What is designated in verse one as tad brahma or the supreme spiritual substratum pervading all existence is the akṣaram paramam or the supreme indestructible ātma or soul.

Akṣaram is that which is not subject to decay or imperishable and is the collective given by the kṣetra-jñānis or those knowledgeable of the field of action or the informers of uninformed matter and ātma embodied beings.

The Subala Upaniṣad II states:

“The Unmanifest (avyakta) is absorbed into the Imperishable (akṣara), the Imperishable (akṣara) is absorbed into Source (Tamas)”

Avyakta, the indiscernible compound of spirit and matter merges into the akṣara, the indivisible compound, which descends into tamas or nescience.

Parama akṣaram is the superior indestructible ātma nature which is completely disengaged from prakṛti or the material substratum and not connected to even the akṣaram which comprises embodied beings and combines both.

The word svabhāva is also called adhyātma and indicates subtle material elements and its accompanying erratic tendencies:

These subtle elements are what adheres to the ātma in the descent of the supra subtle quintuple process from spirit to matter,

the last being the fifth stage which becomes the seminal fluids referred to in the Pañca-agṇi-vidyā or five-fold sacrificial fires which are described in the Chāṇḍogya Upaniṣad: V.III-X which is essential and has to be known by all aspirants.

Both akṣara and adhyātma must be realised by the mumumkshus or emancipation seekers for mokṣa or liberation from material existence

as akṣara, the immortal soul, is that what is worthy of selection and adhyātma the embodied being incarcerated in matter is worthy of rejection.

The sequence which manifests this descent into matter by the jīva or embodied being is called viṣarga and

karma refers to that specific action which activates a corresponding reaction and determines the destination and manifestation of all creatures into embodied states whether human, animal, fish etc.

The final action which actually causes manifestation into material existence is known as procreation between males and females of different species.

The Vedic scriptures declare that in the fifth stage the male discharges the sacrificial water into the females sacrificial fire and a new embodied being is created. This act is known as karma.

The knowledge of karma, akṣara and adhyātma are all prerequisites of knowledge absolutely essential for those seeking mokṣa or liberation from the material existence.

Otherwise one will be ignorant of what is worthy of rejection and what is worthy of attention and unable to properly interact accordingly. An example is following in verse 11 concerning brahmacharya or celibacy.

Supreme Immutable is Brahman, thus to remove any doubts about the importance of the Vedas. अध्यात्मम् is that which elevates the self or that by which the self is controlled. Similarly, Jiva is his स्वभावः i. e. the inherent nature which is helpful to him in elevating his self. Therefore Jiva is that which is made up of the innate nature. Since the attitude is always to elevate the innate nature, it is helpful. Associated with internal organs, the word भावः is used, (however) since all the internal organs do not respond equally in the same manner, another meaning of the word भावः could also be not helpful to the organs. The word स्व connotes the relationship with the Lord. The action of the Lord which creates the gross objects and the creatures to be elevated is known विसर्गः. विसर्गः is the special creative activity of the Lord.

“तद् इति विशेषणात् ब्रह्मेत्युक्तमन्यदेव | प्रकृत्यादिनां मध्ये यत् किञ्चित् उपरि साधियज्ञं च || इति | च शब्दादधिभूतादिसहितत्वेन विष्णुज्ञानानमन्यदेव इति संशयः किं तद् ब्रह्म इति प्रश्नकारणम् ||” - Because of the adjective tat, Brahman alone is spoken amidst all other words like Prakriti etc. Further when the words accompanied with sacrifice along with the elements which are useful to the creatures (adhibhootadi), are used for attaining the wisdom of Sri Vishnu alone, why should there be any doubt about others being Brahman? When it is established that the Supreme Immutable is primarily Sri Vishnu alone, the doubt is dispelled. The, reminder is for the ignorant ones for the removal of their doubts. - Again for the removal of doubts, ‘those who think the Unmanifest as the manifest one’ saying thus Sri Vishnu Himself by the word अव्यक्तं is clarified. Here in the separate question, अव्यक्तोऽक्षर इत्युक्तः - ‘That which is immutable unmanifest’ is for the clarification of the nature of gradation to the aspirants, having made a reference to कूटस्थोऽक्षर, the Immutable dwelling within, ‘I am the immutable and the best’ thus the principle of Sri Vishnu and subservience of others gods has been shown.

3 *The Exalted One Spake:* “Brahman is the Highest Immutable: the process-of-subjectivation is the assumption of inwardness (by it). What is designated the (creative-) movement is the genetic act which causes the beings and forms of existence to spring up. (15)

Then said the Lord of the universe, “The Supreme Brahman fills up the entire porous body, and yet does not ooze out. It is as subtle as the very void, and yet it has been sieved through the fabric of Ether; and yet so thin and subtle a stuff, even when stirred, does not trickle down through the bag (झोळी) of worldly knowledge. And that self-contained and self-sustained Being is Adhyātma, Spirit, which is pure eternal being—in itself, that knows not change, when space and body come into being, or cease to be. And now know ‘Karma’—action—to be this: by some unknown process, at times the multi-coloured clouds emerge in the clear (blue) sky. So come into being from that formless and pure Brahman, the Prakriti (Nature), egotistic sense and other diverse elements, and then begins the process of the formation of the universe. On the arid planes of fancy-free Brahman germinates the seed of the primeval desire and there issue forth shoots of multiform desire which soon get fully laden with bunches of fruit in the form of universe. Looking carefully at these, they appear to be full of the (original) seed viz. the Brahman, but it appears impossible to count the separate things coming into being and then ending after a brief life. The different particles of the universe go on repeating the primeval desire—“I am many”—and then goes on growing in limitless abundance this universe in diverse ways. But all these are overfull with the Supreme Brahman, the plurality and the distinctiveness sweeping over it like floods. Similarly it is not to be known, how such “even” and “uneven” flux of things comes to be created in the universe. May it be that this entire cosmic process, made up of the moveables and immoveables, goes on merely as a pastime. Then (why) do there appear lakhs of diverse orders of living beings? No limit in regard to number or distinction can ordinarily be set to these shoots of beings, but to trace them to their origin, one must resolve them in the eternal void Brahman. Thus where the author or the motive of the activity is not to be traced and yet, the effect viz. the universe appears suddenly and growing rapidly,—with this manifold appearance of things which comes from the formless Brahman, without its doing anything, and wears a form perceptible to the senses, is called Karman (creative movement).

