“Women, farmers and peasants, and even those who are born into marginalised social circumstances (pāpa-yoni), can attain the supreme state by taking refuge in Me. How much more then the well-born Brāhmaṇas and royal sages who are naturally devoted to me!

Therefore, royal sage that you are, having been born into this impermanent and unhappy world, stricken by the threefold affliction meditate upon Me, as you traverse the path of life.”

Śrī Krishna now describes the nature of Bhakti:

“न भवत्येव प्रायस्तदभक्तो दुराचारः | तथाऽपि बहुपुण्येन यदि कथञ्चिद् भवति, तर्हि साधुरेव मन्तव्यः |” - Normally, one who is of evil nature can never become His devotee. But because of many good merits, the evil ones should be considered to have become noble persons.

Soon becomes a man of good soul which is possible only to those who have the divine essence in them. “The one who does not give up evil ways, one who is not devoted, one who has no equipoise cannot become the pure devotee of Sriman Narayana. But the gods and sages even though some time are evil minded become in due course best of the devotees, because they are aware of the essential nature of the Lord”, thus in Shandilya section. Therefore, those who fraudulently try to prove their devotion should be known in this manner. However those who have committed slight demerits may be devoted by association with saints. In others, simple devotion may be accepted. “those who seek sensual pleasures, they are, verily, the deceivers. They being the practitioners of low behavior, true devotion can never spring”, thus, in Vishnu Puraana.

In have never spoken un-Truth ever in the past. I have always been worshipping my Teacher (Guru). I have never divulged the secret which is Supreme. The four Truths told in the scriptures are enshrined in me. I am always equal towards friends as well as towards enemies. Surrendering to the Lord, I have been ever propitiating Him with undistracted devotion. How then have I not been able to see the eternal Form which is pure and propitious ?” Thus in Moksha Dharma scripture.

“ज्ञानाभावे च साम्यग्भक्त्यभावात् | तथा हि गौतमखिलेषु - विना ज्ञानं कुतो भक्तिः कुतो भक्तिः विना च तत् | इति | भक्तिः परे स्वानुभवो विरक्तिरन्यत्र चैतत्त्रिकमेककालम् || इति भागवते ||” - Without right Wisdom true devotion is not possible. Thus in Gautam Section - “Without wisdom how can there be devotion ?” And if there is no devotion how could there be that (realization)?” “Devotion towards the Lord, Wisdom and aversion to all other things - all these three go together”, thus also in Bhagavat Puraana

A male is born again as a female because of desires or some demerit. These spiritual female forms are unlimitedly superior to those who have taken female forms due to the demerit of desires. All Jivas attain the body of skin and flesh according to their attributes. In liberation, even after experiencing the effects of prior karmas, each one lives according to their true attribute, even the statement merits even for those born in evil-wombs can be accepted, because of the declaration in Bhavishya Purana.

33 "How much more (certainly) then the pious Brahmins and the Royal-sages who are My devotees? Having come into this impermanent and joyless world, do thou become My devotee. (475)

