“I am in fact the Supreme Lord of all beings, the Omniscient One, who is completely self-determining, who has taken a human body out of great compassion so that I might become the refuge of all. They do not realise My true disposition of unlimited compassion, magnanimity, condescension and maternal solicitude which is the reason for My appearing in a human form. But without understanding this, the ignorant consider Me as of the same nature as other beings, because I have assumed the human form.”

On verses 9.11–9.14

What is their goal? For the deluded ones the human body makes them believe that they are like human forms, not in human form. Therefore, it is said – “In this world, O King, the things which are associated with the body are endowed with the five gross elements as willed by the Lord. The Lord, the Supreme Sriman Narayan alone is the creator of the world. Besides He is the indweller in the creatures, the giver of boons, with form as well as formless, one who is served by the un-manifest power which destroys the creation”, thus in Moksha Dharma.

There is cause for doubt between Lord's various forms of descent. Though diverse are his forms of descent no difference can be conceived between one and the other forms, in the forms of the Boar, Man-Lion, dwarf or as human being, which were ordained at the time of creation itself. There is therefore no reason for any delusion because of the difference between the original and the different forms of descent, because in all the forms there is the supreme Lord himself therefore known as भूतमहेश्वर, the Supreme Lord of the creatures. “Without beginning, without end, of complete form, the supreme, the progenitor of the gods like Brahma and others”, thus in the Babhravya section of Samaveda. “From His breath have come Rigveda etc. He is Brahman, the Leader, the performer of actions, the great ruler”.

“तेषां फलमाह | मोघाशा इति वृथाशाः | भगवद् द्वेषिभिराशितमामुष्मिकं न किञ्चिदाप्यते | यज्ञादिकर्माणि च तेषां वृथैव | ज्ञानं च - केनापि ब्रह्मरुद्रभक्त्याद्युपायेन न कश्चित् पुरुषार्थं आमुष्मिकस्तैराप्यत | इत्यर्थः | वक्ष्यति च - तानहं द्विपतः कुरान् इत्यादि | मोक्षधर्मे च - कर्मणा मनसा वाचा यो द्विप्याद् विष्णुमव्ययम् | मज्जन्ति पितरस्तस्य नरकं शश्वतीः समाः | यो द्विपाद् विवृधश्रेष्ठं देवं नरायणं प्रभुम् | कथं स भवेद् द्वेष्य आलोकान्तस्य न कस्यचित् || इति | सर्वोत्कृष्टो ज्ञानभक्ती ह यस्य नारायणे पुष्करविष्टराद्ये | सर्वावमो द्वेषयुतश्च तस्मिन् भूणान्तरघोऽप्यस्य समो नचैव || इति च सामवेदे शाण्डिल्यशाखायाम् ||” - The outcome of delusion is spoken here. For the deluded ones all hopes are worthless. For those who despise the Lord there is no deliverance. Their sacrifices and other actions also are worthless, even so is their Knowledge. Even their propitiation to Brahma, Rudra and others seeking life in the other worlds would not deliver them. “He sends the vicious ones again to this samsara”, thus in Moksha Dharma. “By performance of actions, by thoughts, by speech whoever despises the immutable Sri Vishnu, even their ancestors go to eternal perdition”, “Those who detest Sriman Narayan, best of the gods, how can they not deserve censure like that of the meanest of the human beings?”, thus in Shandilya section of Samaveda.

“द्वेषाच्चैद्यादयो नृपाः | वैरेण यन्नृपतयः शिशुपालपीडसाल्वादयो गतिविलासविलोकनाद्यैः | ध्यायन्त आकृतधियः शयनासनादौ तत्साम्यमापुरुरुक्ताधियः पुनः किम् || इत्यादि तु भगवतो भक्तपितृवज्ञापनार्थम्, स्वभक्तस्य नित्यध्यानस्तुत्यर्थं च स्वभक्तस्य कदाचिच्छापवलाद् एव च द्वेषिणोऽपि भक्तिफलमेवभगवान् ददातीति ||” - There are kings who were liberated through hatred, Through animosity the kings like Shishupala, Paundra, Salva and others imitating His special gait, enjoyment, look and even thinking ever in their sleep as well as in their normal life attained nearness to the Lord. Then, is it necessary to restate that those who are particularly attracted towards the Lord will surely be liberated? This is only for the purpose of eulogizing the Lord's compassion for those devotees who out of devotion have constant remembrance. For His devotee, even though due to the power of curses they have animosity, the Lord gives the fruits of devotion.

