Now in this chapter the Lord Krishna propounds how the guṇas or three modes:

1. sattva guṇa or mode of goodness, 2. raja guṇa or mode of passion and 3. tama guṇa or mode of ignorance

- all individually and conjointly cause the jīva or embodied being to be bound to samsāra, the perpetual cycle of birth and death and gives the remedy by which one may be redeemed and delivered therefrom.

The word pravakṣyāmi means I will declare. What will Lord Krishna declare?

He will declare jñānānāṃ jñānam uttamam, meaning the topmost knowledge and wisdom.

What knowledge and wisdom is this?

Knowledge of the three guṇas whose qualities directly influence the combination of prakṛti and Puruṣa effected as the jīva or embodied being.

What wisdom is this? Wisdom that surpasses all that has previously been told about this combination.

The munis are the great sages and seers or munayaḥ who possessing this wisdom in deep meditation achieve self-realisation and release from samsāra, ascending to the supreme state.

The excellence of this wisdom is extolled next.

She separately exists as Sri, Bhu, Durga etc. Uma, Saraswati and other Jivas are her partial manifestations. “Sri, Bhu, Durga are the three forms of illusion that bind Jivas and the World. Uma, Vac (Saraswati) and others even though distinct Jivas, since they partial manifestation of Sri in Agama, they are also known as Sri” thus in Kashayana scripture. मम योनि means not the mother, but the feminine sakti existing to accept the seed of consciousness from the Supreme Lord and give birth to all life forms. “For giving birth by Sri Vishnu Sri Lakshmi, the great Maya, is devoid of all miseries. But along with Sri Vishnu she displays as if she is in misery for deluding the ignoble people”, thus in Sharkarakshya section of Samaveda. An examples is the sorrow of Sita which is merely a performance. “Bhu is distinct and the Earth is but her reflection. Even though she (the earth) is the last among the five elements, she is the origin of all the elements”, thus in Sankaryana scripture. “She accepted servitude willingly even though she is the grandmother of all the worlds”, thus in Anabhimaan Shruti. “Both Prakriti and the great Lord are both known as mahad Brahma”, even thus in Matsya Puraana.

“योनिर्भायां तथा स्थानं योनिः कारणमेव च | इति शब्दनिर्णये || अत्र योनिर्भायां - तस्मिन् गर्भं दधाम्यहम् || इति वाक्यशेषात् ||” – There are three meanings for the word योनिः - wife, female generative organ and the cause. Here योनिः means wife, because special use in the sentence – ‘in that womb I give birth’.

1 “Once again, of knowledges the supreme and the most excellent Knowledge shall I expound, by knowing which the Sages have all reached hence the Highest Perfection. (41)

Therefore, I shall again tell you next about what Shruti Scriptures have repeatedly proclaimed as ‘para (पर—Highest). In fact this knowledge is our own, yet, it becomes ‘para’ (पर—Beyond—foreign) to us, because of our having taken a liking for this world as also for the heavens. Oh, it is for this reason that I call it best in its entirety, since this knowledge is like fire (burning others) while others (types of knowledge) are like straw (before it), since they recognise as real only this world as also the heavens and further say that the sacrifices etc. alone are good and consider duality to be real through distinctions. All other types of knowledge prove to be dreams (unsubstantial) before this knowledge. Just as the wind is ultimately dissolved in the sky, or just as, with the rising of the Sun in the sky, the brilliance of the Moon and the other stars gets dimmed, or just as all the rivers, big and small, get merged in the waters of the deluge at the time of world-dissolution, in that way with the rise of this knowledge, other types of knowledge get extinguished, and therefore, Oh Dhananjaya, this (knowledge) is the best. That originless, emancipated and pristine state of ours, Oh Son of Pāndu, that state called the 'complete deliverance' is attained through this knowledge. With the realization of this knowledge, thoughtful persons do not allow the mundane existence even to raise its head. Those that have secured rest through the restraint of the mind—such persons even though in the body-form, do not get under the sway of the body. Then they cross over once for all the body-hedge and come up to the same level as myself with the perfect balancing (of the mind).

'Paraṁ bhūyaḥ pravakṣyāmi jñānānām jñānamuttamam'—The

expression 'Bhūyaḥ pravaksyāmi', denotes the Lord's declaration to explain the knowledge (Jñāna) (discrimination) of Kṣetra and Kṣetrajña, prakṛti (Matter) and Puruṣa (Spirit), as described in the eighteenth, twenty-third and thirty-fourth verses of the thirteenth chapter.

This wisdom (Jñāna) is the supreme of all other knowledge—spiritual as well as mundane, of arts, sciences, languages and scripts etc., because other knowledge leads to bondage, while it leads to God-realization. Here, the Lord has used, two terms 'Uttama' and 'Para', which mean the same 'Supreme' or 'the best'. The term 'Uttama' (best) denotes that this knowledge is the best, as it is conducive to renunciation of connection between the body and the world, while the term 'Para' (Supreme) denotes that this knowledge, tends to God-realization.

**'Yajñātvā munayāḥ sarve parāṁ siddhimito gatāḥ'**—By knowing, i.e., realizing that supreme wisdom all great sages who attained God-realization, and being liberated, from mundane existence, without any exception.

A muni (Sage), is he, who renounces his affinity, with the body. The expression, 'Parāṁ siddhim' denotes, that all the mundane perfections including the Siddhis, such as, Aṇimā, Mahimā and Garimā etc., gained, by the Yogis are merely imperfections, because all of these lead to bondage, and the cycle of birth and death and are obstacles to God-realization. The highest perfection, is God-realization because it frees a man from the cycle of birth and death.

**Appendix**—(This fourteenth chapter is an appendix to the thirteenth chapter.) This wisdom of the division between 'Kṣetra' and 'Kṣetrajña' is superior to all other earthly and unearthly wisdoms and is the Supreme. This wisdom is an unerring device for God-realization, therefore having realized this wisdom, all strivers attain God viz., are liberated from mundane existence.

'Jñānānām jñānamuttamam'—This expression means that this wisdom is superior to Sāṭvika, Rājasa and Tāmasa knowledge and also to the earthly as well as unearthly knowledge and is the Supreme. No other wisdom besides this can lead a striver to the attainment of the highest perfection. There is nothing else besides God—this realization is the attainment of the highest perfection. It means that for the man who has attained the highest perfection, actions and objects lose their existence totally and nothing remains in his view except that divine entity which really exists.