How much more worthily do the holy Brahmins win that divine home? For, amongst the religious castes, they indeed are the princely majesties enthroned with royal insignia; heavenly paradise is a free gift divinely bequeathed to the Brahmins, whose knowledge is the mother (fountain-spring) of all sacred lores in this world. They are the very Gods on earth, embodiment as it were in flesh and blood of holy penances, the rising visible glory of all sacred waters. In name, the holy art of sacrifice has its true eternal home, and the very Vedas shine forth as armour-clad; all auspicious array of things is reared in Fortune's lap of their august and blissful presence. Virtue and right action are nourished and fostered on the lap of their high resolve, and truth has its life-breath by their firm will. By the Brahmins' benedictory utterance, fire is blessed into a God of everlasting life, who then is given a resting place by the sea out of love for the Brahmins. For the Brahmin's sake, did I once part company with the Goddess Lakshmi, take-off my necklace—"Kaustubha"—from my person, and offered My breast-basin to have the imprint of the Brahmin's sacred foot. That sacred imprint have I since borne with pride wherewith to preserve My divine glory. The Brahmin's wrath, Oh thou excellent warrior, is the birth-place of the all-consuming, destructive deities of Time, Fire and Rudra; and the eightfold supernatural powers come as a free gift of his benedictory utterance. Wherefore then need it be said in (so many) words that worthy Brahmins of such venerable piety, with an intensely passionate devotion to Me reach their divine home in Me? For knowest thou not that even the unworthy Nimb trees nearby, touched off by the breeze, wafting along the sandal trees, rise to the eminence of besmearing the foreheads of Gods? And could thou doubt that the sandal wood itself fails in reaching that glorious position, so that only words should put that truth into thy mind? The crescent moon is unceasingly worn on the head by the God Shiva in the hope of cooling down; how then should the sandal wood, wholly perfect and soothing, and more fragrant, be not worthy of covering the holy body? When way-side waters flowing into the Ganges run to the ocean without further ado should the sacred Ganges herself reach other destinations? May the devotee be a Brahmin seer or a Kshatriya prince, I am in all things their protector, the very life-breath of their mind and soul; and in truth I am the support of their life. How strange unconcern would be in any one sailing in a boat pierced at hundred places? And how should a man risk his life under a hail storm of missiles? How should one, exposed to an impending stone, fail to protect oneself? And should a man tormented with disease be unmindful of cure? And it would be queer indeed, if one should not escape from flames threatening him on all sides; and it is no less queer in men born into this mortal world not to betake themselves to the path of devotion. And what indeed is that self-confidence on the strength of which earth-born men, scorning the path of devotion, feel secure in the full enjoyment of worldly pleasures? Or barring pious devotion to Me, how should mortals count upon youth and worldly wits to yield the full measure of life's joys? All that suffering mortals endure is for the pleasure of the body and that body is ever wasting away in the jaws of death. Alas! In this mortal world bundles of miseries are being unloaded and death is being measured out in huge heaps till at the last stage the soul arrives in the human market! Where life is not worth an hour's purchase, what goods of happiness can man expect from this warehouse? Can you kindle a light by blowing up ashes? As well might you hope to win your way to immortal life by swallowing the extract of poisonous root. Sensuous enjoyment is thus a hotbed of miseries, and what a pity indeed that the benighted human soul never loathes it? Happiness in this mortal world is as futile a mockery as healing the footrot by cutting the head. Where then is the earth-born man, who has listened to the tale of happiness, in this mortal life? How can (one) expect to enjoy sound sleep on a bed of embers? In this world the moon herself is infected with the wasting disease. Everything overhead rises to sink, and utter misery under the cover of pleasure envelops one and all; it is here in mortal life that even a sprout of enjoyment is already strangled by the malignant cover of unlucky turn, and death steals into the (secret chamber of the) womb to grip the poor helpless yet unborn soul. And while the mortal sufferer is made to brood over fatuous vanities, he is suddenly snatched away by death to a place of which little is known. Not even the most searching glance has ever come across a single return foot-print along the manifold exits from this life, and all the myths and legends of this miserable world recount but untold tales of mortals who have been gathered into the dateless night. Not even the creator in his appointed time can, with any measure of final utterance, extol to the skies the glorious impermanence of this world. And how amazing is the utter unconcern of men born into this miserable existence? For these niggardly wretches stint a pie towards their real good in this or other worldly life, and yet become munificent in their evil designs. In their eyes men ensnared in lascivious pleasures are now at the summit of ambition and he is reckoned worldly-wise that is enslaved by greed. Aging, that shortens the lease of life and makes body and mind shrink in power, is held to raise men to the eminence of venerable elders. The yearly return of the birth-day of the child is fondly celebrated as a festival, with total unconcern about the shortened life. From the birth onwards the child is slowly caught in the meshes of all-devouring time, and yet every advancing year is a festivity. Alas! While not putting up with the imprecation 'die', they lament the deaths of kith and kin, and never heed that life's days are numbered. Even while the snake threatens to swallow the frog, the frog smacks its lips at sight of a fly; even so, human mortals are slaves of their greed, of what heaven knows! Alas! How sadly and monstrously perverse indeed is the array of things in this mortal world? Being fated to be born into such a world, shake off the dust of thy feet and betake thyself to the path of devotion and love; so shalt thou reach My eternal divine abode.

'Kim punarbrāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayastathā'—When, even the vilest sinners and beings born of the womb of sin, as well as womenfolk, Vaiśyas and Śūdras by taking refuge in Him, attain Him, no wonder then, that the holy Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas by taking refuge in Him should attain Him i.e., they

will attain Him, certainly.

The term 'Punya' (holy), used here is antonym to the term 'Durācārī' (sinner), used in the thirtieth verse, while the term 'Brāhmaṇāḥ' is antonym to the term 'Pāpayonayaḥ', used in the thirty-second verse. It means, that Brāhmaṇas are holy, both by actions and birth. Similarly, for the Kṣatriyas the terms 'Rṣi' (saint) and 'rāja' (royal), have been used to denote their purity of birth and actions.

