Previously in verse eight Lord Krishna revealed that He is the Supreme Absolute Truth, the Ultimate Reality and the cause and origin of all.

Now He is being requested to elaborate in more detail and supply further facts about His vibhūti or Supreme transcendental perfection and His Supreme yoga, in regard to His Supreme rulership throughout all creation.

Arjuna confesses that listening to His unparalleled instructions is exactly like ambrosial nectar and he is never satiated by it.

18 “In detail Thy Yoga (Wondrous Power) and Thy self-manifestation, O World-destroyer, once again do Thou recount: for, never am I sated whilst I am listening to Thy ambrosial (speech).” (190) Oh (Master of the entire class of beings), do tell me all the emanations which I ask Thee (about); and pray do not hesitate and say “Why tell them over and over again”,? Let not such doubts touch Thy mind, Oh Janārdana. None can be glutted even with the usual drink—beloved of God—that nectar which is a twin of the all-devouring-poison (Kālakuta)—that nectar which was drunk by the Gods for fear of very death; and yet as many as 14 Indras rise and fall from that seat of immortality during the time span of the creator’s day. A mere extract churned out of the sea of milk, it deluded mortal men into the belief that it is the giver of immortality. Even such a sweet taste—a trivial drink cannot clog any one, and is held in such high esteem. What a glorious drink then is Thy sacred Words? It is verily super-nectarine. It is of eternity, self-existent and self-same, and not made by churning of the sea of milk with the churning rod ‘Mandaragiri’ mountain. It is neither thin nor thick; it is without any taste or smell and is one which is within easy reach of any one who yearns for it. No sooner does Thy sweet word meet the ear, than the entire worldly life vanishes like an empty dream and the soul ever grows from strength to strength of its deathless eternal life; of the talk of birth and death, no trace remains; and the supreme bliss of self-realization reigns, in and out. And any one who by good luck drinks in that super-nectar of Thy word, he is thereby raised to the Divine Being itself. It is no wonder then that I cannot take it to satiety when Thou art the giver of it. By the love of Thy dearest name, have I lived all my days. So at last did I find Thee and live in Thy very presence; and now Thy talk is a flow of soul out of the ecstasy of bliss. I know not words befitting this great joy that is beyond compare; I am thus eagerly yearning to hear the same words from Thee over again. Is the Sun that rises every day ever stale, or otherwise the worse for age? Can any one treat the all-purifying fire as unholy or befouled? Or can any one dub the ever-flowing holy Ganges as unwashed and musty? The supreme nectar (of words) which has been flowing from Thy mouth, is the very Absolute Brahman Word, made flesh and blood, and bodying forth; and I feel as if I am enjoying the fragrance of the flower of the sandal tree!” At these words of Arjuna, Lord Krishna’s body began to quiver with joy of divine ecstasy. Said he to himself “This Arjuna has become a true nursery for the plant of God’s devotional knowledge.” Thus Lord Krishna’s mind was full to overflowing with the joy of divine vision at sight of the great love felt by Arjuna. The Lord checked that feeling and spoke thus:

English

'Vistareṇātmano yogam vibhūtim ca janārdana'—Lord Kṛṣṇa, explained the topic of knowledge (Wisdom) with realization, in the seventh and the ninth chapters, in detail, but He was not satisfied. So He Himself started the topic again, in the tenth chapter, by asking Arjuna to listen to His supreme word. Arjuna's attention was drawn particularly towards the Lord's grace, and His glories. So he requests Him to tell him further in detail, of His glories and His power of Yoga, so that he may be endowed, with unfaltering devotion to Him

'Bhūyaḥ kathaya trptirhi śrṇvato nāsti me'mṛtam'—Arjuna wants to know what is decidedly good for him (Gītā 2/7; 3/2; 5/1)

and Lord Kṛṣṇa has declared, that he who knows in reality, His divine glory and power, is endowed with unfaltering devotion (Gītā 10/7). So Arjuna thinks, that it is an easy means, to be endowed with unfaltering devotion, by knowing of His divine glories, so that, unfaltering devotion will lead him to salvation. Then he requests Him to advise him of His divine glories in detail once again.

As a person, while taking a meal requests for a tasty dish, again and again, while taking meals the taste suffers either owing to not getting the food in plenty or on stomach being full, but such is not the case in divine glories as they are infinite and there is no satiety while hearing them. Arjuna wants to listen to the Lord's nectarean words again, because His glories are numberless and Arjuna knows no satiety, in hearing them.

**Appendix**—As a hungry man relishes food and a thirsty man relishes water, similarly the Lord's utterances seem very extraordinary to inquisitive Arjuna. The more extraordinary the Lord's utterances appear to Arjuna, the more devotional feelings are welling up (aroused) in him for the Lord.*

(10.195) जो बिना ही मन्दराचल को हिलाये, और बिना ही क्षीरसमुद्र को मथे, स्वभावतः अनादि काल से उपस्थित है;

(10.196) जो न बहता है, न गलता है, न जमता है; जिस में न रस न सुगन्ध दिखाई देती है, और जो नित्यसिद्ध है, - चाहे जिसे स्मरण से ही प्राप्त हो सकता है;

(10.197) जिसका वर्णन सुनते ही संसार मिथ्या हो जाता है, निज को जबरदस्ती नित्यता प्राप्त होने लगती है, (10.198) जन्म-मृत्यु की वार्ता बिलकुल ही मिट जाती है, और अन्तर्बाह्य महासुख की वृद्धि होने लगती है;

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
