Daivāsura Sampad Vibhāga Yoga · The Yoga of the Division between the Divine and the Demoniac

श्री भगवानुवाच

अभयं सत्त्वसंशुद्धिः ज्ञानयोगव्यवस्थितिः

दानं दमश्च यज्ञश्च स्वाध्यायस्तप आर्जवम्

śrī bhagavānuvāca

abhayaṃ sattvasaṃśuddhiḥ jñānayogavyavasthitiḥ|

dānaṃ damaśca yajñaśca svādhyāyastapa ārjavam||

Absolute fearlessness, perfect purity of mind; i; constant fixity in the Yoga of eg, for; thesake of Self-Realization, and even socharity in its Sattvika form, control of the senses worship of god and other deities as well as of one’s elders including the performance of Agnihotra (pouring oblations into the sacred fire) and other sacred duties, study and teaching: of the Vedas and other sacred books as well as the chanting of God’s names and praises, suffering j hardships for the discharge of one’s sacred obligations and straightness of mind as well y as of the body and senses

अहिंसा सत्यमक्रोधस्त्यागः शान्तिरपैशुनम्

दया भूतेष्वलोलुप्त्वं मार्दवं ह्रीरचापलम्

ahiṃsā satyamakrodhastyāgaḥ śāntirapaiśunam|dayā bhūteṣvaloluptvaṃ mārdavaṃ hrīracāpalam||

Non-violence in thought, word and deed, of truthfulness and geniality of speech, absence of anger even on provocation, disclaiming doership in respect of actions, quietude or composure of mind, abstainingfrommalicious gossip compassion towardsallcreatures,absence ~ of attachment to the objects of senses even during their contact with the senses, mildness, — asense of shame in transgressing against the a seriptures or usage, and abstaining from frivolous 0) pursuits

तेजः क्षमा धृतिः शौचमद्रोहो नातिमानिता

भवन्ति सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातस्य भारत

tejaḥ kṣamā dhṛtiḥ śaucamadroho nātimānitā|

bhavanti sampadaṃ daivīmabhijātasya bhārata||

Sublimity, forbearance, fortitude,external ~ purity, bearing enmity tonone and absence of: self-esteem—these are the marks of him, who is born with the divine gifts Arjuna. (3) i

दम्भो दर्पोऽभिमानश्च क्रोधः पारुष्यमेव च

अज्ञानं चाभिजातस्य पार्थ सम्पदमासुरीम्

dambho darpo'bhimānaśca krodhaḥ pāruṣyameva ca|ajñānaṃ cābhijātasya pārtha sampadamāsurīm||

Hypocrisy, arrogance and pride, and anger,) sternness and igorance too,—these are marks y of him, who is born with demoniac properties. (4) yh

दैवी सम्पद्विमोक्षाय निबन्धायासुरी मता

मा शुचः सम्पदं दैवीमभिजातोऽसि पाण्डव

daivī sampadvimokṣāya nibandhāyāsurī matā|mā śucaḥ sampadaṃ daivīmabhijāto'si pāṇḍava||

The divine gift has been recognized as: conducive to liberation, and the demoniac! gift as conducive to bondage; Grieve not Arjuna; for you are born with the divine a endowment

द्वौ भूतसर्गौ लोकेऽस्मिन् दैव आसुर एव च

दैवो विस्तरशः प्रोक्त आसुरं पार्थ मे श्रृणु

dvau bhūtasargau loke'smin daiva āsura eva ca|daivo vistaraśaḥ prokta āsuraṃ pārtha me śrṛṇu||

There are only two types of men in this world, Arjuna,—the one possessing a divine nature and the other possessing ademoniac disposition. Of these, the type possessing a divine nature has been dealt with at length; now hear in detail from Me about the type possessing demoniac disposition

प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः

न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते

pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca janā na vidurāsurāḥ|na śaucaṃ nāpi cācāro na satyaṃ teṣu vidyate||

Men possessing a demoniac disposition know J not what is right activity and what is right abstinence from activity. Hence they possess neither purity (external or internal) nor good conduct nor even truthfulness. C7) 5 ti

