“This Māyā [deluding potency of the cosmos] originates from Me, for the purpose of recreation, it is by nature divine and therefore difficult to overcome.”

The word Māyā is used to describe the effects of the three Guṇas, because it has the power to generate amazing effects like the magical tricks of Āsuras and Rākṣasas.

Take for example the passage: —

“Then the excellent discus, the flaming Sudarśana, was despatched by the Lord to defend the boy [Prahlāda].

The thousand Māyās or wonderfully created weapons of the evil-minded Śambara were foiled one after another, by that quickly moving discus, for protecting the body of the boy.” (V.P., 1.19.19-20)

Here the term Māyā does not convey the sense of ‘false’:

Even in the case of magicians, who are called Māyāvin (those who possess Māyā), with the aid of certain incantations, drugs etc., they can produce illusory objects, but the perceptions of those objects are actually real.

The term ‘Māyā’ refers to the incantations, drugs etc. which have the power of creating real impressions.

Because [grammatically speaking] the meaning of a word, should be the same in all contexts –the term ‘Māyā’ can be applied to the illusory objects that are produced, only in a secondary sense. Its primary sense is in regard to the ‘real impressions’ created in the mind.

It is just like in the statement ‘The platform groans.’ (a figurative expression having reference to the sound that is produced).

The Māyā of the Lord consisting of the three Guṇas is existentially real and is specifically taught in texts like:—

“Know then Māyā to be the Prakṛti and the possessor of the Māyā to be the great Lord”. (Sve.Up., 4.10).

Māyā not only obscures the essential nature of the Lord but also creates the condition of the mind that sees the created objects as enjoyable. Therefore, the entire universe, deluded by the Lord’s Māyā, does not know the Lord of boundless bliss.

Śrī Krishna teaches the way of deliverance from Māyā is to take refuge in Him.

Why then, does everyone not take recourse to seeking refuge in the Lord which leads to devotion?

“तर्हि कथमेव न ज्ञायस ? इत्यत आह - त्रिभिः इति | तादात्म्यार्थं मयद् | तच्चोक्तम् - तादात्म्यार्थं विकारार्थं प्राचुर्यार्थं मयद् त्रिधा इति | नहि गुणकार्यभूता माया | गुणमयि इति च वक्ष्यति | सिद्धं च कार्यस्यापि तादात्म्यम् - तादात्म्यं कार्यधर्मादिः सम्योगो भिन्नवस्तुनोः इत्यादि व्यासयोगे ||” - Why does he (Arjuna) not know? This is explained in three ways. To show his attachment (to the attributes), the word माया is used. माया is used in three ways as Self, as modification and as effulgence. Not as Sri Durgadevi's actions, thus Gita-Kalpa. He speaks of गुणमयी as his attributes. His actions also subscribe to his Nature. One's inclination is compatible with one's nature, association is with two distinct objects, thus in Vyasa Yoga.

भावैः means by inclination. All objects become perceivable by us because of their attributes and inclinations. By these, they are seen; इदम् is used to show that they are not deluded. Seeing our own body consisting of threefold attributes, those who think that Lord's body is also similarly formed, are deluded people. Seeing the bodies of Brahma and others with attributes, those who consider that Sri Vishnu also is similarly formed of body, being deluded men are under bondage, thus in Vyas Yoga. एभ्यः means by things having attributes. Sri Vishnu having been spoken as beyond the (threefold) attributes, entirely formless, devoid of three-fold attributes.

मदीयत्वात् | अहं हि देव इति |” - The reasons why has this delusion not been surmounted ? This is explained here, saying divine is this illusion which deludes people by her great power. Therefore, luminous, sport or play, desire to conquer, splendour, adoration, pleasure, imagination, brilliance and movement are the attributes. Why is it Divine ? Because of its being under the control of the supreme Lord, who alone is the Lord.

“श्रीभूदुर्गति या भिन्ना महामाया तु वैष्णवी | तच्छक्त्यनन्तांशहीनाऽथापि तस्याऽश्रयात् प्रभोः | अनन्तब्रह्मगुद्रादेनस्याः शक्तिः कलाऽपि हि | तेषां दुरत्ययाऽप्येषा विना विष्णुप्रसादतः || इति व्यासयोगे | तर्हि न कथञ्चिदत्येतुं शक्यत इत्यत आह - मामेव इति | अन्यत् सर्वे परित्यज्य मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते | गुर्वादिवन्दनं च मय्येव समर्पयन्ति | स एव च तत्र स्थित्वा गुर्वादिर्भवतीत्यादि पश्यन्ति आह च नारदीये ||” - Shri, Bhu and Durga are the distinct three forms of the Great Illusion, of Sri Lakshmi. She does not partake the endless energies of the Lord, since she has taken refuge in Him. Because of such protection, Rudra, Brahma and other Gods do not possess even a small part of her manifestation. Without the grace of Sri Vishnu even they cannot overcome her power, thus in Vyasa Yoga.

