9 *'The Sattva causes addiction to comfort; the Rajas, O Scion of Bharata, to action; but the Tamas, obscuring knowledge, causes in addition addiction to heedlessness.*
10 *'Overcoming Rajas and Tamas, the Sattva prevails, O Scion of Bharata; the Rajas (by overcoming) Sattva and Tamas: The Tamas (by overcoming) Sattva as well as Rajas. (196)*
When the bile strengthens itself by pushing aside phlegm and wind (कफवात) it makes hot (inflames) the entire body; or when at the end of hot and monsoon seasons, cold season sets in, the sky also is full of cold, or when the dreamy and wakeful states disappear, there only remains the deep slumber, and the mental attitude takes on the same hue, in that way when the Sattva Guna overpowers the Rajas and Tamas Gunas, (then) the soul says, 'how happy am I'! Similarly when the Tamas gets strong overpowering the Sattva and Rajas Gunas, it naturally causes the being to commit errors. In that same way with the overpowering of Sattva and Tamas Gunas, the Rajas gets strong and then the embodied soul—the king of the body—feels that nothing is more desirable than activism. I have discoursed, in three verses, on the special characteristics of the three Gunas, you do now hear attentively about the symptoms of the growth of the Sattva and others (Gunas).

English**'Rajastamaścābhibhūya sattvam bhavati bhārṇta'**—Goodness prevails, overpowering passion and ignorance. This mode develops illumination, purity, dispassion, generosity and detachment etc., overpowering, Rajogunā viz., greed, activity, disquietude and craving for worldly pleasure and prosperity etc., and Tamogunā viz., heedlessness, indolence, unnecessary sleep and delusion etc.
**'Rajah sattvam tamascaiva'**—Passion prevails overpowering, goodness and ignorance viz., greed, activity, disquietude and craving for worldly pleasure and prosperity prevails over the propensities of Tamogunā and the quality of Sattva, mentioned above.
**'Tamaḥ sattvam rajastathā'**—The mode of ignorance viz., heedlessness, indolence, excessive sleep and delusion etc., overpower, the traits of Sattvagunā and Rajogunā.
The order of describing should be that one of the modes, prevails overpowering the other two modes, and it binds a man. Here (from the sixth to the tenth verse), the Lord has reversed the order as the discussion relates as to how, it binds a man, how he is attached; and finally how, one of the modes prevails over the other two. This order is justified. The Lord, in the second verse of this chapter, explained that those who have renounced their connection with prakṛti, are not born at the time of creation, nor are they tormented at the time of dissolution. But those who are linked with prakṛti, get bound (14/5). Now a question arises, how they bind a man? The Lord, from the sixth to the eighth verse has explained how the three kinds of modes bind a man (spirit). Then, the question arises as to what they do before binding, the spirit. In response to this the Lord explains that they drive him to, happiness, to actions and to heedlessness (14/9). Again, the question arises how they drive him, so the Lord answers, that one of them prevails over the other two, (14/10). Thus the order kept by the God is justified.
**Appendix**—The mode (guṇa) which increases becomes predominant while the other two guṇas become subdued. This is the nature of modes.
*Link:—When one of the modes, prevails over the other two, what are the marks of that prepondering mode? The Lord first delineates the marks of the predominance, of the mode of goodness.*

Lord Krishna confirms the fact that the three guṇas or modes of sattva or goodness, Rājas or passion and tamas or nescience are the three qualities that exist within all jīvas or embodied beings in the material existence.
But owing to adṛṣṭa which is conditions imposed by the effects of past karma or reactions to actions, and determined as well by the types of food that were chosen to eat in sustaining the physical body in the previous life.
Based upon this assessment any of three guṇas may be dominant or they may neutralise each other or they may be antagonistic to each other depending upon which mode is more present and dominant within a jīva.
This being the reality it can be inferred by knowledge and discerned by witnessing the visible effects of the three guṇas as manifested within any jīva.
