“In the form of fire and the sun it is I alone that send out heat. I alone am both that by which the world lives and dies. Why say more? I am being and non-being.” —Being is that which exists in the present time. Non-being is that which existed in the past and that which may exist in the future, but does not exist at the present moment.

The gist is that, “I alone am existent, all the entities exist as My self-expression; all sentient and insentient beings existing in all states, constitute My corporeal manifestation. In this way, they (the wise) adore Me, contemplating upon My essential unity with the entire universe distinguished by names and forms and characterised by varied pluralities —all the diversities being only modalities of My self-expression.”

Thus, after illustrating the character of the noble-minded whose only enjoyment consists of the experience of the Lord, and in order to emphasise their greatness, Śrī Krishna describes the behaviour of ignorant men who are enrapt by the objects of desire.

On verses 9.16–9.19

“प्रतिंत विज्ञानमाह - अहं कृतुः इत्यादिना | कृतवोऽग्निष्टोमादयः | यज्ञो देवतामुद्दिश्य द्रव्यत्यागः - उद्दिश्य दामां द्रव्याणां त्यागो यज्ञ इतीरितः इत्यभिधानात् ||” - The wisdom previously spoken is again reiterated here. Ritual means sacrifices like agnishtoma etc. Sacrifice means renunciation of wealth etc. at the feet of the Lord. “It is also been said that in reference to the Lord the renunciation of wealth etc. is Sacrifice”.

“गम्यते मुमुक्षिभिः, इति गतिः | तथाहि सामवेदेषु वासिष्ठशाखायाम् - अथ कस्मादुच्यते गतिरिति | ब्रह्मैव गतिस्तद्वि गम्यते पापमुक्तैः || इति |” - Since He is the ultimate knowable, he is the goal. In that manner also in the Vashishtha section of the Samaveda: “... why is He said to be the Goal ? Because Brahman, verily, is the Goal. Since He is knowable by those who are freed from demerits”.

He is saakshi. He sees all this with His own eyes. Since He sees thus, He is known as saakshi. For the liberated, He is the shelter and also for those who are worried, thus in Bashkala Section of Rigveda. Supreme as well as the shelter to the liberated. At the time of dissolution, the entire universe becomes established in Him. Therefore he is the resting place. Having pure Vision, I saw the entire universe being established by Maya (the power of Illusion) in the Supreme Being.

“सत् कार्यम् | असत् कारणम् - सदभिव्यक्तरूपत्वात् कार्यमित्युच्यते बुधैः | असदव्यक्तरूपत्वात् कारणं च चापि शुद्धितम् || इति ह्यभिधानात् || असच्च सच्चैवध च यद् विश्वं सदसतः परम् | इति च भारते |” - सत् Existence is Action and असत् non-Existence is the Caused, the consequence. Existence is not evident in the beginning (becoming evident on manifestation, therefore,) the wise call it, the Action, non-Existence being the un-manifested form (of the manifested form) is called the Caused, the consequence, thus has it been explained. This verily, is made up of both सत् Existence and असत् non-Existence. Such is the universe. Both सत् Existence and असत् non-Existence are superior (to this Universe), thus in Bharata

On verses 9.16–9.19

“अर्च्यत्वादृक् समत्वाच्च निजरूपेषु साम सः | याज्यत्वात् स यजुयज्ञः सर्वज्ञात् पुरुषोत्तमः || कृतुः कृतिस्वपत्वात् स्वधाऽनन्यधृतो यतः | मानात् व्रातीति मनोऽयमुष्टानां निधिरीपधम् || आ ज्यायस्त्वादाज्यनामा दर्भो दरधरो यतः | आहूतत्वादभुतं चायमग्निर्नताऽगतेर्यतः || इत्यादि च |” - Since He is propitiated by all, He is ritual. Since all his forms are similar, He is साम. Since he is the object of sacrifice from all, He is यजुस. Being the knower of an sacrifices, He is यज्ञ or offerings. Since He is the motivator in universe, He is कृतुः the rituals. Since he is not supported by none other than Himself, He is स्वधा offerings to the ancestors. Since he is meditated upon, He is मन्त्र the Vedic chants. Since He is solace to the afflicted, He is ओषधी. Since He is superior, He is आज्य the first offering of ghee. Since He is दर, the holder of the conch. Since He is himself the oblation in the sacrifices, He is आहुति. Since He is the energizer of the earth, He is अग्नि.