“तर्हि न कथश्चिदत्येतुं शक्यत इत्यत आह - मामेव इति | अन्यत् सर्वे परित्यज्य मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते | गुर्वा दिवन्दनं च मय्येव समर्पयन्ति | आह च नारदीये - मत्सम्पत्या तु गुर्वादीन् भजन्ते मध्यमा नराः | मदुपाधितया तांश्च सर्वभूतानि चोत्तमाः | इति | आचार्यचैत्यवपुत्रा स्वगतिं व्याडिक्ष इति च |” - To the question how can माया be surmounted, Sri Krishna replies saying taking refuge in Me. The one who renounces all else, taking refuge in supreme Lord alone, his adoration to the Teacher etc. reaches him alone or he perceives that (the Teacher) has become great because supreme Lord is abiding in him. The intermediate human beings because of My being near him, propitiate the Teacher. The superior ones propitiate all the creatures, they being manifested in Me, thus in Narada Purana. Through your form of consciousness, which is in Mind of the Teacher, You yourself teach the wisdom about Yourself.

This is explained in this verse. The are deprived of intelligence, because of their evil deeds. Same is the case with the mean ones among men, robbed of their Wisdom, they become bewildered in their intelligence. Therefore, they take shelter in demonic inclination. Here the word माययाऽपहता means robbed or concealed, stolen by the illusory energy. Awareness (ज्ञान) is the natural tendency of the one born; by illusion it becomes concealed. The one who is intent in satisfying the senses is असुर (unenlightened), thus in Vyasa Yoga. Among the Gods there is predominance of ज्ञान; among असुर enjoyment of senses is predominant, thus in Naarada Puraana.

“एकस्मिन्नेव भक्तिः इति एकभक्तिः | तच्चोक्तं गारुडे - मय्येव भक्तिर्नान्यत्र एकभक्तिः स उच्यते || इति ||” - Devotion in Me alone, singular devotion. Therefore it is said in Garuda Purana: “The devotion to Me alone and to no one else is said to be Singular Devotion”.

“बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान् भवति | तच्चोक्तं बाह्ये - जन्माभिर्बहुभिर्ज्ञात्वा ततो मां प्रतिपद्यते || इति |” - At the end of many lives he becomes aware, therefore, it is said in Brahma Puraana: “Being aware after taking many births, he attains to Me”.

People who are under the influence of Sri Lakshmi are essentially deluded by Sri Vishnu Himself. Those who propitiate Sri Vishnu, only they will surely cross over the Illusion. Gross Illusion and its presiding deity Sri Lakshmi both are subservient to Sri Vishnu. Therefore, everyone should surrender to Sri Vishnu with uncompromising devotion. The form of fullness of devotion is not possible to arise anywhere else. अनन्यभक्ति - uncompromising devotion should be known as that in which one is attuned to Sri Vishnu in all entirety. The devotion to Sri Lakshmi, Brahma, Rudra and others should be considered as devotion to Sri Vishnu, because they are all subservient to Him. Knowing thus, one reaches Him but not through any other means. The Complete One is Vasudeva alone, no one else. The ones who knows thus are very rare in the world, while all are, verily, the mixed aspirants.

14 *'For, this mine Guṇa-constituted Cosmic-Illusion is hard to overcome. Only those that seek refuge in Me alone, are able to cross this Cosmic-Illusion.* (68)