The term 'Bhaktāḥ', has been used to emphasize the fact, that those Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas having a virtuous conduct, in the previous birth, as well as in this birth, through devotion attain Him, without any doubt. Moreover, 'Punyā brāhmaṇāḥ' and 'Rajarṣayaḥ', these two terms, denote external purity of actions and birth, while 'Bhaktāḥ' denotes internal purity, because a devotee takes refuge in the Lord, from his heart.

'Anityamasukham lokamimam prāpya bhajasva mām'—This human birth, is the last of all births, because it destroys all the innumerable, future births. A man, can be a source of bliss to the Lord Himself, by being an ardent devotee. This birth is sacred, but is transient. The body may die any moment. So, a man should attain salvation, as soon as possible. This body is joyless, there is no happiness in it. In the fifteenth verse of the eighth chapter it has been called, the 'abode of pain'. Therefore, a man should not hanker after worldly pleasures, during this human life and waste his precious time.

Here, the expression 'Imam lokam', stands for human body, of which the only aim is God-realization, as according to the ordinance of the Lord, this is the last of all births. If, in this life he does not attain God, he misses a golden opportunity, which will not be available to him, in other species. So He advises men to worship Him, without aiming at perishable objects and without attaching any value to them. The Lord's exhorting a devotee, to worship Him does not mean, that this worship will be of any benefit to the Lord, it will benefit the devotee only.

A Vital Fact

The man (soul), being a fraction of the Lord, is pure, sentient and imperishable. Then, by having affinity with transient evils, how can he himself be sinful and how can the Lord regard Him, as sinful? Being attached to the transient body and the world, he gets engaged in evils and sins. So, as soon as, he renounces that affinity of 'Tness and 'Mineness' with the body and the world, he comes to know that he is pure. Similarly, animals, birds and pariah etc., born of the womb of sin, become free from sinful actions performed, in the previous birth. So, they by taking refuge in the Lord, can also attain Him. Thus the Lord, has referred to sinners of this birth and of the previous birth.

Then, the Lord describes, those who are mediocre. First, He talks about women, including, those of Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas. Then, He talks about the twice-born viz., Vaiśyas, who are not so virtuous, as Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas. Then, He describes, Śūdras who are inferior to the twice-born viz., Vaiśyas. So, He declares, that even women, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras taking refuge in Him, attain Him. Thus there is no wonder that those Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas, who are holy by birth and actions, should attain Him.

The Lord here (9/30—33) has mentioned seven kinds of persons even they can seek devotion to God. They are, the vilest sinners, those born of a womb of sin, womenfolk, Vaiśyas, Śūdras, Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas. Lord Kṛṣṇa, should have described the holy Brāhmaṇa or Kṣatriya, first, but first of all, He mentions the vilest sinner. The reason is, that the lower a person, the more loving he is to the Lord, because he is not proud, of his virtues. He naturally, considers himself lower and inferior. So the Lord, names him first. In the twelfth chapter also, He declares that devotees who have attained perfection, are dear to Him while, strivers, are extremely dear to Him (Gītā 12/13—20).

Here, a point needs attention. The Lord, has divided persons, into seven categories according to their caste, (Brāhmaṇa, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya and Śūdra); conduct, (vilest sinner and that born of

womb of sin) and sex (womanfolk), to emphasize the fact, that beings belonging to any caste, having any sort of conduct and of any sex, by, worshipping God, can attain Him as they are all fractions of God. They have become extraordinary, not because of their caste, conduct and sex, but because of their devotion, to the Lord.

In the seventh chapter, the Lord has divided devotees into four groups according to their attitudes, and here He has divided them into seven groups according to their caste, conduct and sex, in order to explain that all devotees, without any distinction of caste, creed, conduct and sex etc., are deserving of God-realization. So, no one should lose heart, as far as devotion and God-realization, are concerned. If they have a disinclination for Him. So they themselves can develop inclination for Him as well. They are free to and capable of doing so.

**Appendix**—The Lord from the thirtieth verse to the thirty-third verse mentioned seven kinds of persons who are qualified (eligible) for devotion and God-realization—they are the vilest sinners of this birth, sinners of the previous birth, womenfolk, Vaiśyas, Śudras, Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriyas. No person remains out of these seven kinds of persons. Every human being is eligible for God-realization without any distinction of his birth, caste; and even if he committed so many sins in his previous birth. Brāhmaṇa, Kṣatriya, Vaiśya and Śūdra—all the four Varṇas have been mentioned in this verse. Anyone may not think that only men have been included, so the Lord has also mentioned the womenfolk. The persons such as Yavana, Hūṇa, Khasa etc., who are below the people of the four Varṇas in rank have been included in 'Pāpayoni' (born of sinful wombs). Besides human beings other beings (birds and beasts etc.,) can also be included in 'Pāpayoni' because every living being is a fragment of God and therefore there is no bar for anyone from the side of God that one can't turn towards God.

