On verses 17.26–27

The Supreme Lord Krishna explains that the word SAT denotes eternal existence and perpetual goodness. The words sad-bhave exemplifies eternal existence and the words sadhu-bhave exemplifies perpetual goodness.

This is the correct understanding in which SAT is to be comprehended in the Vedas as well as its utilisation by the recitation of SAT in prescribed Vedic rituals performed exclusively by the Vaiṣṇavas and brāhmaṇas.

Similarly the transcendental sound of SAT may be evoked for any auspicious activity ordained by the Vedic scriptures by duly initiated Vaiṣṇava brāhmaṇas in any of the 480,000 types of humans existing throughout creation.

To follow the prescribed Vedic duties of yajña or propitiation and worship by the Vaiṣṇava brāhmaṇas, tapaḥ or austerities by the kṣatriyas, the royal warrior class, and dānaṁ or charity by the Vaiṣyas or merchant class,

are all considered in sattva guṇa or mode of goodness because they are conscientiously following the ordinances and injunctions of the Vedic scriptures.

Thus all such activities are known as SAT denoting perpetual goodness and due to being dedicated to the Supreme Lord they possess auspicious attributes of an eternal nature and for this they are also known as SAT.

Thus the relationship of OM TAT SAT to the Vedas, the performance of prescribed Vedic activities performed by Vaiṣṇava brāhmaṇas and protected by the kṣatriyas while supported by the Vaiṣyas,

clearly and succinctly demonstrates what is factually Vedic in society and what is actually situated in sattva guṇa,

while simultaneously clarifying comprehensively by the logic of opposing parallels what is not Vedic in society and thus doomed to the perdition of exclusion from the ascending orbit of sattva guṇa.

Pronouncing the word Aum knowing its meaning fully, without expectation of the fruits, by performing sacrifice, charity and penance with great love, uttering the name (of the Lord, Brahman alone is propitiated, this is the purport. “The sacrifices which are done without expectation of the fruits are called, verily, Aum tat sat. The Vedas call them performance of actions, since with those words the Brahman is pleased and they gain the experience of the Brahman”, similarly in the Rigveda.

26 "For (denoting) the idea of existence, or the idea of goodness, the (symbol) 'SAT' is employed; so also, for (denoting) a praiseworthy act, the word 'SAT' is, Oh Son of Pṛthā, employed. (380)

The word 'Sat' signifies complete evaporation—disappearance of the counterfeit coin viz. the illusive appearance of this universe and it exhibits in its entirety the nature of Absolute Existence. That 'Sat' undergoes no change whatever on account of place and time, but remains intact as it is throughout eternity. All that is perceptible (to the senses) being 'Asat' (Non-eternal) is not classed under that 'Sat'; that is only known with the attainment of Supreme Brahman (in essence), and the actions sanctioned by (such) 'Sat' get united with Supreme Self and appear as Supreme Brahman itself. All the actions that become Supreme Brahman on account of the letters 'Om' and 'Tat', get merged in and appear as 'Sat' pure and simple. Such is the esoteric application of the word 'Sat' which please note," said Lord Krishna. "It is not I who say this (added Jñānadev). But if I say it is not I who declare it, it will be infected with the taint of duality vis-a-vis Shriranga, and so it is unquestionably God's revelation." "There is one more application of this 'SAT' which puts the Sāttvic and pure actions under obligation, and hear about it. If, while being performed, in the proper way, according to the respective qualifications of the doers, the actions get defective in any way, such defect transforms even a good act into a faulty one in the way any defect in a physical organ makes the entire body come to a standstill or in the way the want of one wheel makes the entire chariot come to a dead halt. On such an occasion chanting the letter 'Om' along with the word 'Tat', with the further help of the word 'Sat', rejuvenates (makes perfect) the defective actions. Thus the symbol 'Sat', removes the defects from the action, and brings to it the glory of 'Sat' like its own self. What is Divine Medicine to a diseased person, or some sort of help to a broken (vanquished) person, the symbol 'Sat' is to the defective action and brings perfection to it. Or, owing to some mistake, if any action takes a wrong path transgressing the enjoinments of the Scriptures, there being no certainty that mistakes would not occur, since it is not uncommon for a wayfarer to miss his way or a scrutiniser (connoisseur) to get confused. There- fore where an action misses its own boundary through thoughtlessness and tends to incur the infamous repute of evil action—at this stage any resort to the word 'Sat'—rather than to the words 'Om' and 'Tat'—brings holiness and purity to such actions. The application of the word 'Sat' to a faulty action confers, O Warrior, benefit upon it, in the way does the rubbing of Paris (परिस) on iron or the joining with the Ganges of a brook, or a shower of nectar on the dead. Such is the glory of this word 'Sat'. In short, recognising the essence of the above exposition, if you keep thinking about that name you will realize that it is nothing else but Supreme Brahman itself. The chanting of the group of the words 'Om-Tat-Sat' takes the being to the place whence arises the entire aggregate that bears name and form. That place is nothing else but the immutable, pure, Supreme Brahman and the symbol of its inherent power is this name ('Om-Tat-Sat'). The sky is its own support, in that way this name has got an uninterrupted support in itself. The sun rising in the sky, sheds light on himself, in that way this (tri-lettered) name sheds light on Supreme Brahman.

