The word evaṁ means in this way refers to the manner previously described.

One must intelligently comprehend the nature of the Puruṣaḥ or manifestation of the Supreme Lord Krishna and prakṛti, the material substratum pervading physical existence

and understand the three components of prakṛti known as the guṇas which are the modes of goodness, passion and ignorance which are inclusive of everything in material existence.

They will be fully elaborated on in the next chapter.

The word sarvathā means in any way or condition and refers to whatever physical body one finds themselves forced to accept whether deva, human, demon, etc. due to the dictate of karma or reactions to actions.

Na sa bhūyo’bhijāyate means never takes birth again, never coerced to enter a womb again, never forced to take a material form again.

This means that at the time the physical body ceases to exist the ātma or immortal soul will be realized as the eternal essence of the Jīva or embodied being

and Mokṣa or liberation from material existence will be achieved promoting one to the everlasting spiritual worlds never again subject to birth and death.

“पुरुषः सुखदुःखानाम् इति जीव उक्तः | पुरुष प्रकृतिं च इति जीवेश्वरो सहैवोच्यते | अन्यत्र महातात्पर्य विरोधः | उत्कर्षं हि महातात्पर्यम् | तथाहि सौकरायणश्रुतिः - अवाच्योत्कर्षं महत्त्वात् सर्ववाचा सर्वन्यायानां च महत्परत्वम् | विष्णोरनन्तस्य परात् परस्य तच्चापि ह्यस्त्वेव न तत्र शङ्का | अतो विरुद्धं तु यदत्र मानं तदक्षजादावधवाऽपि युक्तिः | न तत् प्रमाणं कवयो वदन्ति न चापि युक्तिर्ध्वनमतिर्हि दृष्टेः - इति || अतो युक्तिभिरप्येतदपलापो न युक्तः | अतो यया युक्त्याऽविद्यमानत्वादि कल्पयति साऽप्याभासरूपेति सदेव माहात्म्यं वेदैरुच्यत इति सिद्धयति | अवान्तरं च तात्पर्यं तत्रास्ति | उक्तं च तत्रैव - अवान्तरं तत्परत्वं च सत्त्वे महद् वाऽप्येकत्वात् तयोरनन्ते इति ||” - Here the Purusha referred is the Jiva. In पुरुष प्रकृतिं, Purusha referred is the Lord. Thus Purusha is spoken both as the Lord as well as the Jiva. In other cases, such important inference is contradicted. The supreme inference has already been clarified thus in Saukayana scripture. - “The immortal, greater than the great, Sri Vishnu being supreme, in His greatness alone is all the scriptural statements are engaged; even otherwise it is the Truth”. No contradiction can be assumed here. Of this there is no doubt. No such thing here is rational nor do the Seers speak of any such evidences. Similarly, neither by rationalization nor by personal experiences such evidences are observed. Therefore, even rationalization cannot disprove what has been established by scriptures. If by rationalization anything is imagined, which is not wisdom, then same should be rejected as obscuring the Truth as revealed in Vedas.

“श्यामत्वाद्यभिधानच्च | युक्तं च पुरुषमतिकल्पितयुक्त्यादेराभासासत्वम् | अज्ञानसम्भवात् | न तु स्वतः प्रमाणस्य वेदस्याऽभासत्वम् | अदर्शनं च सम्भवत्वेव पुंसां बहुनामप्यज्ञानात् | तर्ह्यस्मदनधीतश्रुत्यादौ विपर्ययोऽपि स्याद् इति च न वाच्यम् | यतस्तत्रैवाऽह - नैतद्विरुद्धा वाचो नैतद्विरुद्धा युक्त्य इति ह प्रजपतिरुवाच इति | तद्विरुद्धं च जीवसाम्यम् - आभास एव च | इति चोक्तम् ||” - Like the reference to the dark colour, rationalisation and imagination contradictory to Vedic scriptures, therefore, should be understood as capable of causing ignorance, because of unawareness of the true meaning. There is no possibility of ever being misguided by the Vedic scriptures as they are perfect and eternal. Unawareness is possible because people are oblivious of purpose of human existence and of truth. Therefore it is said that considering that the illusion is only in the empirical world, then in the absence of any contrary evidence, nothing can be established whether a thing is illusory or non-illusory.