He who is committing sins at present is a 'durācārī' and

he who because of being a sinner in the previous birth, is born of sinful womb is a 'Pāpayoni'. It means that even the vilest sinner and the one born of the most sinful womb, is entitled to God-realization. Therefore a man by taking into consideration his caste and conduct, should not get disappointed as far as God-realization is concerned. Caste and conduct are transient and unreal but a man's affinity with God is eternal and real. Therefore God accepts the relationship of devotion, not of caste and conduct—

kaha raghupati sunu bhāmini bātā, mānaū eka bhagati kara nātā jāti pāti kula dharma baRāi, dhana bala parijana guna caturāi bhagati hīna nara sohai kaisā, binu jala bārida dekhla jaisā

The worldly people see the outward caste, conduct, rather than the inward reality; but God sees the reality that a man (the self) is His fragment.

In the sixteenth verse of the seventh chapter, the Lord according to the inner feelings of devotees, has divided them into four kinds—'Arthārthī' (seeker of wealth) 'Ārta' (afflicted), 'Jijñāsu' (seeker of knowledge) and 'Jñānī' (wise devotee); and here according to their outward assumption (caste and conduct) from the worldly point of view, He has mentioned seven kinds. In the seventh chapter there is description of those devotees who are engaged in the worship of God and here is the description of those persons who can divert themselves towards God. It means that in spite of the distinction of 'Varṇa' (order of life), 'Āśrama' (stage of life), dress, castes and sects etc., all the people can become devotees of these four kinds—arthārthī, ārta, jijñāsu and jñānī and can attain God. As far as God-realization is concerned, in it all are one, no one is low (inferior) or high (superior). A being may be born of any womb, he is neither disqualified for God-realization, nor was, nor will be nor can be disqualified.

'Kīri punarbrāhmaṇāḥ puṇyā bhaktā rājarṣayastathā'—The purpose of using the term 'bhaktāḥ' in the middle of the half

verse is that there is not the glory of the holy Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriya-saints but there is glory of their devotion. It means that the Lord is neither (envious of) impartial to sinners of the worst conduct and to these who are born of sinful wombs nor He is partial to the holy Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriya saints. He is the same to all beings (Gītā 9/29). But he who worships God with love (devotion), he may be of any region, guise, varṇa, āśrama, caste, creed etc., he has his intimate relationship with God—'mayi te teṣu cāpyaham' (Gītā 9/29). Therefore the sinners of the worst conduct, these born of sinful wombs, womenfolk, Vaiśyas, Śūdrās, Brāhmaṇas and Kṣatriya, all the seven become one as far as devotion is concerned, no difference remains in them. Therefore the Lord orders Arjuna to worship Him—'bhajasva mām'. 'Bhajana' (worship) means—to be inclined to God, to love God (to have one's ownership with God) and to aim at God-realization. To render service to others by regarding them as the manifestation of God, to offer things to others in disinterested manner and to help the needy and scarcity-stricken people—this is also worship.

'Anityamasukham lokamimam prāpya bhajasva mām'—Having obtained the transient and joyless human life viz., we may live alive and enjoy pleasures—having renounced such desires, we should worship God. The reason is that there is no joy in the world, there is mere illusion of joy. Similarly there is the illusion of living. We are actually not living but we are dying every moment.

In the twenty-ninth verse of this chapter the Lord declared, 'Those who worship Me with devotion, are in Me and I am also in them.' Therefore here Lord Kṛṣṇa orders Arjuna to worship Him—'bhajasva mām'.

*Link:—Lord Kṛṣṇa, from the twenty-ninth to the thirty-third verses, has described devotion and worship. How to worship Him, is made clear, in the next verse.*

(9.503) जहाँ मंगल के अंकुरों के संग ही अमंगल का आच्छादन आ गिरता है, और मृत्यु जहाँ उदररूपी घर में रक्खे हुए गर्भ को भी खोजने पहुँच जाती है, (9.504) जो वास्तव में नहीं है उसकी चिन्ता कराती है और साथ ही उसे यमदूतों के द्वारा उठवा ले जाती है, और कहाँ ले गई सो भी जान नहीं पड़ता;
