By the Supreme Lord Krishna who is known as Parabrahma, intrinsic potency as the source of the Brāhman or spiritual substratum pervading all existence, it is devoid of all divisions abiding everywhere within all creatures, devas, humans etc.

But to the spiritually unaware there appears to be divisions and differences due to variegation of forms.

What Lord Krishna has stated in verse two of this chapter that those who are knowledgeable of the Kṣetrajña are spiritually enlightened about the ātma or immortal soul existing equally within all living entities distinctly separate from the physical body although residing within the etheric heart of all sentient beings.

When textural quotes are read as I am a deva, I am a man, etc. it is only referring to the body, the physical form shrouding the ātma due to karma, the resultant reactions from past life activities.

To comprehend the ātma as a distinct, separate immortal entity can be discerned by reflection and contemplation inasmuch as the ātma provides the support for the aggregate combination of the five fundamental elements of earth, water, fire, air and ether which in varying degrees make up the physical body.

So Parabrahma is known as bhūta bhartṛ, the maintainer of all beings as distinguished from the maintained.

Since Parabrahma exists after the time of universal destruction He is known as grasiṣṇu the annihilator of the material elements as distinguished from the annihilated.

Because Parabrahma is the causer of transformations He is known as prabha viṣṇu, the creator of universal manifestation as distinguished from the created.

Inasmuch as no such properties are ever present in a dead body it can be correctly concluded that mere matter possessed Kṣetra or field of activity is never capable of being the maintainer, the annihilator or the creator whereas the Kṣetrajña is capable.

On verses 13.15–13.17

- Know one's Self by one's own Self, since being wise in Wisdom in this manner, He is the object of Wisdom. It is understood that He is Wisdom through other means, and then the words ज्ञेयं यत् तत् earlier explained will be repeated. Here in the latter statement, He denies the seeming contradiction how the same one could the means as well as the end of the enquiry. Keshava knows Himself through His own Self alone. His knowing, thus, is also not being dependent on anyone else. In certain cases, He comes to be known by others also. But without His grace He cannot be known by others. But in knowing His own Self or in knowing the Self of others, He has no personal goal to be achieved. He is self-illuminated; therefore He is the Best of the Persons. For the Jivas, His knowledge is through His grace alone.

16 “Undivided amongst the beings, and withal as though divided, it abides. As the Sustainer of the beings it is to be understood: as (their) devourer and procreator. (916)

It is not (the thing) that the sweetness of the sea of milk is greater in the deep middle and less near the shore; in that way it is equally perfect everywhere. There is never any stoppage or break in its state of pervasion in all the diverse orders of beings, such as insect class engendered by sweat and others (स्वेदजादीप्रभृती). Oh you, the leading one amongst the hearers (श्रोतेमुखटिळक) the moonshine is all one without distinction even in thousands of earthen pots full of water, or the salt (taste) pervades each and every particle forming heaps of salt, and is of one and the same kind; or there is the same sweet taste in each and every (jointed) part (कांडे) of sugar-can. Likewise, the Supreme Brahman pervades as the One single entity in all beings of diverse orders and is also the root cause of the universe, Oh! Sensible One. Therefore, it is the support of all the diverse beings with names and forms that get created from it, in the way the sea is (the support) of all the waves (which get created from the sea). It abides uninterruptedly the same (in the beings) throughout the three stages viz. creation, maintenance and destruction (of their lives) in the way the body is the same all through its three stages such as childhood etc. Or in the way the sky does not change with the three stages of the day viz. evening, morning and noon. It (Supreme Brahman) is called Brahmadev when it creates the universe, it is named God Vishnu when it maintains it and it is named Rudra when it destroys it: when all these three Gunas or stars disappear, it abides in the zero (शून्य -void). That zero state (void) which remains behind after the triad of the three Gunas ceases to exist-that very zero state (void) is what is propounded in and accepted by the Shruti (Scripture) as the “GREAT ZERO”- (महाशून्य Great Void) state.

'Avibhaktam ca bhūteṣu vibhaktamiva ca sthitam'— Actually, there is one indivisible existence, (God) pervading in all diverse forms. Division, is a mere appearance. Just as space, though really one and indivisible, appears divided into innumerable forms; so God though really undivided, seems to be spread over beings. In the twenty-seventh verse of this chapter also, the Lord declares, 'A seer beholds the Supreme Lord, abiding equally in all perishable beings.' Similarly, in the twentieth verse of the eighteenth chapter also, while describing Sāttvika knowledge, He declares, 'The knowledge by which the one Imperishable Being, is seen in all existences is Sāttvika.'

'Bhūtabhartṛ ca tajjñeyam grasiṣṇu prabhaviṣṇu ca'—The Almighty God, Who should be known (13/2) and Who is worth knowing (13/12) has been described as the sustainer (Lord Viṣṇu), the destroyer (Lord Śiva) and creator (Lord Brahmā). The same Lord, as Brahmā with the predominance of 'rajoguṇa' (activity) creates the universe, as Viṣṇu with the predominance of 'sattvaguṇa' sustains it and as Śiva with the predominance of 'tamoguṇa' destroys it, yet He remains untainted by these guṇas (modes) having full control over them.

**Appendix—**In this verse there is the description of the entire form of God. As the world from the material point of view is one, so is also the Real Entity (God) one and undivided. As the world consisting of the five elements, in spite of being one, appears in the form of different objects, persons (insentient-sentient, unmoving-moving) etc., similarly God in spite of being one, appears in different forms. It means that God in spite of being one, exists in several forms; and in spite of existing in several forms, is one. The Real Entity can never be two because if they are two, it means that the unreal is included in it.

He Who creates is God and He Who is created is also God.

He Who sustains is God and He Who is sustained is also God. He Who destroys is God and He Who is destroyed is also God.

*Link:—In the previous verse, the Lord said that He who is worth knowing, is the creator, sustainer and destroyer of the entire universe. In the next verse, it is explained that He is the light of all lights.*