Now, Oh Dhananjaya, how to conquer this Māyā to attain the realization of the vision that makes you one with the essence of My Eternal Being is the question. From the highlands of the Most High, the river Māyā starts as a stream of the weak force; in this stream the gross elements are a small bubble. Then, in course of time, it rushes on with an ever-increasing speed in the cosmic stream of the created things and wildly comes down, overflowing the two high banks in the form of action and quiescence. The Māyā then flooded with the downpour of the manifold things—(Guṇa-triad, the three constituent aspects—Sattva, Rajas and Tamas), and its over-rolling mass of water in the form of delusive awareness, sweeps away as it were, the human habitations in the form of restraint of mind and restraint of senses. There are then formed into it, whirlpools in the form of hatred, and its stream gets obstructed by bends in the form of jealousy, while formidable fish in the form of haughtiness keep on basking in it. There are many turnings and tangles in it in the form of the irresistible ties of family life, while dirt and fallen leaves and dry blades in the form of pleasure and pain, keep on floating over the flow of waters of actions and inactions. Waves and turnings of passions and desires dash against the islands of enjoyment of sense-objects, formed in the bed of this river, while bunches of foam of beings appear to get obstructed there. There appear ebullitions arising out of the three-fold conceit (of learning, riches and power) consequent on the mad frolics played by Ego-spirit in this river, and there also rush out waves of sense-objects. In this river there are created spots of deep water (डाहे) in the form of cycles of births and deaths, as the result of floods of (Sun) rise and (Sun) set and from these emerge and burst bubbles of universe constituted of the five gross elements. Fish in the form of blind passions cut out and swallow bits of flesh of courage and then these fish keep on whirling round and round along the eddying ignorance. The hope of a heavenly paradise is but the furious roar of this eternal stream of Māyā with its water made muddy by mad frenzy and flowing unto the marsh of quagmire of rituals-actions of Rajas quality. There are diverse and forcible currents of the Tamas quality in this river, while the still flow of the Sattva quality proves too deep to cross over to the other side (of the river). Such is verily the Māyā river. To ferry over it is a task hard indeed. The rushing torrents of cycles of births and deaths in this river make the forts in the Satyaloka to sink, and the boulders in the form of cosmic globes to roll over on their sides. The great waters of Māyā rush on with endless energy, and the flood does not show signs of ebbing yet. Who could then swim across the flood of the Māyā river? And the strangest mystery of this river is this: the very boats shaped to cross over this Māyā river turn out to be the cause of sinking. Hear, how this comes about: some who plunge into this flood, relying on the powerful arms of self-confidence, are soon lost forever; others are swallowed up by self-conceit in the deep waters of knowledge; a few others using the link of pompions (सांगाडे) in the form of Vedic Law tied to the stone of Ego-sense, are swallowed up entirely by the fish of arrogance. Some take their stand on their youth and give themselves up to lust and passion, with the result that they are devoured by alligators in the form of sense-pleasures, and moreover they are enmeshed in the tangles of dotage in the wave of old age in that river. Then dashing against the rocks of worldly sorrows, and being suffocated in the whirlpools of passion, wherever they try to raise their hands the vultures of calamities feed on them. Wallowing in the quagmire of grief, they are stuck up and lost in the sands of death. Creatures steeped in lust are lost for ever; some others use performance of sacrifices as a float, tying it under their waist and they are shut up in the dark chambers of the Pleasures of Paradise: some others rely on the arms in the form of actions with the object of securing salvation, but they are tossed into the whirlpool of conflicting duties. The Māyā flood is thus a stream wherein renunciation is no ferry and wisdom is no rope to cross over. 'Yoga' is perhaps the path, but it is very rarely used. Crossing this great stream Māyā, to us mortals, looks like this. Mortals can see the other bank of the river Māyā,—if a patient is cured without a regimen, or if a saint can control the thoughts of a crook, or if a voluptuary in the lap of fortune can forsake the prospect of enjoyment, or if a thief can rush boldly into an open meeting, or if a fish swallows the bait; or (if it be possible) for a timid person to turn back and lay low a ghost, or for a young deer to break through the snare of a hunter, or for an ant to transcend the mountain Meru. Therefore, Oh Son of Pandu, just as for a voluptuous man it is hard to tame and subdue his passion for woman, even so the river of Māyā cannot be forded by a living being. Only those that worship with unswerving devotion can with ease ford this river; he (such a one) is saved even the task of crossing over, since the flood of Māyā is all dried up on this side of existence. One who is lucky to get the boatman in the form of a Master-guide, and who has secured a strong waist-belt in the form of illumination and experience, and who has secured a raft in the form of the realisation of Self, and who has thrown away the night-mare of self-conceit, and who has escaped (from) the gale of fancy, and who has turned round the strong eddies of attachment for sense-objects, and who has reached landings of unions and joined self-realisation, and who has vigorously crossed over to the opposite bank of quiescence—such a one using vigorously his arms in the form of renunciation, and floating on the strength of staunch faith—'I am myself Supreme Brahman'—will reach at last without effort the other side of Liberation. Those that worship Me in this way cross over My Māyā. But such devotees are very rare and are not to be met with in numbers.

'Daivī hyeṣā guṇamayī* mama māyā duratyayā'—The Divine illusion of the Lord, consisting of the three modes of nature—Sattva, Raja and Tama is extremely difficult to surmount. People because of the desire of pleasures and prosperity, cannot be free from this illusion. Because of their attachment for the world, including the body and its pleasure and pain etc., they get entangled in them. This Divine illusion, is hard to surmount, when they accept the independent existence of the modes of Nature. If they do not accept their separate entity, besides God, they will overcome this Divine illusion.

'Māmeva ye prapadyante māyāmetām taranti te'—Those, who take refuge in Me, alone cross this illusion, because instead of beholding the three modes of Nature they behold Me only. As has already been described, these three modes of nature are neither

* Lord Kṛṣṇa in the twelfth verse has declared that the three modes of goodness, of passion and of ignorance proceed from Him. The same fact has been pointed out here when the Lord declares that His illusion consisting of the three modes is divine. The term 'Eṣā' stands for the threefold modes of nature by which the world is deluded as has been described in the thirteenth verse.

