Food, the support of life, is also of three types - by food's relationship with the three guṇas or modes of material nature. Similarly yajñas or propitiation and worship by rituals is also of three types corresponding to the three guṇas; as well as austerities and charity.

The distinct gradations and variances found in the quality of each and every activity commences next.

“प्रीतिः अनन्तरिका | हृद्यत्वं दर्शने | स्थिराः च न तदैव पक्ता भवन्ति | तथा ह्याज्यादयः ||” - Joy is the immediate result. What continues to be joyous is hridya - desirable or acceptable to the heart. Even though all food are well-cooked, they are not digested immediately. For instance ghee and the like. Being steady or having the attributes of steadiness as in the case of ghee and the like

— One should know that by consuming food and performing sacrifices the receptivity of the people becomes fashioned. The saatvik persons normally perform luminous actions and others in respective manner. By these people Sri Vishnu is known through triple symbols - ॐ, तत् and सत्. Therefore, the firmly established Vedic injunctions in relation to Sri Vishnu are known as sat. The performance of actions which are done without having receptivity towards Him are known as a- सत्. Sri Hari is known as ॐ since He is elaborately clarified by the Wise through Vedic hymns and sacrifices. Therefore, pronouncing ॐ sacrifices are commenced by the priests. The performance of sacrifices without pronouncing ॐ in the beginning is of asuric, non-luminous in form. Pronouncing ॐ, without being wise of its significance will make him an asura. Since the fruits (of sacrifices) are due to Him (Brahman) and deliverance is due to the grace of Sri Janaardan, He (Brahman) is known as tat. Since He is pervaded everywhere and has all the auspicious attributes, He is called सत्.

“Making Me the Primal object, the forms and also the actions”, thus in Shabda Nirnaya. Absence of scriptural injunctions and non-receptivity to the Resplendent Lord are considered identical. Therefore, ‘given without receptivity’ - thus has been spoken later. That which is given to the Resplendent Lord without being receptive is what is given without following the scriptural rules. “An scriptures exit for the sake of being in communion with Sri Vishnu”, thus in Paingi scripture.

7 "As to the Diet also, it is of three kinds, and is found (severally) to appeal to all men. So the Sacrifice, Austerity and Charity: Listen to their division (now): (120)

Now I shall make it clear to you, Oh Warrior, how one and the same diet becomes of three kinds. The preparation of the diet follows the taste of the one taking it, and he (the eater) becomes the very servant of the three Gunas. The being who is the doer and the enjoyer, naturally develops his disposition according to the three kinds of Gunas and also acts in three different ways. Therefore the diet is of three different kinds. So also are (of three kinds) the sacrifices, the charities and the austerities. Now I shall tell you the signs (characteristics) of diet first as promised, which hear as I make them clear.

'Āhārastvapi sarvasya trividho bhavati priyaḥ'—In the fourth verse, the Lord, explained the means of ascertaining the conviction of a person by his sāttvika, rājasa and tāmasa worship. But how to know the conviction of a person who has no faith, and interest, in worship? The answer is, that every person, whether he is a believer or a non-believer, belonging to any sect or religion, has to eat food. So a man's conviction or faith can be known by the food, which is dear to him. By what dishes is a man naturally tempted viz., on hearing, seeing and tasting the food articles, by which the mind is attracted, that will determine, his sāttvika, rājasa or tāmasa, faith.

Some may think that this is a description of three kinds of food. If it is viewed from a gross point of view, the approach may appear correct. But if we ponder over it deeply, it is not correct. This is not description of three kinds of food. But actually it indicates a person's taste for food in order to judge his faith.

The terms 'Sarvasya' (all) and 'Priyaḥ' (dear), have been used to indicate, that each person out of all human beings, wants to eat a particular kind of food—sāttvika, rājasa or tāmasa, which is dear to him. Thus, his nature is inferred from the nature of food he likes and eats. Similarly 'Yajñastapastathā dānam' (sacrifice, austerity and charity)* are also of three kinds. It makes out

*Here the term 'Yajña' stands only for sacrifice, not for all duties or actions that are to be performed because besides the 'Yajña' (sacrifice), austerity

that a person studies books, keeps company, visits places and is engaged in different sorts of activities, according to his sāttvika, rājasa or tāmasa, temperament.

'Teṣām bhedamīmaṁ śrṇu'—Lord Kṛṣṇa asks Arjuna, to note the distinction of sacrifice, austerity and charity, according to a man's temperament. A man, offers charity to a Brāhmaṇa (member of the priest class), while another person offers charity, to a common man. Some keep company with virtuous persons, whose food and conduct etc., are pure, while others keep company with evil persons.*

It means, that people of sāttvika temperament like sāttvika (good) food, company, environment and actions, etc., while people of rājasika (passionate) temperament, have rājasika tastes, and those of tāmasika (ignorant) temperament, like food, company, environment and actions, which are not sanctioned by scriptures.

**Appendix**—Two kinds of actions are performed by a man according to his temperament—secular and scriptural. Therefore here within 'food', the secular actions (eating, drinking and the way of living etc.,) and within 'austerity, sacrifice and charity' the scriptural actions should be taken (understood).
