Those who perform actions with which Sri Vishnu is pleased and also please Brahma, Indra and others known as Manus are also blessed by Sri, the presiding deity of knowledge. Those who perform mixed sacrifices, who disbelieve the supremacy of Sri Vishnu, who are receptive to the forms of the Gods without accepting their gradations (taaratamya), should be known as raajasic in nature. Their sacrifices being of lower order they accept Yakshas and Rakshasas in the shape of Brahma, Indra etc. Those who consider Sri Hari similar to other gods or lesser than Him or other gods as Brahman are those whose receptivity is known to be taamasic. The fruits of their sacrifices are received by Shiva, Skanda and such others belonging to the company of Shiva, who are extremely taamasic. The saatvics attain deliverance, the raajasics attain symbolic heaven and the taamasics attain the region of creatures, in that order. The ones who perform sacrifices according to the prescribed rites and rituals and refrain from performing those prohibited by scriptures, they propitiating Sri Vishnu and attain Him, freed from illusory knowledge. In which case, where is the need to say that those who perform according to the scriptural injunctions will surely attain Sri Hari?

English4 *'The Sattva-dominated persons proffer worship unto the God; the Rajas-dominated unto the Yakṣas; the rest who are Tamas-dominated proffer worship unto Departed-Spirits and Ghostly-Hordes.*
Those moulded of Sattva faith have generally the liking for Heaven. They master all arts and sciences, perform select sacrificial rites—nay they even get admission in the region of Gods. Those, Oh Warrior, that are formed of Rajas faith, worship the demons and other spirits (living in ethereal regions). Now, about the Tamas-dominated faith. It is a (regular) heap of sins, very rugged and cruel. They (of Tamas faith) kill beings for making ritual offerings and worship on dirty funeral grounds at evening hours, assemblages of ghostly orders and corpses (departed spirits). Such beings, should be known (as if) formed out of the essence extracted from the Tamas quality and are the very home of the Tamas (—ridden) faith. These are the three-fold classes of the faith found (abiding) in (three) different signs in the world and I have explained them to you with the sole object that you should preserve only the Sattva faith, casting away the remaining two—the opposing ones. Those that claim the Sattva-faith as their protector have, Oh Dhananjaya, nothing to fear (as coming in the way as a goblin) of their becoming one with the Deity (कैवल्य) even though they might not have studied the Brahma-Sūtras, (a standard work on metaphysics) or might not be well-versed in the Shastras (Scriptures), or might not have grasped the great theories (सिद्धांत-Established Truths). But one who acts with perfect Sattva faith and follows in the footsteps of those elders who are themselves the very interpretation incarnate of the Shruti and Smriti Scriptures, and set an example of righteous conduct to others (by their own acts)—such a one acting as he does following their way of conduct, automatically secures the same fruit as the wise do (secure through their study of the Scriptures). One succeeds with great difficulty in lighting a lamp while another without any trouble lights another (his own) lamp on the first: does the latter in any way get cheated in respect of the light? Or, one builds a (big) house spending unlimited money over it; could not another (a stranger) dwelling in that house, experience the same amount of comfort? That apart: would a tank satisfy the thirst only of him who constructed it and of no one else? Or would the only one who cooked food (in a house) get it there (for eating) and none else? No need to say more: yet, would the Ganges (Godavari) be the holy waters of the Ganges only for the Sage Goutama (who with great effort brought it to the earth) and prove to be an ordinary stream to others in the world? Therefore, one who follows in firm faith another knowing (better) the methods in the Scriptures, according to one's own intellect, secures liberation even though he be illiterate (मूर्ख).