The Divine illusion has been called to be consisting of the three modes because this illusion in the form of the modes of Nature is the evolute of Nature. These are the modes rather than Nature (Prakṛti) which bind the man (soul).

in Me nor am I, in them. I perform all actions without having the least attachment. Thus, those who know this reality, do not get entangled, in the three modes and pierce this illusion. They do not depend on mind and intellect etc., because they know that mind and intellect etc., also belong to nature (matter), which perish every moment. So they have a disinclination towards matter, and an inclination towards Me, because they know that soul is an eternal fragment, of Mine.

Lord Kṛṣṇa, by using the terms 'Māmeva', means to say that they take refuge only in Him, because they do not accept any other existence, besides Him. Thus, those who without depending on money, material and men etc., take refuge in Him only i.e., depend on Him only, cross this illusion.

The senses, body, mind, intellect and worldly possessions, belong to the Lord and therefore, these are to be used in the service of the Lord, without any selfish motive. If we do not do so, we are dishonest and we do not perform our duty. But, if we use it in His service, He gets pleased and by His grace, we penetrate the veil of illusion.

Actually, all things have been given to us by God, but we feel proud of them, by thinking these as our own. This is an error. God is so gracious and generous that He gives the things, in such an unique way, that He does not show that they have been given by Him. So we accept these as our own. Only devotees, can realize His grace and generosity. But, those who have disinclination for Him, cannot realize that all the things have been bestowed upon them, by God, by His grace and they cannot possess them forever. So they cannot have an exclusive devotion, for God.

This verse means, that those who take refuge in Him i.e., those who possess divine traits, cross His Divine illusion, and those who take refuge in gods i.e., those who possess, demoniacal traits—attaching importance to body and pleasures etc., cannot

cross His Divine illusion. Such persons, possessing demoniacal traits have to return to life even though they might have gained, the world of Brahmā, but they have to follow, the cycle of birth and death.

**Appendix**—When a man turning away his face from the world, takes refuge in God, then he crosses (overcomes) the 'Māyā' (the evolute of the lower nature) viz., his ego is totally destroyed. 'Refuge in God' means to identify the self with God viz., to accept the entity of God only. He should assume neither the independent entity of the self nor of the 'Māyā'. He should depend neither on ego nor on 'Māyā' (modes). It needs no exertion, no effort.

The man himself has assumed the existence of 'Māyā'—'yayedam dhāryate jagat' (Gītā 7/5), 'manah ṣaṣṭhānindriyāni prakṛtisthāni karṣati' (Gītā 15/7). If he, not recognising the existence of 'Māyā', had taken refuge in God, he would have crossed the 'Māyā' viz., for him the 'Māyā' would have had no existence.

A man, by depending on the insentient (matter) viz., by assuming it as his and for him, himself becomes insentient (matter) and is called 'Jagata' (Gītā 7/13). But by depending on God, he attains divinity and becomes a devotee. By becoming a devotee, the world is lost to him viz., for him the world does not remain the world but it becomes the manifestation of God which it really is.

By the term 'māmeva' the Lord means to say, 'The soul is a fragment of only Mine (My own) (mama eva)—'mamaivāmso jīvaloke' (Gītā 15/7). Therefore if a striver takes refuge only in Me (mām eva), he crosses the 'Māyā'. So the devotees, who take refuge in Me, have no relationship with anyone else besides Me, their relation with anyone else is impossible because they hold that there is no other entity at all, besides Me. They don't see anyone else and anyone else is not seen to them. From

their view-point there is neither existence nor value of the lower nature and they don't regard it as theirs. They regard it as My manifestation as really it is.'

The devotees who follow the guidance of 'Viveka', having renounced dependence on ego viz., by renouncing the world, depend on God. But those who cannot follow the dictates of their Viveka, but have the predominance of faith and belief, such simple hearted and straightforward devotees with their ego (as they are, so) take refuge in God. The Lord Himself destroys the ego of such devotees (Gītā 10/11).

*Link:— In the previous verse, Lord Kṛṣṇa said, 'Those who take refuge in me alone, cross the Divine illusion of Mine.' Then why do all creatures not take refuge in Him? The answer follows:—*

(7.69) जिस माया नदी में ब्रह्म-पर्वत की टूटी हुई कगार में से, प्रथम संकल्परूपी जल का स्रोत लगते ही, महाभूतरूपी छोटा-सा बुलबुला निकलता है;

(7.70) जो सृष्टि-विस्ताररूपी प्रवाह से बहती हुई, कालगति के वेग से कर्ममार्ग और निवृत्ति-मार्ग-रूपी ऊँचे तटों पर से बहती चली है; (7.71) जो गुणरूपी मेघों की वृष्टि से भर कर मोहरूपी बाढ़ में यम-नियमों के नगर बहा ले जाती है;