They were full of hatred due to the power of curses. Therefore, by mentioning previous incidents the despisers of the Lord are liberated, thus is explained. Otherwise, why would there be reference to such unconcerned events ? This is to remind that the Lord is equally compassionate to those who despise and detest, taking into consideration their previous deeds of devotion. He assures, “My devotees will never perish”. Would not otherwise statements like remembrance in any manner be contradiction. It is quite natural that those who always cherish hatred will always hate. In which case it would be surmised that those who hate their teachers would also attain the greatness of their teachers.

“न च अकृतधीत्वे विशेषः | तेषामेव हिरण्यकशिप्यादीनां पापप्रतीतेः | इति | हिरण्यकशिपुश्चापि भगवन्निन्दया तमः | विवक्षुरत्यागात् मुनोः प्रह्लादस्यानुभावतः || इति भागवते | यदनिन्दत् पिता मह्यम् इत्यारभ्य, तस्मात् पिता मे पूयेत दुस्ताद दुस्तरादधात् | इति प्रह्लादेन भगवतो वरयाचनच्च |” - There is nothing special that since the Lord accepts both the devotees and those who hate, the fruits of their action also will be identical. People like Hiranyakashipu were released from the effect of the hatred towards the Lord because of his son Prahlaada's devotion to the Lord. Beginning with “I, the one who has been insulted” to “Therefore, pardon my father from departing to the world of darkness”, thus Prahlaada having prayed for Lord's Grace.

“बहुषु गन्धेषु निषेधः | कुत्रचिदेव तदुक्तिः इति विशेषः | यस्मिंस्तदुच्यते तत्रैव च निषेध उक्तः | महातात्पर्यविरोधश्चोक्तः पुरस्तात् | अयुक्तिमदभ्यो युक्तिमन्येव च बलवन्ति वाक्यानि | युक्तयोश्चोक्ता अन्येषाम् | नचैतेषां काचिद् गतिः | साम्येऽपि वाक्ययोः लोकानुकूलानानुकूलयोरनुकूलमेव बलवत् | लोकानुकूलं च भक्तप्रियत्व, नेतरत् ||” - Many texts disagree with the statement that hatred could be one of the means towards devotion. But it is significant that it (hatred as means towards devotion) has been mentioned only in some cases. Since in the very next cases it has been discounted. The final conclusion declares opposition to hatred as one of the means. Arguments supporting the opposition are more than those which assist this contention. The arguments which deny liberation for those who hate are more powerful and valid. Even though such arguments may find equal acceptance with those who oppose, the consideration of people's acceptance cannot be neglected. Because among those who hate, love cannot be accepted normally. Therefore those sentences do not meet the general acceptance.

“उक्तं च तेषां पूर्वभक्तत्वम् - मन्येऽसुरान् भागवतांश्चयधीशे संरम्भमार्गाभिनिविष्टचित्तान् | इत्यादि चित्तानीति || अतो, न भगवद् द्वेषिणां काचिद् गतिः इति सिद्धम् || द्वेषकारणमाह राक्षसीम् इति ||” - It has been previously stated in conclusion about devotion that “I consider these asura - un-divine devotees as having been of evil minded” etc. Therefore it is established that those who hate the Lord can never have liberation. This is because of special reference to them as raakshasi demonic.

To show that the others do not hate Him, speaks of the great-souled ones in these verses.

- मानुषी means having the form of human being. “Even though He is Sri Vishnu, by His own will he has taken shelter in the body”. But considering others as equal or considering them not as distinct or assuming incompleteness or defects in the Lord, considering difference between Lord’s Dharma and his descent in body etc. is like insulting the Lord Janaardana. All such unpropitious actions are worthless, who do not know Keshava. They attain the world of darkness. Therefore the Lord should always be considered of Pure Consciousness, without any defects and Complete in all attributes, thus in Bhavaisbya Parva.

11 "Those under delusion, not cognisant of my real Nature, mis-prize Me, the great Lord of (all) beings who have assumed a human body: (140)

