The ātma or immortal soul is compelled to accept unlimited varieties of physical bodies from all levels of creation - Sometimes as a deva, sometimes as a human, sometimes as an animal etc.

These forms are neutrally awarded according to the guṇas or three modes of goodness, passion and ignorance which adhere in strict accordance to the karma or reactions from past actions in proportion to the degree of attachment and cravings one is predisposed to pursue in order to procure pleasure and enjoy sense gratification.

Taking birth one launches into activities pursuing good and evil in order to satisfy and gratify ones desires and propensities.

Hence is order to exhaust the karma one is incessantly creating by innumerable actions one is born into wombs of good and evil perpetually in material existence. That is why it is stated that attachment to the guṇas is the cause of birth in good and evil wombs.

Born one performs actions and from the reactions one is forced to take birth again and again without cessation.

This circumvolution never ends until by the aggregation of sukriti or pious activities one seemingly by chance has the auspicious opportunity to attain the association of a Vaiṣṇava devotee of the Supreme Lord Krishna

and being blessed by them alters the course of their destiny and upgrades their karma as Lord Krishna Himself confirms in chapter seven verse 19 beginning bahunam janmanam ante meaning:

“after many births a knowledgeable living entity gets association of a mahātma or great soul”.

On verses 13.21–13.22

“यतश्च यद् इत्याह - उपदृष्टा इति | अनुमन्ता अन्वनु विशेषतो निरूपकः ||” - To the query यतश्च यद्, the reply is given in this verse as it is the उपदृष्टा - the Witness, अनुमन्ता refers as one who, thinking again and again, ordains.

On verses 13.21–13.22

Earlier also both the Lord and the Jiva have been referred by the word Purusha. Hence the word should be used accordingly in proper context. In this verse, Purusha enjoys the attributes of Prakriti is in order to refute the arguments of those who aver that the relationship of the body and its organs of sense with the actions or instrument of action is illusory. It is nowhere observed that the internal experiences of the knowledge and no-knowledge, pleasure and pain are the products of delusion. Their illusory sense is never accepted. Only those concerned with the external contacts of the body may appear to be illusory, but not those concerned with internal experiences. The external experiences should be considered as illusory only when there enough weighty evidences are available.

“स्वतन्त्रकारणं तु परम् एवेत्याह - उपदृष्टाऽनुमन्तेति | - सर्वेभ्य उपरो दृष्टा यदुपदृष्टानामकः | स्वातन्त्र्यात् स्वानुकूल्येन मत्या प्रेरयति स्म यत् | अनुमन्तेति कथितः स्वयं प्रभुरजो हरिः | महाशक्तिर्यतो विष्णुर्महेश्वर इतीरितः | परमत्वाच्च तस्यैव ह्यनुमन्तुत्वमुच्यते | स एव सर्वदेहेषु देहिनोऽन्यो व्यवस्थितः || इति च | मां विद्धि सर्वक्षेत्रेषु इति देहेऽप्युक्तः | तेनाहमेव स इति दर्शयति ||” - The Supreme Lord is the Independent cause. the Witness, Ordainer thus has been clarified. Since He is the witness, the overseer on all others, He is known as उपद्रष्टा. Since according one's own volition, he energizes the mind independently, He is known as अनुमन्ता, Sri Hari is the Lord. Since extremely powerful, He is called Sri Vishnu. Since He is the supreme among all, He alone is the Ordainer. He alone abides separately within each of all the bodies, having said - know Me to be abiding in all सर्वक्षेत्र, abiding in the bodies. Such assertion shows that He alone IS.

21 "For, it is when the Purusha dwells within the Prakriti that he experiences the Prakriti-born (modifications of the) Constituent-aspects. It is his attachment to these Constituent-aspects that becomes the cause in the matter of his births into good or evil orders of beings. (981)