English'Yajante sāttvikā devān'—The sāttvika (good) people, possessing divine nature, worship the gods. Here, the term 'Devān' denotes the five chief deities—Viṣṇu (the preserver), (Rāma or Kṛṣṇa etc.), Śiva (the destroyer), Gaṇeśa, Durgā (Power) and the Sun, because the term 'Deva', stands for God (Divinity) and His nature viz., divine nature, which is conducive to liberation (16/5). Thus, strivers possessing the sāttvika (good) faith worship, anyone of five chief deities, according to their natural faith. The worship of twelve Ādityas, eight Vasus, eleven Rūdras, and two Aśvini Kumāras, without any selfish motive, is also regarded as sāttvika worship.
'Yakṣarakṣāṃsi rājasāḥ'—The passionate, worship the gnomes
and the demons. They are included among the gods. The gnomes, hanker after the accumulation of wealth, and then guard it, while the demons are bent upon the destruction, of others. The passionate, worship them, to satisfy their own desires and to destroy others.
'Pretānbhūtaganāmścānye yajante tāmasā janāh'—The ignorant people, worship spirits and ghosts. Those, who are dead are called 'Preta', while those who are in the forms of the life of ghosts, are 'Bhūta'.
Here, the manes should not be included in the term 'Preta' (spirit), because those, who worship the manes as a part of their duty without any desire for the fruit of their actions (worship), are sāttvika (good). The Lord in the Gītā, has not prohibited the worship of manes (Gītā 9/25). Those who worship the manes, having a desire for fruits, such as their own safety and reward etc., go, to the manes. Such worshippers, regard their manes as their favourite deities, who hold the highest positions. So, they go to the abode of the manes, they cannot go to higher regions, which are beyond the abode of the manes. But, those who worship the manes as a part of their duty, without having any desire for fruits, are sāttvika (good or pure), they are not rājasa (passionate).
Those, who feed dogs and crows selflessly, obeying the ordinance of scriptures, do not attain these. Similar, is the case with those, who worship the manes, without any desire for fruits. Their worship, leads them to salvation. Similarly obsequies, such as Nārāyaṇabali and Gayā-Śrāddha (offering of water, food etc., to the Brāhmaṇas in honour of the manes), which are sanctioned by scriptures, are indispensable. These must be performed, so that the soul of the dead persons, may attain higher states, such as salvation etc. Such actions, are sāttvika.
Those, who while performing (yajña) sacrifice, worship Lord Gaṇeśa and Navagraha (nine planets) etc., according to
ordinance of scriptures, without any desire for fruit, actually worship the scripture, in the same way, as a chaste wife of even a demon, attains salvation, not because, she has served her demon-husband but because, she has obeyed the Lord, the saints and the scriptures. In the twenty-fifth verse of the ninth chapter, the worship of gods, has been mentioned to outline the fate of worshippers, while in this verse the worship of gods, has been mentioned to judge, the faith of a worshipper. So the term 'Yajante', has been used here. Thus the Lord, explained that a man worships, a deity according to his conviction, or faith.
**Appendix**—The 'Sāttvika' persons who worship the gods, go to the gods after death, the Rājasa persons who worship demigods (gnomes) and demons, go to them and the 'Tāmasa' persons who worship ghosts and evil spirits, join the ghosts and evil spirits (Gītā 9/25).
In the Gītā, the term 'Yajña' has a wide range, within which religious sacrifice, charity, austerity, vow and performance of duty etc.,—all are included (Gītā 4/24-25). Therefore here also within the term 'Yajante'—performance of all duties and actions should be included, out of which, Yajña (religious sacrifice) is important. 'Pretānbhūtagaṇāmścānye'—Our manes are ghosts for others and the manes of others are ghosts for us. Worship to manes is not 'Tāmasika', but worship to ghosts is 'Tāmasika'.
*Link:—The Lord in the preceding verses, described those people, who casting aside ordinances of the scriptures, offer worship with faith. They neglect the ordinances because they do not know them. Now He, in the next two verses, describes those who intentionally neglect the ordinances of scriptures, and are also lacking, in faith.*

Hindi(17.76) जिनकी देहरचना सात्त्विक श्रद्धायुक्त होती है उनकी बुद्धि प्रायः स्वर्ग-विषयक रहती है। (77) वे सकल विद्याएँ पढ़ते हैं, उत्तमोत्तम यज्ञक्रियाएँ करते हैं, बहुत क्या कहें वे देवलोक प्राप्त करते हैं;

Those who are imbued with sattva guṇa, the mode of goodness become attracted to activities in purity and goodness and they are devoted to worshipping the Supreme Lord with full faith,
concerned only with the transcendental bliss derived from bhakti or exclusive loving devotion unto the Supreme Lord Krishna, which is completely transcendental to material existence and untainted by darkness and suffering.
Those in raja guṇa or mode of passion offer diabolical rituals to demoniac entities from the physical and astral realms to gain pleasure, power, wealth and fame.
The results are bitter sweet when succeeding and bitterly painful when failing because one has to give something physical in return such as the death of a family member or one's health.
Those in tama guṇa or mode of ignorance pay homage to the ghosts and spirits which give no joy and is filled with pain and anguish.
The results of these three guṇas or modes of material nature are determined directly by whichever one is situated in along with the quality of the faith in which the worshipper is performing, even if it is in accordance with the Vedic scriptures.
Lord Krishna has categorically emphasised and declared that not even the most miniscule modicum of happiness is derived from any activity which is contrary and opposed to the Vedic scriptures; which embody all that is for the highest good for all.
Those who are inimical to the Vedic scriptures which benefit all creation are evil and possess a demoniac nature.