If out of mortal dread of mundane existence of birth and death, you shrink from it and feel the desire for uniting with My own life, you must hold on to this path-way of truth: or else you will fall into the path of gross error. To persons affected with jaundice, the moon-light appears yellow: in that way the errant soul sees in My pure Essential Being impurities (imperfections). To one who has his palate spoilt through fever, even the milk tastes bitter: in the same way, I am mistaken for a personal being though I am not one. Therefore, oh Dhananjaya, I repeat this caution: do not lose sight of this secret truth. A superficial vision (स्थूलदृष्टि) (of seeing Me) or a crude way of knowing comes to naught. Seeing Me through a superficial vision is no real vision, since no one can become immortal with unreal nectar (taken) in a dream. Ordinarily people claim to know Me from such crude and superficial vision; but this sort of outward knowing keeps them from real knowledge (about it), just as the greedy swan is deluded and ruined by mistaking the reflections of stars in water for jewels; of what avail is it to run to a mirage as if it were the holy Ganges, or to hold in hand a Babul tree taking it as a Kalpataru (desire-yielding tree), or to hold in hand a boaconstrictor, taking it to be a wreath of jewels? What avails it again to pick up flints taking them as jewels, or to hold in a four-mouthed bag (झोळी) live coal of the *catachu* wood, taking it to be a treasure (निधान), or to imitate a lion that mistakes his own reflection in a well for a real lion and leaps into death? Even so, is the reflection of moon in water—not the moon—clasped by them that give themselves up to My visible form in worldly life. And to cling to such fond conceit blindly is as vain as to make a porridge meal yield the effects of ambrosia. How on earth would My everlasting Essence be disclosed to them that set their mind's faith blindly on things of the earth? Can one setting along the Easterly direction ever hope to reach Western shores? And could one ever know My changeless, pure and perfect being merely knowing this gross universe of a ceaseless flow of changes? Can one be said to have drunk water merely by tasting foam or froth? Thus it comes to pass that men that have their minds blinded by this delusion try to take the universe as My real Being, and then attribute to Me earthly fortunes like births and deaths. Me, whose being has no name, they call by a name; to Me they attribute activity though I am free from all activity; and My incorporeal Essence they imagine to be embodied: (they) impute form to My Being which is without a form: My personality that is above attribute they endow with attributes and make Me subject to rules of duty, though I am beyond good and evil: (they) impute to Me caste, when I am not of any caste, quality to one who is without it, feet and hands, when I am without them: also (they) impute limit to My unlimited being, a local habitation to one who is Omnipresent (all-pervading). It is all like dreaming a forest while you are asleep in your bed. And further, they invest Me with ears when I am beyond them, eyes when I am free from this limitation, and make Me belong to a clan when I am without it. They impute manifestation to Me who am non-manifest; desire to one who is beyond all desires; contentment to one who is himself the source of self-contentment. They offer clothes and ornaments to Me, who am above clothes and ornaments, and consider Me as being created when I am the cause of all. Into an idol am I—the self-existent—embodied and installed and invoked. They invoke Me and bid Me farewell, when I am eternal. I am eternally self-identified, and yet they impute to Me all stages of life, such as childhood, youth and old age. One without a second, I am made manifold; free from all touch of action, I am made the doer of action; above all enjoyment. I am made the subject of enjoyment. Eulogies are bestowed on what is taken as My clan and family, though I do not cling to any clan. I am eternal, and yet they are distressed at My passing away. They fancy Me having friends and foes, though I am the indweller of all. I am the very abode of supreme bliss, and yet they attribute to Me desire for different sorts of pleasures, and I am abiding evenly everywhere and yet they attribute to Me a definite place of residence. Verily I live in all beings, yet they attribute to Me taking sides with one and wrathfully killing another. Thus I am made the subject of almost all the human frailties; such indeed is their false belief. They devotedly worship as God any idol they see before them, and throw it away as Godless as soon as it gets cracked. In such manifold ways they imagine Me as an embodied human being, and their erroneous belief keeps out of their reach real knowledge of My true Being.

'Param bhāvamajānanto mama bhūtamaheśvaram'—The Great Lord, is He, Who is ruler, patron, director and supervisor of nature, from Whom, Nature derives power to create, preserve and destroy, the animate and inanimate beings, and Who is the master of the gods, who control their own worlds, to which different beings go, according to their actions. Without His will, not even a leaf of a tree moves. This, is His lordliness. This has been described here, by the expression, 'Bhūtamaheśvaram'.

By 'Param bhāvam', He means, that fools do not know His supreme nature, that He is free, to make any drastic change. They do not know, that He transcends the perishable Matter, is also superior to the imperishable soul, and He, is known as the Supreme Person, in the Vedas (Gītā 15/18). So they ignore Him by taking Him as an ordinary mortal, in human form.

'Mānuṣim tanumāśritam'—They, treat the Incarnation of the Lord, as an ordinary human being. As a common man, by identifying himself with the body, thinks that the family, honour or dishonour, is his own, and gain and loss of property etc., is also, his own. As common beings, were not manifest before birth and will not be manifest after death, they are manifest, only in the interim (2/28), and deluded persons, treat Him as a common man. They regard Him, as a slave to the human body, like a common man.

The human body of the Lord, is not the fruit of any action. He incarnates by His own free-will (Śrīmadbhāgavata 10/33/35) as a fish, a tortoise, or a boar etc., He does not depend on a body, but the body, an evolute of Nature, depends on Him, because He manifests Himself, keeping His Nature under control (Gītā 4/6).