Which of the Person is the Supreme One here, only you are capable to speak Vaishampayana said: O One born in Kuru family, No one doubts that Person is one alone. There are many Person born in the wombs but that Person in this universe is the Supreme One who is endowed with great attributes”. It is not all like the web spread in dream state. Even Bhagavan Vyas has said: “वैधर्म्याच्च न स्वप्नादिवत् - Because of the difference of the nature, not like the dream”. The world is not a matter imagined by a person like the object in the dreams. On the contrary, we have already spoken earlier about its real nature. Thus in Ayasya section - “Since the world is ever unstable, and subject to modification, it is said to be like a dream; not that it is unreal like a dream. Because there is no separation here”. It is not an error (to meditate on I am Brahman). Because that does not speak of unity between Jiva and the Lord. In fact the Lord Himself is the Jiva’s objective goal. But that is not the principal method, even though unity does not contradict the statement of Jiva being the reflection. The same has been mentioned in Madhucbhanda Smriti - “The reason for the wise to recommend the aspirant to be united with the Lord, is because Jiva is reflection of the Lord”. Besides, in Agniveshya section meditation as aham ensures the fruits of attaining the form of Sri Vishnu. “The aspirant who meditates as अहं ब्रह्मन् attains soon similarity with Brahman. Of this there is no doubt”. “I am subservient to You is what is meant by the statement - अहं ब्रह्मन्, Thereafter, being subservient, I am like Yourself, thus do the servants consider, not in the sense being One like You”, thus in Vamana Puraana. Because of his being reflection, such is the feeling of the servant. Similarly thus in Ayasya section - “Since I am the reflection of Your form, I am Your servant. And You are verily like me, thus one should meditate on that Supreme Person”. pratibimba - reflection means being like Him.

23 "He who thus understands the Purusha and the Prakṛiti along with the Constituent-aspects: in whatsoever way he may behave in the present, he is not liable to another birth. (1030)

One, who thus clearly understands Purusha, also understands that the entire Guna-ridden universe is all born of this Prakṛiti. Just as we discriminate, Oh Dhananjaya, this is the original form and that is its shadow; this is a mirage, the (real) water spring lies far away, in that way one who has realized in his mind, the sharp difference between Prakṛiti and Purusha, (such a one) although performing all worldly actions, being restricted to a particular body, does not get defiled by them in the way the sky does not get defiled by the mist. He does not fall a victim to the infatuation (urges) of his body so long as it exists and after its fall does not assume any birth again. This sole (mental) act of clearly distinguishing the divergent roles played by Prakṛiti and Purusha confers extraordinary (super-mundane) advantages upon its agent. Now there are various means through which such a discrimination rises, like the Sun, in the heart and hear about them.

'Ya evaṁ vetti puruṣaṁ prakṛtiṁ ca guṇaiḥ saha sarvathā vartamāno'pi na sa bhūyo'bhijāyate'—Here the term 'Evam' (thus), denotes that the Spirit is different from, the body. He who knows this difference in reality, while performing his duty according to his caste, creed, stage of life and circumstances etc., is not reborn. He knows that prakṛti with its evolutes, modifications and instruments etc., which appears in the form of universe, is different from the Self. So he is not born again, because attachment to the modes of nature, is the cause of its birth (Gītā 13/21).

Here, the expression 'Sarvathā vartamāno'pi' (acts in anyway), does not involve forbidden actions, because he who knows prakṛti, with its modes as different from the self, can have no desire to gain the unreal. When he has no desire, forbidden actions

cannot be performed by him, because desire is the only cause of forbidden actions (Gītā 3/37).

The Lord, exhorts a striver, to know the self in reality and that there is no action, in the self. So he can be neither an agent, nor an experiencer. When he realizes, that he is not an agent (doer), his pride of doership comes to an end, and so he has no desire for fruit of action, which are naturally performed by him according to the ordinance of the scriptures. Having transcended the *guṇas*, (modes of nature), he is not born again.

**Appendix**—The expression ‘dehe’smin puruṣaḥ paraḥ’ used in the preceding verse is explained in this verse. He whose discrimination has been aroused viz., ‘dehe’smin puruṣaḥ paraḥ’ has been realized, he, in spite of performing his duty according to his order—stage of life (*varṇāśrama*), remains untainted. In fact a man (the Self) is untainted, but being attached to the modes, he gets tainted and follows the cycle of birth and death (13/21). The modes are related with Prakṛti, not with Puruṣa (13/19-20).

The term ‘api’ used in the expression ‘sarvathā vartamāno’pi’ means that he, in spite of acting in every way, like the person who is attached to the world, remains unaffected (Gītā 3/25).

‘Na sa bhūyo’bhijāyate’—As butter once churned out of the curd does not become curd by mixing it with whey again, similarly having renounced relationship with the modes born of Prakṛti, a man is not bound by modes again. He merges into Brahma viz., as Brahma is free from birth and death, so does he become free from the cycle of birth and death.

In the thirty-first verse of the sixth chapter the expression used is ‘sarvathā vartamāno’pi sa yogi mayi vartate’, while here the expression is ‘sarvathā vartamāno’pi na sa bhūyo’bhijāyate’. In the expression ‘sa yogi mayi vartate’, the words used in the sixth chapter, are in the context of attainment of love, while in the expression ‘na sa bhūyo’bhijāyate’ the words used here, are in the context of Self-realization. In both states of love and

Self-realization, there is no attachment to modes. The difference in the two is that in Self-realization, there is emancipation from birth and death but in love besides emancipation (salvation), the devotee attains oneness with God.

*Link:—In the preceding verse, the Lord explained that the true knowledge of prakṛti and Puruṣa, is the means of being free, from rebirth. Now, curiosity arises, whether there is any other means also to be free from rebirth i.e., to attain salvation. So, the Lord mentions four means, in the next two verses.*