असत्यमप्रतिष्ठं ते जगदाहुरनीश्वरम्

अपरस्परसम्भूतं किमन्यत्कामहैतुकम्

asatyamapratiṣṭhaṃ te jagadāhuranīśvaram|aparasparasambhūtaṃ kimanyatkāmahaitukam||

Men possessing a demoniac disposition sa y Z ea world is without any foundation, absolutely unreal and godless, brought forth by mutual union of the male andfemale and henceconceived in lust; what else than this? (8) iN

एतां दृष्टिमवष्टभ्य नष्टात्मानोऽल्पबुद्धयः

प्रभवन्त्युग्रकर्माणः क्षयाय जगतोऽहिताः

etāṃ dṛṣṭimavaṣṭabhya naṣṭātmāno'lpabuddhayaḥ|prabhavantyugrakarmāṇaḥ kṣayāya jagato'hitāḥ||

Clinging to this false view these slow-witted men of a vile disposition and terrible deeds, K these enemies of mankind; prove equal only ~ to the destruction of the universe. (9) S

काममाश्रित्य दुष्पूरं दम्भमानमदान्विताः

मोहाद्गृहीत्वासद्ग्राहान्प्रवर्तन्तेऽशुचिव्रताः

kāmamāśritya duṣpūraṃ dambhamānamadānvitāḥ|mohādgṛhītvāsadgrāhānpravartante'śucivratāḥ||

Cherishing insatiable desires and embracing false doctrines through ignorance, these men of impure conduct move in this world, full of; hypocrisy, pride and arrogance

चिन्तामपरिमेयां च प्रलयान्तामुपाश्रिताः

कामोपभोगपरमा एतावदिति निश्िचताः

cintāmaparimeyāṃ ca pralayāntāmupāśritāḥ|kāmopabhogaparamā etāvaditi niśicatāḥ||

Giving themselves up to innumerable cares ending only with death, they remain devoted to the enjoyment of sensuous pleasures and are positive in their belief that this is the highest limit of joy.

आशापाशशतैर्बद्धाः कामक्रोधपरायणाः

ईहन्ते कामभोगार्थमन्यायेनार्थसञ्चयान्

āśāpāśaśatairbaddhāḥ kāmakrodhaparāyaṇāḥ|īhante kāmabhogārthamanyāyenārthasañcayān||

Held in bondage by hundreds of ties of expectation and wholly giving themselves up / to lust and anger, they strive to amass by: unfairmear hoards of money and other objcts for the enjoyment of sensuous pleasures. (l

इदमद्य मया लब्धमिमं प्राप्स्ये मनोरथम्

इदमस्तीदमपि मे भविष्यति पुनर्धनम्

idamadya mayā labdhamimaṃ prāpsye manoratham|idamastīdamapi me bhaviṣyati punardhanam||

They say to themselves, This much has been secured by me today and now I shall realize this ambition. So much wealth is already with me and yet again this shall be

असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि

ईश्वरोऽहमहं भोगी सिद्धोऽहं बलवान्सुखी

asau mayā hataḥ śatrurhaniṣye cāparānapi|īśvaro'hamahaṃ bhogī siddho'haṃ balavānsukhī||

That enemy has been slain by me and I / shall kill those others too. I am the Lord of (& all, the enjoyer of all power; I am endowed — with allsupernatural powers,andam mighty and happy

आढ्योऽभिजनवानस्मि कोऽन्योऽस्ति सदृशो मया

यक्ष्ये दास्यामि मोदिष्य इत्यज्ञानविमोहिताः

āḍhyo'bhijanavānasmi ko'nyo'sti sadṛśo mayā|yakṣye dāsyāmi modiṣya ityajñānavimohitāḥ||

I am wealthy and own a large family; who else is like unto me? I will sacrifice to gods, I will give alms, I will make merry, Thus blinded PRE SF Se EI OTE LONI AE by ignorance, enveloped in the mesh of delusion and addicted to the enjoyment of sensuous pleasures, their mind bewildered by numberous thoughts, these men of a devilish disposition fall into the foulest hell. (5,6)

अनेकचित्तविभ्रान्ता मोहजालसमावृताः

प्रसक्ताः कामभोगेषु पतन्ति नरकेऽशुचौ

anekacittavibhrāntā mohajālasamāvṛtāḥ|prasaktāḥ kāmabhogeṣu patanti narake'śucau||

