“पुनश्च कर्मादितिकर्तव्यताविधानार्थमर्थवादमाह - ॐ तत्सद इत्यादिना | परस्य ब्रह्मणो हेतानि नामानि - ओतं जगद् यत्र स्वयं च पूर्णो वेदोक्तरूपोऽनपुचारतश्च | सर्वैः शुभैश्चाभियुतो नचान्यैरोन्तदसदित्येनमतो वदन्ति || इति हृग्वेदखिलेषु | द्वितीयपादतत् शब्दार्थः | सदेव सोम्येदमग आसीत् | इति च | तेन, ब्रह्मणा | आत्मपूजार्थम् | वेदविधिर्व्यञ्जनम् | मा तुक्ता पुरस्तात् ||” - Once again actions and the modalities that are ought to be performed are spoken by mentioning ॐ तत् सत् etc. which, verily, are names of the Supreme Brahman. Here in this world He is spread over in all entirety as Aum, therefore made reference in Vedas with respect. Thus, in the subsidiary chapter of Rigveda - He is सत्, since without any defects and is completely auspicious - “He (sat), verily, my dear, was there in the beginning”, “Aum, that is Brahman”. For propitiation of the Self by indicating the Vedic injunctions and Himself being referred subsequently.

English19 "When, with silly obstinacy, austerity is practised, for self-torture or to encompass another's ruin, it is proclaimed as Tamas-dominated. (254)
(Now as regards one practising Tāmas austerities). He harbours, Oh Dhananjaya, the wind of foolishness and treats his body as an enemy. He applies the flame of the five sacred fires (पंचाग्नि) to his person and kindles such internal heat as would burn the body. He burns fragrant gum (गुगुळ) on his head, and pricks his back with iron hooks and burns his body by keeping blazing fire all around himself. He suspends breathing, and in vain observes fasts, and also inhales smoke with head hanging downwards. He stands on the rocky embankment of a river, its (icy) cold water reaching as far as his neck, and tears out his own flesh. In this way he inflicts self-torture in various ways, Oh Dhananjaya, and practises austerities solely for the purpose of causing destruction of others. A big and heavy boulder getting dislodged from its position crashes down (from a great height), gets broken into fragments, and in addition crushes down whatever comes in its way. In that way he causes torture to the happily abiding soul, and practises austerities for the glory of conquering others. The austerities that emerge out of such dreadful torture of one's body are called Tamas-austerities, O Kirīti. I have thus made clear to you how the three kinds of austerities classified according to the Sattva and other Gunas take place. Now as the occasion demands I shall tell you the aspects of the three classes of charity. Here also charity is divided into three categories on account of the three Gunas. Hear first about the Sattva-dominated one.

English'Mūḍhagrāhenātmano yatpīḍayā kriyate tapah'—In a tāmasika
person, delusion predominates. Such a person performs tāmasika sacrifice, out of delusion and obstinacy, by torturing his own self i.e., body and mind etc.
'Parasyotsādanārtham vā'—Such a person, performs penance in order to cause injury to others, and to destroy them, even if he himself has to suffer. Such a person, can perform penance by tolerating excessive heat and cold and observing fasts also, by his own sweet will.
'Tattāmasamudāhṛtam'—Such penance, which is performed, in order to cause injury to others, is called tāmasika.
[A sāttvika person, who performs penance with utmost faith, having no desire for its fruit, deserves to be called, a man. A rājasika person, who performs penance in order to win respect, honour and reverence, does not deserve to be called a man, because even birds and beasts, like respect and honour etc., and they have no show or ostentation. The tāmasika people, are inferior, even to birds and beasts, because they cause injury to others even by self-torture while the birds and beasts, do not cause injury to others, suffering self-mortification.]
Appendix—In 'mūḍhagrāheṇa' there is unalloyed 'tamogunā' (the mode of ignorance), but in 'parasyotsādanārtham', 'rajogunā' (the mode of passion) is also mixed. Delusion is 'tamogunā' and selfishness and anger etc., are 'rājasa'. Anger evolves from 'rajogunā' and then is transformed into 'tamogunā'—'krodhād-bhavati sammohaḥ' (Gītā 2/63).
Link:—Now the Lord in the next three verses, mentions the threefold division of charity (gift).

Hindi(17.254) हे धनुर्धर!

Swami Ramsukhdas · Modern
Now Lord Krishna explains the austerities that are of tama guṇa or mode of ignorance.
The word mūḍha means foolish. The word grāheṇa means endeavour.
Those who foolishly endeavour are the ignorant. Those who torture and give pain to themselves and diabolically cause injury and suffering to others are depraved and their dark resolves are at the pinnacle of nescience.
Whatever activity they enact by such convoluted resolves regardless of success or failure is in the darkness of tama guṇa.