“तत्त्वपदार्थभिन्नोऽपि तत्त्वन्मैवमच्युतः | स्वातन्त्र्यात् सर्वकर्तृत्वात् गुणानन्त्याच्च केवलम् | इति च | ओमित्याक्रियते यस्मादोकारो भगवान् परः || इति च | पातीति स पिता मानान्माता यत् स पितुर्महान् | पितामहो निधातृत्वान्निधानं भीरक्षणात् शरणं व्यञ्जनाच्चैव बीजमित्युच्यते प्रभुः || इति च | प्रलयकाले संहर्तृत्वात् प्रलयः | अन्यदाऽपीति मृदुः - प्राणगः प्राणधर्ता यदभृतं प्रविलापयन् | विश्वं प्रलय इत्युक्तो मृत्युरन्यत्र मारणात् || इति च | सत् साधुगुणपूर्णत्वादस्मान्नानो गुणाधिकः | यतोऽतोऽसदिति प्रोक्तं विष्ण्वाख्यं परमं पदम् || इति शब्दनिर्णये ||” - The Lord being Independent by Himself, is different from all the above things and yet inseparable from them. Being their essence, He is known by those things. Since He is referred to as ॐ in the sacrifices Sri Hari is ॐकार. He patronizes, therefore, He is the father; understands child's needs, therefore, the mother. Since He is superior to father of the creation (Prajapati Brahma) He is grandsire. Since He is the ultimate abode of the world, He is foundation. Since He shields the frightened, He is the refuge. Since He is the cause for the worlds, He is the seed, thus, the Lord is referred. Since at the time of dissolution, he destroys all, He is dissolution and on other occasions, He is the death. Since in normal times abiding in the body sustains life and distancing death, He is known as Immortal. In times of dissolution since he exterminates all, He is known as Death. Since He is known as Sri Vishnu, full of auspicious attributes, He is Sat. Since there is nothing else than Him, He is a-Sat as well. Thus, according to Shabda Nimaya.

19 "I give heat, I hold back the shower and pour it forth; I am Immortality as well as Death; I am the Being as well as Non-being, O Arjuna. (296)

When I glow in the guise of the Sun, the world dries up, and when I descend playing the roll of Indra, it is flooded. Fire consumes fuel, which in its turn changes into fire; thus both what is killed and that which kills are of My essence; and therefore, whatever lies within mortal nature is My outward appearance, while that which is immortal is certainly My being. To cut the long story short, I can give it in a nut-shell that 'Sat' and 'Asat' (सत्-असत्—real and unreal) both are all My Being. Therefore, Oh Arjuna is there any nook and corner anywhere in which I am not? And yet how pitiable is human lot indeed that these creatures fail to see Me in the world! See how astonishing it is that they are of My own being and yet they fall into the error of saying that I am not, as if waves should dry up saying, there is no water, or rays of the sun be invisible without a candlelight. The whole world, inside and outside, is full of My divine being and yet how cruel is fate that blinds mortals into saying that I am not! This is just like one falling into a well of ambrosia and wishing himself to be taken out of it! Such an unfortunate one is simply to be pitied. It is as if a blind man running hurriedly for a morsel of food, Oh Kirīti, should stumble on the Chintāmaṇi (wish-fulfilling stone) and kick it out of his way in his blindness. Such indeed is the lot of mortals when wisdom leaves them. Therefore, an action done without knowledge is no action worth the name. Of what avail are the wings to a blind eagle? Just so, actions, even if they are good actions, become vain and wasteful efforts, when not backed up by insight and wisdom.

'Tapāmyahamahaṁ varṣaṁ nigṛhṇāmyutsṛjāmi ca'—The Lord, in the form of the sun, cures ailments of beings, by drying impure and dirty materials, which cause ailments, on the earth. As the sun, the Lord radiates heat to dry the poisonous matter of medicinal herbs and other vegetations. He dries water, to make it pure and sweet, and then sends it back as rain, for the welfare of beings.

'Amṛtaṁ caiva mṛtyuśca sadasaccāhamarjuna'—The Lord, is immortality, as well as, death. He is immortality—it means that all beings live by sustaining their life-breath, (they do not die). He is death, as it means the departure of life-breath from the body, of all beings (their death). He is being, as well as non-being, the cause as well as, effect. It means, that as a great soul regards that, all is God, in the view of the Lord also, He is all, though a common man views death and immortality, being and non-being; gross and subtle, sattva, rajas and tamas; cause and effect; water and ice etc., different. But, in fact, the world is a manifestation of the Lord. As in clothes made of yarn, there is nothing besides yarn, in so too things, actions, incidents, circumstances and men etc., there is nothing else, besides God.

