Continuing further with this theme Lord Krishna reiterates that still others who are incompetent to follow the paths of yoga which lead to ātma tattva or realisation of the soul

– they must hear from the Vaiṣṇavas the devotees of the Supreme Lord and follow the teachings of the sages and munis who are established in truth and righteousness.

Then they can begin to traverse the path of karma yoga or devotional activities and then onto jñāna yoga perfecting in Vedic knowledge, etc. and commence actual contemplation of the ātma or immortal soul.

Also those who cannot even do that but are able to have faith in what they learn from superiors, they get purged of their sins and absolved can gradually embark upon the path of karma yoga and thus eventually surpass samsāra the perpetual cycle of birth and death.

The word api denotes the levels of competency that different gradations of human beings possess.

Next in order to discriminately comprehend the exact position of the ātma residing within the Jīva or embodied being perpetually within material existence

it is emphasised that whatever comes into existence either movable or immovable is the product of the union of the sentient and the insentient known as chit and achit.

For the सांख्याः primarily through meditation. “The Performers of Actions, listening to His exploits, understanding them, meditating on them realize Him. He who listens should understand and meditate on Him. The man of wisdom can realise Him only after meditating on Him. Otherwise His experience will never be possible for any one”, thus in Gaupavana Shruti. By mentioning अन्ये the method for the others who are not so qualified, is suggested.

There is no substitute for devotees other than Sri Vishnu's Grace. They know some things on their own and some things listening from others. Knowing Sri Hari in this manner, and meditating on Him, some realize (Him) in their heart. Some seers like Narada and others see him outwardly also. Having known in the beginning with the Grace of the Lord and gradually consolidating that knowledge by their own efforts, they perceive Sri Vishnu outwardly without the need of meditation. The one who has the experience without the need of meditation, they perceive Him even without meditating on Him. These are the Sankhyas, having equanimity, among whom the four faced Brahma is the supreme. In some cases the best of the Kshatriyas who performing Horse Sacrifice, have become devoted and thus have seen the Lord, when He came to participate in the sacrificial offerings. Sometimes after listening to the scriptures and being enlightened thereby same have seen the Lord, best of the Persons

The others experience the Lord by listening from others all about Him, by reflection and meditating thereupon. There is no other way than these. Beginning from Seers and Kings the strength of illumination gradually increases till Brahma, whose illumination cannot be matched with any one other. For the sake of the pleasure of Sri Vishnu alone he was, others acquired knowledge through listening gradually from the human beings upward. Since the human beings are endowed with little illumination, they are only the listeners of the Vedas. All these will realize the Lord according to their capability and competence. While for others listening is generally recommended, human beings being less illumined, listening has been recommended specially. The illumination of the human beings being basically weak, they are not capable of having full realization. Therefore, since they have to take shelter of Shrutis (Vedas), they are called shruti-paraayanaah. Those who, without having to listen to the scriptures, have acquired the illumined knowledge, and their such knowledge is not contrary to the scriptures, such human beings even though they are born humans life must be understood to be the very gods.

-The male who measures from his neck downwards nine times the size of his face and similarly the female who measures her neck down eight measures of the size of the face and those males and females who measure with their ninety six fingers, with their palms to the extent of ten in number, and with their feet to the extent of seven in number, should be considered similar to great gods. The gradation from the supreme one gets reduced in decreasing order by the measure of five fingers. Similarly the measure of feet also goes on reducing till it reaches one feet. This is in reference to the gods who are not among the supreme Gods. From the measure which has been mentioned in respect of the gods, the measure gets reduced by four fingers. And similarly by the measure of seven feet spoken for the gods gets reduced by one measure in respect of Gandharvas etc. The above measures is in respect of Gandharvas elevated from humans, Kings, and best of the human beings. Less than eighty seven measures puts one in amongst the Asuras and the human beings who are destined for eternal samsara. The measure between ninety six and eighty seven keeps the Gandharvas of divine origin. Seers are less than ninety two measures from the lowest among the order of the gods. In accordance to the measure of the pleasure of Sri Vishnu, each one of the male or female assumes similarity to Him.

