SanskritEnglish“अज्ञानं जायते यतस्तद् अज्ञानजम् | प्रमादमोहौ तमसः | इति वाक्यशेषात् ||” - Obscurity is born of non-awareness having been pointed by the use of the words negligence, indolence and sleep.

English8 “The Tamas, however, understand as born of nescience, and *causing infatuation to all body-owners. Through heedlessness, indolence, and slumber does it fetter-down, O Scion of Bharata.* (174)
That which dims the vision of commonsense, that which is the dark cloud of the night of infatuation, that which makes one feel strong attachment for nescience and has deluded the universe and made it dance (active), that which is the great mystic formula of thoughtlessness and is a jug of the wine in the form of stupidity—nay which is a missile (in the form of) infatuation (मोहनास्त्र) for the being—all that, Oh Pārtha, is Tamas, and with its skill, it entangles the egoistic body-owner. Once it begins to grow up in all created things, there remains no scope for anyone else (to grow). It renders the organs dull, the mind foolish, and strengthens indolence. Then the being begins to turn and twist his body, feels aversion for any sort of work and then there ensues abundance of yawning. He cannot then, Oh Kīrtīti, see anything with his eyes even though (they are) open, and gets up and responds to a call even though there is actually none. A stone slab falling on one of its sides, does not move to any other; in that way, once rolled up in drowsiness he cannot unroll himself. The earth might sink low into the lower region (पाताळ) or heavens might crash down upon him, yet he does not feel like getting up. He, feeling drowsy and sleepy, cannot recollect what is proper or improper, but only feels great liking for remaining in a rolling position. He raises his palms and rests his cheeks on them, and uses his legs as supporting cushions, and he is so very fond of slumber that he considers it superior to heavenly bliss, were he to have a good slumber. He has no other addiction but that of having the longevity of God Brahmadev, and of passing it in slumber. Were he casually to rest while wending his way he feels sleepy, and were he to feel drowsy he would not wake up even for taking a sip of nectar (if it is offered to him). If on occasions he is forced to work, he gets blind with rage. He does not even know how to behave himself, and with whom to talk and what, and cannot know if a certain action is possible or impossible. Just as a moth should entertain the ambition of putting out, with the help of its wings, a wild fire, in that way he becomes prepared to run risks and audaciously puts his hand to things that could not (or should not) be done; in short he likes to do wrong (thoughtless) actions. In this way, the Tamas quality fetters the attributeless and pure soul with a bondage of triple plait in the form of slumber, indolence and wrongful actions. When fire pervades an entire piece of wood, it appears to have the shape of that piece, or the sky gets the name of Ghatākāsh (घटाकाश—earthen-pot-shaped sky), when contained (seen) in the earthen pot: or when a lake is full of water, then there appears reflected in it the Moon; in all these ways the soul appears to be modified (bound) by the semblance of the Gunas.

English'Tamastvajñānajam vidhi mohanam sarvadehinām'—Here the term 'tu' (but), has been used to denote that Tamoguna is far inferior to Sattvaguna and even, Rajoguna.
It is born of ignorance or folly, and it deludes embodied beings i.e., those, who regard the body, as their self. It enshrouds discrimination and so they cannot discriminate, between the real and the unreal; and the proper and improper. It does not allow to enjoy even Rājasika pleasure and prosperity. Then there is no question of the safety of Sāttvika happiness.
The Lord means to say, that human beings are deluded of Tamoguna, but He has used the expression 'Sarvadehinām' (all embodied beings), to denote that human beings, who lack discrimination are like other deluded beings, such as birds and beasts etc., that eat, drink, sleep and produce young-ones.
'Pramādālasyaṇidrābhiṣṭannibadhnāti bhārata'—This Tamoguna, binds embodied beings through heedlessness, indolence and sleep.
'Pramāda'—(Heedlessness), is of two kinds—(1) Heedlessness by which one does not discharge one's duty which is conducive to one's own welfare, as well as, to the welfare of others. (2) Heedlessness, by which one performs futile actions, which are of no use either to him or to others. Futile actions, can further be divided into two categories.
(i) Extravagance, on smoking, drinking and movies etc.
(ii) Playing cards and backgammon etc., shooting birds and beasts etc., and destroying plants etc.
Indolence, is also of two kinds—(1) In this state of indolence a man remains idle, sleeps more than is required and ever postpones
his work. This indolence, leads a man to bondage. (2) In the second kind of indolence, a person feels drowsy after the day's hard, mental and physical work. That sort of sleep is inevitable. This indolence is not a defect.
Sleep can also be divided into two parts—(1) Sleep which is necessary, for a healthy body and a healthy mind. It is regulated and is helpful in the practice of Yoga (Gītā 6/17). (2) Unnecessary sleep—One sleeps too much. It is a stumbling block to the practice of Yoga and so it is to be discarded (Gītā 6/16).
Thus Tamogūṇa (mode of ignorance), binds a man through heedlessness, indolence and sleep i.e., which are stumbling blocks, to his mundane and spiritual progress.
An Important fact
Sattva (mode of goodness), Rajas (mode of passion) and Tamas (mode of ignorance) bind a man (spirit). Out of the three, Sattva binds by attachment to happiness, and to knowledge, Rajas binds by attachment to actions, but in Tamas there is no need for any attachment, it automatically binds a man.
If a striver, is not attached to happiness, and is not proud of knowledge, his happiness and knowledge, will lead him to a state, which transcends the three guṇas. Similarly, actions and their fruit without attachment, will lead to attainment of the Supreme (Gītā 3/19).
The three guṇas (modes) are evolutes of prakṛti (nature) and he (the self), is free from nature and its modes. But, he is bound, because of his contact, with these modes. So, if he realizes this fact, he could be free from them.
*Link:—In the next verse, the Lord describes the natural function of the three guṇas (modes), before these bind the spirit.*

(14.188) ब्रह्मदेव का आयुष्य प्राप्त हो और सोते ही रहें, इसके अतिरिक्त उसे दूसरी इच्छा नहीं रहती;

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
Lord Krishna describes the word ajñāna meaning ignorance which is the antithesis of wisdom. The word jñāna meaning knowledge is the precise, accurate perception whereas ajñāna is the perverted, inaccurate perception.
The word tamas means darkness denoting the darkness of ignorance and is diametrically opposite to the light of knowledge.
The word mohanaṃ is that which deludes into illusion and the darkness of ignorance.
This tamas is also the cause of pramāda or madness and listlessness which is the inability to focus, having a fragmented attention span.
It is also the cause of alasya or indolence, sloth-like laziness which is the inability to properly execute any endeavour properly and nidrābhi or sleep is the disinclination of the senses to function terminating all activities.
All these things nibadhnāti or binds one to the material existence without reprieve.
The sublation of the external senses constitutes the dream state; but when the mind is also sublated then the dream state becomes sleep.