I am wealthy and own a large family; who else is like unto me? I will sacrifice to gods, I will give alms, I will make merry. Thus blinded by ignorance, enveloped in the mesh of delusion and addicted to the enjoyment of sensuous pleasures, their mind bewildered by numerous thoughts, these men of a devilish disposition fall into the foulest hell.

verses 15–16

आत्मसम्भाविताः स्तब्धा धनमानमदान्विताः

यजन्ते नामयज्ञैस्ते दम्भेनाविधिपूर्वकम्

ātmasambhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhanamānamadānvitāḥ|yajante nāmayajñaiste dambhenāvidhipūrvakam||

Intoxicated by wealth and honour, those self-conceited and haughty men worship God through nominal sacrifices for ostentation without following the sacred rituals.

अहङ्कारं बलं दर्पं कामं क्रोधं च संश्रिताः

मामात्मपरदेहेषु प्रद्विषन्तोऽभ्यसूयकाः

ahaṅkāraṃ balaṃ darpaṃ kāmaṃ krodhaṃ ca saṃśritāḥ|māmātmaparadeheṣu pradviṣanto'bhyasūyakāḥ||

Given over to egotism, brute force, arrogance,: lust and anger etc. and culminating others, they hate Me (the inner controller of all) dwelling in their own bodies as well as in those of others. (i

तानहं द्विषतः क्रूरान्संसारेषु नराधमान्

क्षिपाम्यजस्रमशुभानासुरीष्वेव योनिषु

tānahaṃ dviṣataḥ krūrānsaṃsāreṣu narādhamān|kṣipāmyajasramaśubhānāsurīṣveva yoniṣu||

These haters, sinful, cruel and vilest among men, I cast again and again into demoniacal wombs in this world. (i

आसुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनि जन्मनि

मामप्राप्यैव कौन्तेय ततो यान्त्यधमां गतिम्

āsurīṃ yonimāpannā mūḍhā janmani janmani|

māmaprāpyaiva kaunteya tato yāntyadhamāṃ gatim||

Failing to reach Me, Arjun, these stupid souls are born life after life in demoniac wombs and then verily sink down to a still lower » plane

त्रिविधं नरकस्येदं द्वारं नाशनमात्मनः

कामः क्रोधस्तथा लोभस्तस्मादेतत्त्रयं त्यजेत्

trividhaṃ narakasyedaṃ dvāraṃ nāśanamātmanaḥ|kāmaḥ krodhastathā lobhastasmādetattrayaṃ tyajet||

Desire, anger and greed— this triple gate of hell brings about the ruination of the soul. Therefore, one should, avoid all these; three

एतैर्विमुक्तः कौन्तेय तमोद्वारैस्त्रिभिर्नरः

आचरत्यात्मनः श्रेयस्ततो याति परां गतिम्

etairvimuktaḥ kaunteya tamodvāraistribhirnaraḥ|ācaratyātmanaḥ śreyastato yāti parāṃ gatim||

Freed from these three gates of hell, man works his own salvation and thereby attains the supreme goal i.e., God

यः शास्त्रविधिमुत्सृज्य वर्तते कामकारतः

न स सिद्धिमवाप्नोति न सुखं न परां गतिम्

yaḥ śāstravidhimutsṛjya vartate kāmakārataḥ|na sa siddhimavāpnoti na sukhaṃ na parāṃ gatim||

Having cast aside the injunctions of the seriptures, he who acts in an arbitrary way: according to his own sweet will neither attains: perfection nor the supreme goal nor even happiness. (23) SE oe OE Oe EP ne

तस्माच्छास्त्रं प्रमाणं ते कार्याकार्यव्यवस्थितौ

ज्ञात्वा शास्त्रविधानोक्तं कर्म कर्तुमिहार्हसि

tasmācchāstraṃ pramāṇaṃ te kāryākāryavyavasthitau|jñātvā śāstravidhānoktaṃ karma kartumihārhasi||

Therefore, the scripture alone is your guide in determining what should be done and what should not be done. Knowing this, you ought to perform only such action as is ordained by the scriptures