He (Purusha) is bodiless and crippled; (He) is poverty-stricken, worn-out, and the oldest of all (the old). He is male only in name, is neither a female nor a neuter, in short we cannot predicate anything definite about him. He has neither ears nor eyes, neither hands nor feet, neither any form nor any colour, and exists only in name. Oh Arjuna, but mark that (this one) however, has nothing (that is cognisable); in him is the husband of Prakriti. Yet he has got to experience pleasure and pain inspite of his nature described above. As for himself he is non-active, apathetic, and non-enjoyer, yet his faithful wife (Māyā) makes him enjoy all. She makes some movements with the small proportion of form and quality she possesses, and makes a display of queer (wonderful) games. This Prakriti is called "Gunamayī" (गुणमयी-Consisting of qualities)- nay she is the Gunas incarnate. She makes herself felt in diverse forms and qualities, and changing every moment, makes the material world arrogant through her arrogance. She gives publicity to names, creates love through (her) affection, and awakens the senses. It is quite absurd to call the mind neuter, since Prakriti makes it enjoy all the three worlds. She is as it were a big island of hallucination and she is pervasion incarnate and from her are created innumerable mental disorders (विकार). She is the very bower of the creeper-plant in the form of desires, the very spring season in the woods of infatuation, and is well known by the name of 'Divine Illusion'. She develops literature, creates this universe of forms and (names), brings perpetual raids of mundane existence (makes it possible to have an unbroken experience of this world). The arts emanate from her, the lores are made by her, while the desires, perception, and actions are born of her. She is the very mint of all the sounds as also the abode of all miracles-nay she is the very author of the entire world-drama. The creation and dissolution (of the universe) are her morning and evening occupations. This apart-she is a wonderful fascination (मोहन) in the world. She is the helpmate to the unique-Brahman (अद्वयाचे दुसरे) and the kith and kin of the unattached (ब्रह्म), since she herself stays in a house in the sphere of zero (void). Such being the enormity of her power (of her सौभाग्य-the glorious state of wifehood), she can control the uncontrollable (Purusha). In fact, there are no attributes (उपाधि) to Purusha. There exists nothing in him: he is perfectly apathetic: yet Prakriti herself entirely becomes all (that pertains) to him. Prakriti herself becomes the origin of the self-born, the form of the formless, and his state and position. She also becomes the desires of the desireless, the contentment of the complete, the race and kindred of the raceless (and kinless). (She also becomes) the symbol of the indescribable, the measure of the measureless, the mind of the mindless and also his intellect. She stands as the form of the formless, action of the actionless, and the egotism of the non-egoist. She becomes the name of the nameless, the birth of the birthless, as also the processes of the action itself. (She also becomes) the quality of the qualityless, the feet of the feetless, the ears of the earless and the eyes of the eyeless. (She is) the feelings of the unfeeling, limbs of the limbless — in fact she becomes all (the attributes) of Purusha. Such is Prakriti, that pervades and drags the attributeless into attributes. Whatever the inherent quality exists in him (Purusha) is eclipsed and transfigured into the quality of Prakriti. Just as the Moon gets invisible on the Amāvasyā day, or just as pure gold mixed with one 'Val' (बाल)-alloy, gets reduced to five from fifteen points of fineness, or just as the pious one gets deluded (and defiled) when possessed by a ghost, or just as the clouds arising in the sky transform a good (bright) day into a bad (dull and gloomy) one, or like the milk in the abdomen (udder) of the cow or the fire remaining latent in the firewood or like the brilliance (light) of a jewel covered in a linen, or like a king reduced to the state of helplessness, or like a lion overwhelmed by malady,— in all these ways Purusha loses all his splendour, after identifying himself with Prakriti. A man wide awake, after suddenly falling asleep, is compelled to experience various events during his dream state; in that way Purusha has got to experience the Gunas because he identifies himself with Prakriti. Just as one indifferent to worldly affairs, gets fettered on account of his association with a woman, so becomes the state of the birthless and eternal Purusha and he has to bear the blows of births and deaths on account of his association with the Gunas. But, Oh Son of Pandu, it is just like this viz — when red hot iron is hammered on, it is said that the hammer blows are suffered by the fire; or with the disturbance of water, the moon-reflections in it appear more than one, and this plurality, the ignorant attribute to the moon; or when there is a mirror near by, there appear two faces (one the original and the other its reflection in the mirror); or as the surface of a crystal appears to be of reddish colour in the proximity of red turmeric powder. In that way, the birthless one appears to have diverse births on account of his association with the Gunas, but in reality he transcends them (births). In that manner take it that he (Purusha) too feels he is getting births in high and low (good or evil) orders (in the social scale and the world of lower animals), in the way a (casteless) ascetic, while in a dream should feel that he is of the lowest caste. Therefore, Purusha in his pristine nature, (who is one with the Supreme Essence) has never to experience becoming and vicissitudes (births and deaths), the whole conception of his experiencing (these births and deaths) having its origin in his association with the Gunas.

'Puruṣaḥ prakṛtistho* hi bhuṅkte prakṛtijāṅguṇān'—In

* Here the term 'Prakṛtistha' (seated in the Matter) denotes 'Śarīrastha'

fact, the spirit is not seated in Matter (body). But because of its identification with a body, it assumes the body as 'I', and 'Mine', and is thus said to be seated in the body. Such a spirit, experiences pleasure and pain, in agreeable and disagreeable circumstances. This is said by the way that the spirit enjoys the modes born of Matter.

As in a bus accident, the bus driver is held responsible for an accident because of his attachment (responsibility) to the bus, and so he is punished. It is because of the spirit's attachment to the body, that it (the spirit) enjoys the fruit of action performed by the body. If it is not attached to a body and it feels all actions to be performed by Prakṛti alone, (Gītā 13/29), it will not have to accept the fruit of actions.

