The path of light is the archi-adi being illuminating and the path of darkness is the dhūmadi or smoke.

One who at death is guided on the path of light does not return to the worlds of mortals; but one who is at death guided on the path of darkness does return and must be reborn again.

The path of light is dual for two types of aspirants being: the jñāni the god seeker and the jijnasuh the soul seeker.

The path of darkness is singular for the atharthi or fruitive seeker who performs meritorious activities with the desire to reap the benefits and rewards in the hereafter.

Thus two paths are given for the three types of aspirants.

The Chāṇḍogya Upaniṣad V.X.I-III states:

“Those who know this and those who worship with faith, meditate in the forest etc., they go to the light”. (Chan. Up., 5.10.1)

Those aspirants who have realized the ātma or soul and those who in seclusion meditate with faith and devotion on the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent Supreme Lord enter the archi-adi path of light and do not return.

“But those who in the village perform Vedic and secular acts of a meritorious nature and the giving of alms —they pass to the smoke”. (ibid., 5.10.3).

Those aspirants who in their daily affairs devote themselves to Vedic rituals, public works, charity and philanthropic activities as well as other pious acts, all enter the dhūmo ,the path of darkness and must return.

“यत्कालाद्यभिमानिदेवता गता आवृत्यनावृत्ती गच्छन्ति ता आह – यत्र इत्यादिना | काल इत्युपलक्षणम् | अग्न्यादेरपि वक्ष्यमाणत्वत् ||” - Sri Krishna speaks about the presiding deities through whose help, if one departs, one reaches the state of freedom or the state of being in bondage, yatra kaale is only a qualifying statement Since ‘through Agni, the splendour’ etc. are also the avenues, he also speaks about them.

| दिवादिवेताभिस्तु पूजितो ब्रह्म याति हि | इति हि बाह्ये | मासाभिमानीन्योऽयनाभिमानी च पृथक् | तच्चोक्तं गारुडे – पूजितस्त्वयननासी मासैः परिवृतेन ह | इति | अहरभिजिता शक्लं पौर्णमास्या अयनं विपुवा सह |” - ज्योति is represented by the deity known as अर्चि, it is so declared, “They attain अर्चि”. Similarly, in Narada Puraana - “After attaining Agni and then अर्चिः and thereafter attaining the worlds of अह etc”. For Agni and the rest are the presiding deities or else it would not be in accordance with scripture to say, “During the day time he attains the bright portion of the month”. Since there is in essence nothing but the day, how can the equanimous could be said to have attained Brahman in days of Shukla portion of the month? Thus, in Brahma Puraana.

The presiding deities of the month and of the portion of the months would be proper interpretation. “The knowers of wisdom worshipping the presiding deities of the months as well by those of the fortnights...”, this in Garuda Puraana. Along with the presiding deities, अह, शुक्लं and अयनं and other related presiding deities like विपु also should be worshipped. “Honouring the presiding deities of the day as well those of the night as well the presiding deities of the bright Moon as well as those of the dark Moon, by the presiding deities of the northern as well the southern course and विपु one who has realized Brahman attains Keshava”, thus in Brahma Vaivarta Puraana.

“यत्र कालाभिमानिदेवतासु मृत्युनन्तरं प्रयाताः | अग्निज्योतिर्धूमानामकालाभिमानित्वेऽपि कालप्राचुर्यात् काल इत्युच्यते || अग्निज्योति द्विधा वह्नेः पुत्रो व्यवस्थितः | तं प्राप्य याति ब्रह्मिष्ठो दिवासाद्यभिमानिनः || इति सतत्वे ||” - The deities presiding over Time are those through whose assistance one departs after death. Even Agni, splendour, smoke etc. even though not the presiding deities over Time, are spoken as time in general usage. “As Agni and splendour in such dual form, the son of Primal Agni is established. The one who abides in Brahman, attaining these two finally reaches the Presiding Deity” thus in Sat-Tatva text.

