the entire universe. So the gods and men etc., being terrified, invoke the Lord only. After beholding the frightening form of the Lord, being terror-struck, Arjuna thought, that the Lord was displeased and angry. So he prayed to Him, for His pleasure and kindness.

Appendix—The Lord, being pleased with Arjuna, is showing him His cosmic form (Gītā 11/47), but having seen the terrible and frightening form of the Lord, Arjuna has the false notion that the Lord is displeased with him. So he prays to Him to be pleased with him.

Link:—Arjuna in the next two verses describes that the chief warriors were rushing headlong into the Lord's fearful mouths.