'Kāraṇaṃ guṇasaṅgo'sya sadasadyonijanmasa'—Good wombs are those, in which there is abundance of pleasure, while bad ones are those, that bear much pain. The spirit, takes birth in good and evil wombs, because of its attachment to the modes, born of Prakṛti.

The three modes—Sattva, Rajas and Tamas, are born of Prakṛti. All the worldly objects and actions, are born of the modes of Prakṛti. When the spirit attaches itself, to these modes, it has to take birth in good or bad wombs. If it is not seated in the body and has no feeling of 'I'ness and 'Mine'ness in this body, but remains established in the self, it will not be an enjoyer of pleasure and pain. It will become equanimous in pleasure and pain i.e., will become 'Svastha', (Gītā 14/24). It can establish a relationship with Nature, or it can get fixed in the oversoul. It cannot merge in the non-self, because non-self (Matter) is perishable, while the self is eternal. Both, belong to two different

(seated in the body). Here is the context of 'Puruṣa and Prakṛti'. So the Puruṣa is said to be seated in Prakṛti. In fact the spirit is not seated in the body, but by not realizing its situation in the self, it assumes its identification with the body.

classes. But its getting established in the oversoul, is axiomatic, as both are of the same class. Bondage is unnatural to it, while identity with the oversoul is natural to it. Bondage is painful to it, while merger in the oversoul is pleasant to it.

In the ego of the self, where there is discriminative faculty, to know a distinction between, Prakṛti and Puruṣa, there only exists ignorance to assume identity, with Prakṛti. By assuming identity, this Puruṣa, is called 'Prakṛtiṣṭha' (seated in Nature), and the sense of 'I' and 'mine' increases. This is attachment, to the modes of Prakṛti. This attachment binds him (Puruṣa) (Gītā 14/5) and therefore, he meets with destiny, according to predominance of the modes, of Nature (Gītā 14/18).

**Appendix—**The Lord in the second half of the nineteenth verse and in the first half of the twentieth verse has described 'Prakṛti', and in the second half of the twentieth verse and here in this verse, He has described 'Puruṣa'.

Attachment to objects, persons and actions is 'guṇasaṅga' (attachment to modes) which is the cause of birth and death. Attachment to the modes is transient while detachment from the modes is eternal. Detachment is nature of the Self—'asaṅgo'hyayaṁ puruṣaḥ' (Bṛhadā 4/3/15). If we are not attached to the transient or the modes, we can't follow the wheel of birth and death.

'I' is inert (non-self) (Prakṛti) and 'am' is sentient (self) (Puruṣa) and 'I am'—this is the identification of the Self with the non-Self. In 'I am' there is the sense of doership and enjoyership. If 'I' does not remain, then 'am' will not remain but 'is' will persist. As there is no identification of a lump of iron with fire, so the lump of iron remains lying on the earth, while fire from this hot lump of iron merges into the formless fire-element, similarly 'ego' persists in Prakṛti and 'am' (being a form of 'is') merges into 'is'. In 'is' there is neither doership nor enjoyership. It means that 'am' is attracted towards pleasures, 'is' is not attracted; 'am' becomes the doer and enjoyer, 'is' does not become the

doer and enjoyer. Therefore a striver instead of assuming 'am' should assume only 'is' viz., he should realize it.

Everyone realizes that pleasures and pains appear and disappear while the Self ever remains the same. Even the most sinful person realizes this fact. In spite of realizing this fact, a man feels happy and sad with the fleeting pleasures and pains. The reason is that attachment to pleasure and fear of pain do not let him realize that he is different from pleasure and pain—this discrimination does not work. In fact a man (the Self) does not feel happy and sad at all but he, identifying the Self with the body, assumes himself to be happy and sad. It means that pleasure (happiness) and pain (sadness) are based on his indiscriminative assumption only.

Link:—In the preceding three verses, Prakṛti (Matter) and Puruṣa (Spirit), were described. In the next verse, there is a description of Puruṣa, in particular.

(13.1000) आप ही उस स्वयं-सिद्ध की उत्पत्ति बनती है, आप ही उस निराकार की मूर्ति बनती है, और आप ही उसकी प्रतिष्ठा का स्थान बन जाती है;

(13.1016) परन्तु हे पाण्डुसुत! वे इस प्रकार होते हैं जैसे तपा हुआ लोहा पीटने से अग्नि का ही घात कहा जाता है; (13.1017) अथवा पानी हिलने से जैसे प्रतिबिम्ब इधर-उधर हिलता है और लोगों का अनेक चन्द्र दिखाई देने लगते हैं;