तत्कालमरणविवक्षयामग्निज्योतिर्धूमानामयोगः | अथ यो दक्षिणे प्रमीयते पितृणामेव महिमानं गत्वा चन्द्रमसः सायुज्यं सलोक्तामाप्नोत्येतौ वै सूर्याचन्द्रमसोर्महिमानी ब्राह्मणो विद्वानभिजयति तस्माद् ब्रह्मणो महिमानमाप्नोति || इति विदुषोदक्षिणायनमरणेऽप्यपुनरावृत्या ब्रह्मप्राप्तिश्रुतेः | विद्वान् ब्रह्म समाप्नोति यत्र तत्र मृतोऽपि सन् || इति पादमे ||” -There, the Time is not the presiding deity but Agni, splendour or the smoke etc. “Now those who die during Dakshinaayana, the period of southern part of the sun, they receive respects due to those ancient fathers, and acquiring likeness of the Moon, attain the corresponding world. But those who are qualified to receive Wisdom of Brahman, they having received the appropriate respect in the world of Sun and the Moon, attain finally the world of Brahman. Thus for one who is Wise in Wisdom of Brahman. There is no return even if death comes in Uttaraayan or Dakshinayan”. Thus the wise ones have expressed their view that the knower of the Brahman will not return even if he dies in Dakshinaayan. “The Knower of the Brahman attains the Supreme whenever he may have died”, thus in Padma Puraana.

26 *“These then are the Bright and the Dark Pathways of the living world, which are deemed eternal; by the one departing, he returns not; by the other (departing), he again returns. (238)*

These are the two pathways from the beginning of Time—one straight and the other crooked; I have spoken of them, so that you should know which is good and which is evil, and what is real and what is unreal, and you should find out what is your real good. Just see, will anybody take a leap into deep waters when there is seen available an excellent raft? Who would follow a crooked path leaving a good one? How would one, able to discriminate between poison and nectar, leave off nectar? In the same way, he who sees a straight way, would not follow a crooked one. Therefore, the (first) thing one should do is to test what is real and what is false, and once this test is taken, no harm shall be done at the critical time. Else, a very grave danger awaits the Yogin, at the time of the fall of the body and there would arise a great confusion about the two path-ways, and the study of the Yoga Discipline made all through the life, will all be in jeopardy. If a being is to miss accidentally the straight path-way and to take to the smoky (dark) one, he will get tied down to the rope (दावण) to which all creations in the grip of life and death have been tied down, and will have to be revolving in the cycle of births and deaths. Keeping in mind these great difficulties and dangers and wishing to tell you how to escape from these, I made clear to you, in detail, both the path-ways of the Yoga. One leads to the Supreme, while the other entangles you in the cycle of births and deaths. What one will have, will depend upon the (kind of) path-way he would, by chance, find himself on.

‘Śuklakṛṣṇe gatī hyete jagataḥ śāśvate mate’—All creatures, according to their actions, or by God's grace, sometime or other, receive this human life, and then according to the actions of this human life, go to higher, middle or lower regions. Now, it depends upon them, whether they pass along the bright path or the dark path, because they are all linked to the two paths.

So long as, men attach importance to perishable objects of the world, and have a desire for them, they can go to lower regions, even after reaching higher ones. Similarly, being fraction of the Lord, they can go, to the higher regions. So, a striver should ever be alert and cautious. He should, never attach importance to perishable things of the world and should never hate a person, because that person being a fraction of the Lord, may be inclined towards Him any time.

As the Lord, has declared Yoga as imperishable, the two paths, bright and dark, are also imperishable and eternal.

'Ekayā yātyanāvṛttimanyayāvartate punaḥ'—Strivers proceeding by the bright path, have not to return; they go to the abode of Brahmā, and attain emancipation, with Brahmā. But persons proceeding by the dark path, return i.e., follow the cycle of birth and death.

(8.242) अतएव सामने आये हुए भले-बुरे की परीक्षा करनी चाहिए। परीक्षा करने से कोई अकालिक संकट नहीं आ सकता;