Fools, treating the Lord as an ordinary being, do not seek refuge in Him, because they do not know, His divine play, rather, they consider Him, as a slave to a body. The same fact, has been pointed out, in the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth verses of the seventh chapter, when the Lord declares, 'Not knowing My unsurpassable and undecaying supreme state, these ignorant folk, do not recognise Me, as the unborn and imperishable Supreme Spirit.' So, they instead of taking refuge in the Lord, seek refuge, in other gods (Gītā 7/20).

'Avajānantī mām* mūḍhā'—Fools disregard the Lord, under Whose supervision Nature brings forth and merges infinite universes, Who controls the activities of the universes and Who by His grace has bestowed, this human body. They think, lowly of Him, by regarding Him, as a common earthbound man, and attaching importance to mundane prosperity and pleasure.

**Appendix**—In this verse the Lord's glory has been described specially. There is no greater lord than God, He is the 'Supreme' (superior to all). But the ignorant don't know Him in His true nature. They instead of regarding Him as unworldly (superhuman) regard Him as a worldly common man.

Some people hold that Lord Kṛṣṇa was not God, but He was a yogi. There are eight limbs of Yoga—yama (five great vows), niyama (canons of conduct), āsana (posture), prāṇāyāma (restraint of breath), pratyāhāra (withdraw of the senses), dhāraṇā (concentration), dhyāna (meditation) and samādhi (trance)

* Here the term 'Mām' has been used for the same Lord (God) Who has been described from the fourth verse to the tenth verse of this chapter.

(Yogadarśana 2/29). Out of these eight, the first one is Yama. Yamas are five—ahiṁsā (non-violence), truthfulness, continence, non-stealing and non-acquisition (Yogadarśana 2/30). Therefore he who is a yogī, will certainly follow 'Yamas' viz., he will speak the truth only. If he tells a lie he can't be a yogī because he has not even observed the first rule 'Yama' of Yoga. In the Gītā Lord Kṛṣṇa has called Himself several times the Lord (Īśvara).* Therefore if He is a Yogī, then He speaks the truth and if He speaks the truth, then He is God in full (entirety)—this will have to be accepted.

*Link:—In the next verse, the Lord describes the ways of those fools, who are not able to understand the Divinity, in the Incarnation, of the Lord.*

(9.146) जैसे — नक्षत्र के प्रतिबिम्ब में रत्न-बुद्धि रखा आशा-पूर्वक जल में घुसने से हंस का घात हो जाता है;

(9.156) मुझ अनामक का नाम रख देते हैं, मुझ अक्रिय को कर्म में लगा देते हैं, और मुझ विदेह को उत्पत्ति इत्यादि देह-कर्म लगा देते हैं;

(9.157) मुझ निराकार का आकार मान लेते हैं, उपाधि-रहित को सुख-साहित्य अपर्ण करते हैं और मैं जो कर्तव्य तथा अकर्तव्य से रहित, उसे व्यवहार, आचार इत्यादि लगा देते हैं;

(9.159) मैं जो मापा नहीं जा सकता उसका माप करते हैं, और जो मैं सर्वगत हूँ उसे एकदेशीय बना देते हैं। जैसे शय्या पर सोया हुआ पुरुष स्वप्न में अरण्य देखता है, (9.160) वैसे ही वे मुझ श्रवण-रहित को कान, नयन-रहित को नेत्र, गोत्र-रहित को गोत्र और अरूप को रूप देते हैं;

(9.161) अप्रकट को प्रकट करते हैं; अट्ठाखी को दुःखी की और आत्मतृप्त के लिए तृप्ति की भावना करते हैं;

(9.163) मुझ अनाच्छादित पर आच्छादन मानते हैं, मैं जो अलंकारों से परे हूँ, उसे भूषण पहनाते हैं, और मैं जो सबका कारण हूँ उसका भी कोई कारण मानते हैं;

(9.163) मैं जो स्वयं हूँ उसकी मूर्ति बनाते हैं, मैं जो सदा सिद्ध हूँ उसकी प्रतिष्ठा करते हैं, और मैं जो निरन्तर बना हुआ हूँ उसका आवाहन और विसर्जन करते हैं;

(9.164) सर्वदा स्वयंसिद्ध रहनेवाले मुझ एकरूप में बाल, तरुण, वृद्ध आदि सम्बन्ध जोड़ देते हैं;

(9.165) मुझ अद्वैत को द्वैत समझते हैं; मुझ अकर्ता को कर्ता और अभोक्ता को भोग लेनेहारा समझते हैं;