Appendix—God existed before the creation of the universe and in the end God will remain, then in the mid-state who else can be there besides God? Therefore immortality is a form of God and death is also a form of God. The real (parā prakṛti)

is a form of God and the unreal (aparā prakṛti) is also a form of God. As the food offered to God becomes 'prasād' (a gift or blessing) from God and it includes both sweet food such as 'rasagullā' and 'gulābajāmuna' and also bitter vegetables such as 'karelā' (bitter gourd) and 'methi'. Similarly the favourable as well as unfavourable circumstances—all are the manifestations of God. The Lord as the sun withholds water and then sends forth rain—these two opposite activities (withholding and sending back) are performed by God. Not only this but the water which is withheld is God, the rain which is sent forth is God and the action of raining is also God. 'Sadasaccāhamarjuna'—In the entire universe there is nothing besides 'sat' (parā) viz., the real and 'asat' (aparā) viz., the unreal. The world is unreal and the Lord Who resides in it, is real. The body is unreal and the soul which resides in it, is real. The body and the world are kaleidoscopic while the soul and God are free from modifications. The body and world are perishable, while the soul and God are imperishable (Gītā 2/12). The Lord declares that He is changeable and is also unchangeable, He is perishable and is also imperishable. It means that all is God, there is nothing else besides God (Gītā 7/7).

In 'nāsato vidyate bhāvo, nābhāvo vidyate satah' while differentiating 'Sat' from 'Asat' there is discrimination but in 'sadasaccāham' there is no need of any discrimination but there is faith (belief) required. All is God—this belief is more powerful than discrimination. The reason is that discrimination is useful when both the real and the unreal are distinguished. But when the unreal does not exist at all, then what is the use of discrimination? If we assume the entity of the unreal, then there is need for discrimination; but if we don't assume the entity of the unreal, then there is belief. In discrimination there is division between the real and the unreal but in belief or faith all being God there is no division at all. In faith there is only the real viz., only God.

In the Discipline of knowledge, there is predominance of discrimination while in the Discipline of Devotion, there is predominance of belief and love (devotion). In the Discipline of knowledge, discrimination between the real and the unreal, the self and the non-self, the eternal and the transient is important; so there is duality—'dvaita', but in the Discipline of Devotion, belief in God is important, so there is non-dualism—'advaita'. It means that in fact there is real non-dualism in devotion as there are no two entities.

In the Discipline of Knowledge a striver negates the unreal. By negation, the entity of the unreal can persist. The more emphasis a striver lays on the negation of the unreal, the more the assumption of the entity of the unreal is strengthened. Therefore 'to negate the unreal', is not so good as is 'to be indifferent to it'. Better than indifference to it is the notion—'all is God'. Therefore a devotee neither negates the unreal nor is indifferent to it, but he beholds God in all—the real and the unreal because in fact all is God.

The Lord declares—

**ahamevāsamevāgre nānyad yat sadasat param paścāduham yudetuccu yo'vasīṣyet so'smyaham**

(Śrīmadbhā. 2/9/32)

'Before the creation I was present, there was nothing else besides Me and after the creation whatever this world appears, I am also that. The real, the unreal and that which can be beyond both the real and the unreal, I am that also, and when the creation is destroyed, whatever remains, I am also that.'

The body, senses, mind, intellect and ego etc., all is God. For example if we think of Haridwāra (with the mind), the mind appears as the immovable objects such as 'Hari kī paīḍī' and the clock tower etc., and the mind appears as the movable objects such as the Ganges, the sailing fish and the bathing persons, viz., the mind became both—the movable and the immovable objects.

Similarly the real is God and the unreal is also God.

From our point of view there are two divisions—the real and the unreal, therefore the Lord has used the expression—'sadasa ccāham' in order to explain it to us, otherwise from the Lord's point of view, there is nothing else besides Him. If we perceive even from the topmost philosophical point of view, we find that there is only one entity. Two entities are not possible at all. A man is deluded when he accepts the other entity (Gītā 7/13). Attachment and aversion also ensue by assuming (accepting) the other entity.

Link:—After describing, the ways of fools and devotees, now in the next two verses, the Lord, describes the ways of enjoyment-seekers, who having a disinclination for God, perform sacrifice etc., to reap their fruit. Therefore, they repeatedly come and go.