'Sadbhāve'—The existence of God, is known as 'Sadbhāva'. The Lord, Who is without attribute and endowed with attributes, Who is formless and also with form, and His incarnations such as Viṣṇu, Rāma, Kṛṣṇa, Śiva, Śakti (Durgā), Gaṇeśa and Sun-god—all are included with in, 'Sadbhāva'. Thus the Lord, Who ever exists everywhere, and Whose names, forms and sports, are innumerable, is 'Sadbhāva', (reality).

'Sādhubhāve'—The noble dispositions, of the mind, such as compassion and forgiveness etc., which have been described in various spiritual disciplines of different sects and which are conducive to God-realization are included in 'Sādhubhāve', (goodness).

'Sadityetatprayujyate'—The term, 'Sat', is used in the sense of Existence Absolute and goodness. It means that the term 'Sat',

is used for the Lord, Who is permanent and unchanging and for, the divine traits such as truth, forgiveness, generosity and renunciation etc., which are helpful in God-realization.

'Praśaste karmaṇi tathā sacchabdaḥ pārtha yujyate'—All noble deeds, which are conducive to God-realization, are said to be praiseworthy. Similarly, all other rites, such as initiation of sacred thread, marriage etc., as well as, charity and construction of wells, temples, hospitals etc., which are sanctioned by scripture, are included in 'Praśaste karmaṇi' (praiseworthy acts). The word 'Sat', is used, in the sense of all these praiseworthy acts.

Appendix—Existence of God is called 'sadhāva' which never ceases to be—'nābhāvo vidyate sataḥ' (Gītā 2/16). Generally all believers accept that there has always been a singular power which is above all, is the controller Supreme and is also immutable. How can the universe, which is kaleidoscopic and which disappears, be said to be 'is (existent)' or permanent? The reason is that the world, which is perceived and known by senses and intellect etc., neither existed in the past nor will exist in future and at present is also perishing—this is everyone's experience. The senses and intellect etc., by which the world is perceived and known also belong to the same class to which the world belongs. Even then it is surprising that the world in spite of being non-existent ('not') appears to be existent ('is') and permanent (constant). Had the universe really existed, it would have not changed; and when it changes, it means that it is non-existent. Therefore in fact this existence, instead of being of the world and of the body, is of God, in Whose light the non-existent world appears to be existent ('is').

The noble dispositions of the mind are called 'sādhu bhāva'. The term 'sat' has been used for noble dispositions because they are conducive to God-realization. The noble dispositions viz., virtues and good conduct are divine traits (divine nature). The divine nature is 'sat' (real) while the demoniac nature is 'asat' (unreal). All the means which lead to salvation are 'sat'

and all the actions which are conducive to bondage are 'asat'. All evils and misconduct are 'asat' while their renunciation is 'sat'. Renunciation of the 'asat' (unreal) is 'sat' and acceptance of the 'sat' is also 'sat'. In fact as much need as there is of the renunciation of the unreal, so much need is not there of owning (adopting) the real. Without renouncing the unreal, the real tacked from outside does not subsist. But by renouncing the unreal, the real is revealed. Therefore by renouncing the unreal, the real is realized.

All the virtuous actions ordained by the scriptures such as sacrifice, penance, charity, pilgrimage, vow or fast, worship and marriage etc., being praise-worthy are 'Satkarma'. But if these praise-worthy actions have no affinity with God, they instead of being called 'sat' (the real), remain merely actions ordained by the scriptures. Though devils and demons also perform virtuous actions such as penance etc. Yet they lead to bondage and become 'asat' actions because they are performed with a selfish motive and are meant to harm others (Gītā 17/19). By those actions even if the Abode of Brahmā is attained, they have to return there from (Gītā 8/16). Men, who work for God-realization, don't meet with an evil end (Gītā 6/40) because its fruit is 'sat' (real). The actions which are performed for the welfare of all beings, by renouncing selfishness and pride, are indeed praise-worthy 'Satkarma'.

(17.392) सच्च्छब्द उस असत्स्वरूप को मिटाता है और अपने सत्त्व के बल से उसे सद्भाव की स्थिति को ला पहुँचाता है। (17.393) दिव्यौषधि जैसे कृश रागी की सहकारिणी होती है वैसे ही न्यूनांग कर्म के लिए सच्छब्द है;

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
