For one knowing the archi-adi, the path of light which leads to mokṣa or liberation from material existence, and the path of darkness, which leads to bondage in the material existence, there will never be any infatuation and delusion at the time of death.

Such a yogi will travel by his own self earned divine path escorted by the presiding demigods of the path of light.

Thus one should with great faith and enthusiasm meditate and perform selfless Vedic activities without desire that keeps one firmly upon this path.

Daily meditation constitutes the proper performance of one's daily activities as authorised by the bona fide spiritual master either Vaiṣṇava or Brāhmaṇa from one of the four bona fide sampradāyas as revealed in Vedic scriptures.

“एते सूती सोपाये ज्ञात्वाऽनुष्ठाय न मुह्यति | तच्चाह स्कान्दे – सूती ज्ञात्वा तु सोपाये चानुष्ठाय च साधनम् | न कश्चिन्मोहमाप्नोति नचान्या तत्र वै गतिः || इति ||” - The one who knowing this Truth and process of attaining it performs actions, will never forget the supreme Lord. Therefore, it is said in Skanda Purana: “Knowing these two paths along with the process, the instruments and the methodology, the one is not deluded in knowing the final goal”.

27 *“Knowing these Pathways, O Son of Pṛthā, the Yogin is never confounded. Therefore, at all times, do thou remain steadied in Yoga. (247)*

Let that pass: for one cannot be sure what might happen at the time of death. Whatever he is destined to be by fate he shall get (even) without wishing for it. How could it happen then, that one would get united to the Supreme Brahman, by following one of these pathways? Whether the body perishes or not our soul is verily the Supreme Spirit. The rope itself makes an end of the error taking it to be a snake! Is the water ever conscious if it has got any ripples or not? From first to last it exists in its own pure being with or without ripples. It (water) does not come to be with the advent of ripples, nor does it perish with their disappearance. In that way those that get absorbed in the Supreme Brahman, even while in the (human) body-form, are called “Disembodied” (विदेही). Now since there is left not even a trace of the body in the case of those that have become bodiless, how should anything perish at any time? How then are they to search for a path-way and whence, where, and when (are they) to go, since the place (देश) and the time have all merged in their Supreme. Just see. Does it ever happen that the sky (reflections) appearing in an earthen jar has, at the breaking of the jar, to rise up quite straight in order to be able to be merged in the unbounded sky, and if it does not do so does it fail to be one with it? The fact is that with the breaking of the jar, only the form (of the reflections in it) is destroyed: yet the original pure sky existed, even before the jar came to be prepared and continues to exist (as it is) even after its (the jar’s) breaking up. Therefore, those Yogins, that get absorbed in the Supreme Brahman, through their knowledge of the Brahman, never experience any difficulty in regard to the pathways viz. which is right and which is wrong. Therefore, Oh Son of Pandu, you be ever steady in Yoga, and through that stage you will, without further ado, be absorbed in the Supreme Brahman and then your free eternal union in the Brahman will not be shaken, whether the body lives or dies. Such a soul united to the Supreme Brahman is neither born at the time of creation of the universe, nor has it anything to fear from death at the time of the world’s dissolution: nor is he entangled, during the cycle of coming and going between the creation and the dissolution of the universe, in any such delusions leading to heavenly and worldly enjoyments. He alone, who becomes a Yogin with the realization of this knowledge, is secure in the enjoyment of the fruit of it, since he spurns the enjoyment of the sense pleasures and attains unto the form of the Self. Holding them as utter trash he scorns and renounces even the sovereign powers and enjoyments which are famed to crown the heavenly life of Indra and other gods.

'Naite sṛti pārtha jānanyogī muhyati kaścana'—Strivers, who do not attach importance to perishable objects, are followers of bright path. But those persons, who are engrossed in the world and whose aim is to hanker after prosperity and pleasures, are in complete darkness. People who by controlling

their senses, from the worldly pleasures, perform actions, such as oblation, penance and charity etc., in order to enjoy the heavenly pleasures, are also in the dark, because they have to return from the higher regions, and have to follow the wheel of birth and death.

Thus, a striver by knowing the secret of the two paths, becomes a Yogī i.e., he performs actions without having any desire for the fruit of actions, because he transcends the pleasures of this world, as well as, of the next one. Thus, he is not deluded.

A Yogī, is he whose aim, is to remain equanimous, in acquisition and non-acquisition, of worldly pleasure.

‘Tasmātsarveṣu kāleṣu yogayukto bhavārjuna’—One who is determined, that he has to realize God, remains equanimous, in favourable and unfavourable circumstances, and incidents etc. Therefore Lord Kṛṣṇa directs Arjuna to be established in Yoga, in the form of equanimity i.e., without being affected, by favourable and the unfavourable circumstances, he should make their right use. In favourable circumstances he should, serve the world, and in unfavourable circumstances he should renounce, desire for favourable circumstances.

Appendix—Only the man ridden with desire gets deluded viz., paves the way to birth and death. The man, who knows the bright and the dark paths, being selfless, does not pave the way to birth and death viz., he does not pass by the dark path.

In the seventh verse of this chapter the Lord declared—‘tasmātsarveṣu kāleṣu māmanusmara yudhya ca’ and here He declares—‘tasmātsarveṣu kāleṣu yogayukto bhavārjuna’—it means that thinking (remembrance) of God viz., to worship God is ‘Yoga’ and to be established in equanimity viz., to be detached from the world, is also Yoga. Both have the same result.

(8.248) परन्तु 'शरीर रहे अथवा जावे हम तो केवल ब्रह्म ही हैं, क्योंकि रस्सी पर जो मिथ्या सर्पत्व दिखाई देता है वह रस्सी के ही कारण है;