25 *'The rest, unable to attain such (realisation), learn from others by hearsay, and so proffer worship. They too, steadily pursuing what they had taken on trust, do, all the same, cross-over beyond (the ocean of) Death.* (1041)

In such diverse ways, the seekers get safely through the whirlpools in the ocean of mundane existence. But they do so by banishing all conceit and placing all reliance with complete faith, on the advice of some single person. They hear with great reverence and concentrate their minds on the advice coming out from the mouths of such persons who can discriminate between good and evil and are tender-hearted and enquire after and redress miseries and give happiness. They respect the advice with faith, believing it to be their summum bonum and wave their very lives around the very letters of such advice. Such ones (of firm faith), in the end, oh! you 'having a monkey as your banner on your chariot!' get safe and sound through this ocean of (births and) deaths. There are thus diverse ways of realising the Supreme Brahman. Enough of this. I shall now give you the butter in the form of conclusion (सिद्धांत) arrived at after churning (मंथन-research) all the Scriptures, and that will, Oh Son of Pandu, give you experience and enable you to secure without much effort, the attainment of the Supreme Brahman. And therefore, I I now treat that same subject, ripping all (perverse) dissensions and take out from the interior the pure truth (essence).

'Anye tvevamajānantaḥ śrutvānyebhya upāsate te'pi cātitarantyeva mṛtyuṇ śrutiparāyaṇāḥ'—Strivers, who have a keen desire but who cannot understand in full, anyone of the Disciplines of Meditation, Knowledge or Action, by listening to liberated souls, and by obeying them promptly, realize the self. As a poor man, receives money from rich people, by carrying out their wishes, a devotee, receives divine knowledge, by obeying great souls. But the difference is, that money is gained when a rich man offers it, and obedience to great souls naturally, leads a man to realize God. Who is automatically attained, as payment of the money, depends on a rich man and his will, but God-realization does not depend, on anyone.

A man regards the body's death as his own by identifying himself with his body. Those, who rely on the advice of saints and great souls, and act according to it, their assumed affinity, with the body is renounced. So, they go beyond death i.e., they become free from the assumption, by which they regarded the death of a body, as their own death.

Such strivers, who rely on the advice of great souls, are divided into three categories:—

(1) Those, who do not desire worldly enjoyment, but have only yearning for God-realization; and the great soul they depend on, is really exalted, they attain God-realization, quickly.

(2) Those who have a desire for God-realization, but their mundane desires have not perished, by obeying great souls, first they will be free from worldly desires, and then will attain God.

(3) Strivers who only aim at God-realization, even though, the saints whom they obey, are not exalted souls, will realize God, by His grace, because He being omniscient, knows all beings.

Actually, great souls transcend virtues and vices. If a striver finds fault with them, he will behold the reflection of his own vices, because they have no vices, at all. So a striver, need not watch their actions and behaviour. He should draw spiritual inspiration from them. He should neither speak ill of them, nor find fault with them, otherwise he cannot progress spiritually.

**Appendix**—The people who have no ability to understand the scriptures and whose discriminative power is weak but have a burning desire to go beyond death, such people also by obeying the liberated exalted souls, go beyond death.

In the Upaniṣad, there is an anecdote. Satyakāma, the son of Jabālā went to sage Gautama so that Gautama might preach him the gospel. The sage gave him four hundred lean and feeble cows and ordered him to tend them. Satyakāma enthusiastically said, 'I shall return only when their number increases to a thousand.' Having said this, he carried them to the forest and began to rear

them there. After several years when their number was increased to a thousand, then a bull said to him, "Our number has increased to a thousand, therefore you should take us back to the preceptor (teacher)." Having said this, the bull preached him the gospel of the first pāda of Brahma. The next day Satyakāma started for the seminary with the cows. On the way Agni preached him the gospel of Brahma's second pāda; Haṁsa preached him the gospel of Brahma's third pāda and Madgu (an aquatic bird) preached him the gospel of the fourth pāda of Brahma. Thus on the way having gained knowledge of the Supreme, he came back to sage Gautama. When the teacher asked him, he narrated the whole anecdote and requested the teacher to preach him the gospel in his own words. Then Sage Gautama preached him the gospel (Chāndogya, fourth chapter, fourth to ninth khaṇḍa) (portions). In this way only by obeying an enlightened liberated exalted soul, Satyakāma attained Self-realization.

Link:—In the preceding verse, the Lord declared that those strivers who worship after hearing from others too, go beyond death. Now a question arises, what causes death? The Lord answers the question.