'Akṣaraṁ brahma paramam'—The Supreme Imperishable is called 'Brahma'. Though in the Gītā, the term 'Brahma' has been used

for 'Praṇava' (the holy monosyllable 'Om'), Veda (sacred scriptures of the Hindus) and prakṛti (matter) etc., yet, here it has been used for the Supreme, Imperishable, attributeless-formless, Lord.

'Svabhāvo'dhyātmamucyate'—One's own self, is called 'adhyātma'. The path of spirituality is also called 'Adhyātma', and the science of the soul viz., metaphysics, is also called 'Adhyātma' (Gītā 10/32). But, here it has been used, for one's self.

'Bhūtabhāvodbhavakaro visargaḥ karmasamjñūtaḥ'—The pursuit of mind, of the Lord (viz., the renunciation), that is the immediate cause of man, having come into existence, is called 'Karma'.

At the time of final annihilation, prakṛti (primordial matter or nature), is supposed to be inactive, while at the time of creation, prakṛti is supposed to be active. The cause of this activity, is the Lord's pursuit of mind to become manifold, from one. This pursuit of mind, is the cause of the creation. At the time, of final annihilation, beings with egoism and collected actions, merge into nature and then nature, including beings, merges into God. To activate, the merged nature, from the Lord's pursuit of mind, there is discharge or renunciation, which is the cause of man, having come into existence, and with it the chain of actions begins.

Lord Kṛṣṇa, in the fourteenth chapter, declares, 'My prakṛti (nature) is the womb of all creatures; in which, I place the seed (germ) (14/3-4). Here, 'placing the seed' means, that the Lord links the souls with the bodies, according to fruit of actions, of their previous births. The bodies, are born of nature and in the bodies, the soul is a fragment of God (Gītā 15/7). Thus, all beings are born, by the union of nature and God.

In the twenty-sixth verse of the thirteenth chapter, the Lord declares, 'Whatever being animate or inanimate, is born, know that, as emanated from the union of 'Kṣetra' (Matter) and 'Kṣetrajña' (Spirit or Soul)'. The Lord's pursuit of mind, is the cause of this union. In that pursuit, there is no pride, of the Lord.

He has pursuit of mind, when past influences of actions of the previous births of beings at the time of final annihilation, get matured to bear fruit.* In this way, the actions of beings inspire the Lord, to have a pursuit of mind to change Himself, into manifold forms, from one. All actions performed by persons of different 'Varṇas' (castes), are called 'Karma'. It means, that an important act, is the Lord's pursuit of mind, and then the chain of actions begins.

**Appendix**—'Svabhāvo'dhyātmamucyate'—'parā prakṛti' is God's nature—'prakṛtiṁ vidhi me parām' (Gītā 7/5). Either call it 'prakṛti' or call it 'Svabhāva' (nature)—both are the same. This 'parā prakṛti' viz., 'the embodied soul' has been mentioned as 'adhyātma'. The Lord has called it His fragment—'mamavārīśo jīvaloke' (Gītā 15/7).

'Svabhāvo'dhyātmamucyate'—The second meaning of this expression is that in boyhood, youth and old age; in wakefulness, sleep and sound sleep; in eighty-four lac forms of life; in creation and dissolution; in new creation and final dissolution, the soul never ceases to be—'nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ' (Gītā 2/16) viz., the existence of the soul ever persists.

The action of the creation of the universe has been called 'tyāga' (renunciation), it means that in it there is renunciation of the constancy of divinity. The reason is that divinity is fixed and constant and renunciation of that constancy is Karma.*

The Lord's action of the creation of the universe is the earliest action* from which the tradition of actions followed. Therefore

* Beings while working continuously get tired and sleep in spite of having their pride of doership, attachment for the fruit of actions and collected actions. After sleep their tiredness is removed and their bodies, senses, minds and intellects are refreshed and they regain energy to work. Similarly, beings with the pride of doership, attachment for the fruit of actions and collected actions merge into Nature. The accumulated actions of those beings with the passage of time by becoming mature bear fruit. There the Lord has His pursuit of mind to give them birth according to their actions. His pursuit is called 'Action'.

within the term 'karma' (action), three types of actions are included (i) Creation of the universe, (ii) mere 'kriyā' which does not bear any fruit, (iii) virtuous and sinful actions which bear fruit.

The Lord's action of the creation of the universe is indeed 'akarma' (inaction). The Lord has also declared 'tasya kartāramapi māṃ viddhyakartāramavyayam' (Gītā 4/13)—'though I am the creator of the universe, yet know Me, the immortal Lord, to be a non-doer.'

(8.19) इस प्रकार अपनी सहज स्थिति से रहनेहारी जो उस परब्रह्म की नित्यता है उसे, हे सुभद्रापति! अध्यात्म कहते हैं;

(8.27) जीवभाव के और भी अनेक अंकुरों की कुछ मर्यादा नहीं है, और यदि यह देखा जाय कि यह सब किससे उत्पन्न होता है तो मूल अव्यक्त है;
