On verses 15.3–4

The jīvas or embodied beings immersed in samsāra or the perpetual cycle of birth and death are unable to comprehend this Aśvattha or banyan tree and its symbolism.

It is impossible for them to understand that this tree symbolising material existence has its root above in Satyaloka with Brahma

and its branches descending downwards are all the innumerable jīvas or embodied beings throughout all of creation

and that humans are its terminals from where there are branches spreading upwards as well determined by karma or reactions to actions based upon following or ignoring the injunctions and prohibitions of the Vedic scriptures,

which apply when one finally achieves a human form out of the millions of different plants, birds, fish and animal species.

As a human one is quickly indoctrinated into samsāra with the conceptions of I am. I am a man. I am a king. I am the son of this person. I am the wife of that person. I am beautiful. I am great, etc., etc.

Such “I am” conceptions keeps one locked in samsāra and causes one to be fully occupied with mundane concerns and worldly affairs appropriate to such conceptions.

Such persons look upon their bodily conceptions as their very self and are completely oblivious that they are factually eternal beings possessing an ātma or immortal soul.

They perceive not that they can gradually wean themselves from this ancient tree by renunciation of the three guṇas or modes of material nature and detachment from the objects of the senses.

Neither do they comprehend that the ātma is separate and distinct from the physical body. Nor can they differentiate that the ego is not the physical body and the ātma is not the ego.

Bewildered by illusion they believe what is unreal to be real and what is real they cannot perceive. The origin and source is unfathomable to them and so deluded they remain in ignorance.

This Aśvattha tree with roots above and branches below that keeps the jīva enslaved in samsāra can only be destroyed by the sword of non-attachment to objects of the senses.

This renunciation arises from bhakti or exclusive loving devotion to the Supreme Lord Krishna which is the highest good and apex of all to be attained by every jīva and paramount to every other conceivable activity in existence throughout all of creation.

Demolishing this strong and durable Aśvattha tree by the sharp weapon of detachment from sense objects produces dislike and disdain for sense gratification,

which creates a desire for pure, sublime spiritual experiences, which when one attains can no longer be subjected to the influence of the three guṇas or modes of material nature.

How can such a state of consciousness manifest and detachment from the guṇas which causes delusion be guaranteed?

Lord Krishna has already previously confirmed in chapter VII.VII: That there is nothing superior to Him. In chapter VII.XIV: That those who surrender unto Him alone can surmount the three guṇas.

In chapter IX, X: That material nature is operating under His control. In X.VIII: That He is the origin and source of all material and spiritual worlds.

So let glorious propitiation and devotion be given unto the Supreme Lord Krishna as He alone is the sole refuge of all living entities.

Inasmuch as all material impressions, instincts and influences arise from contact with the three guṇas proceeding from prakṛti the material substratum pervading physical existence which is controlled by Him,

it is logical to understand that by Him they can also be transcended.

The question that naturally comes to mind is “how?”.

The word prapadye means “surrender”.

In VII.XIV is stated prapadyante or have surrendered. In this verse a variant is stated as prapadye yataḥ which by the grammatical rules of Panini can be interpreted as meaning - by a mere step of surrendering unto Him –

spiritual impressions, instincts and influences are activated and awaken in such a one. They will manifest as spontaneous impulses arising with frequency in the heart and dispel all nescience.

They are ancient - because they embody the collective consciousness of all the Mumukṣas or achievers of Mokṣa or liberation from material existence since time immemorial,

who surrendered and took refuge of the Supreme Lord Krishna or His authorised incarnation and expansion as revealed in Vedic scriptures and were released forever from the bondage of samsāra.

3 “Here (however) is its (real) form as aforesaid not encountered: neither its end, nor its beginning, nor again its static middle. This Ashvattha with its roots firmly infixed, one should first cut down with the hard weapon of ‘Non-attachment’: (210)

Oh Kiriti, here will arise in your mind a doubt—whether there could exist any means through which such a big tree could be uprooted,—a tree whose top branches have reached the very region of God Brahmadev, while the root is infixed in the formless Supreme Brahman at the top—a tree, the branches at the base of which have pierced the very earth, while the branches growing at the middle form the human order. Do not harbour any such doubts, as to how such a vast and strong tree could be felled down. It will hardly involve any trouble to cut down this tree. Is it ever necessary (physically) to drive out a (imaginary) goblin in order to remove children’s fright? Does it ever involve any trouble to pull down the fortified city of the Gandharvas (गंधर्वनगरी—a fanciful city in the cloud-land) or to break the horns of the hare, or to pluck the flower of the sky? In that way, know ye Warrior, this world tree is an unreality. Wherefore the fear to destroy it? What we described as the branches and the roots (of the world tree) is like filling the house with the progeny of a barren woman. Could the talks in a dream be ever realized in the awakened state? In that way, the story about the tree is as feeble (as the dream). Had it not been like this as described and on the contrary had the roots of the tree as also the tree been really firm, who is there, born away us, (संताने) who could dare uproot it? Could the sky ever disappear merely by puffing it out? Therefore, O Dhananjaya, the form of the tree we described is all an illusion, like serving to a king, clarified butter (prepared from the milk) of a tortoise. Lakes of mirage (water) appear to the vision (as existing) only from a distance: could rice and plantain be grown on that water? If Nescience itself is unreal, much more so must be the effects resulting from it. Considered from this correct standpoint, the world-tree proves wholly unreal. The tree is said to be endless, and in one sense it is true. Could slumber ever come to an end so long as there is no awakening (from the sleep)? Or could there be a dawn, while yet it is night and it (night) has not ended? In that way, so long as the illusion is not removed by right thinking (विवेक), there would be no end to the world-tree-Ashvattha. So long as the stormy wind does not stop blowing and get calm, there must roll unceasingly (over the ocean) innumerable waves. With the Sunset disappears the illusive mirage; or the light disappears when the lamp (flame) is sniffed out. In that way it is only when the knowledge, (which devours pristine Nescience) stands out (arises), that there is an end to the world-tree, and not till then. Similarly it (the tree) is said to be beginningless and if viewed from that standpoint, it is not an imputation (आठ), but (is) a fact. There is not a particle of reality in this world-tree. Therefore, how could there be any beginning for a thing that exists not at all. It would be reasonable to attribute beginning to a thing that really is created somewhere: but where could there be a beginning for a thing which never existed at all. How could there be a mother for one who is never born at all? In short, there being no world-tree at all, it proves itself to be beginningless. How could there exist any horoscope for a son born of a barren mother? How could one imagine the existence of blue ground in the sky? Who could pluck the stem of a sky-flower? Therefore, how could there be a beginning for the world-tree which exists not at all? The non-existence of an earthen pot is self-established (axiomatic), so long as one is not prepared at all (out of clay): so is this tree, entire with its roots, without a beginning (it being non-existent). In this way, Oh Arjuna, just see; it has neither a beginning nor an end: there is merely a semblance of its existence in between but it is all a false one. The worldly existence (tree) like the mirage, which neither starts from the Brahman mountain, nor goes and enters into the sea, but is felt as existing in between, has neither a beginning nor an end. In fact it never exists at all. The novelty of the existence of such (mundane existence) is falsely felt at times. The man of Nescience feels (as real) the mundane existence in the way is felt the existence of a multicoloured rainbow. The (tree of) worldly affairs deludes the vision of the ignorant (by making them believe in its existence) just as a skilful actor deludes the spectator (by playing different roles in different costumes). The sky appears dark-coloured (श्यामिका) even though it is not so; yet it appears so only momentarily (that state not lasting long). An unreal thing seen in a dream is considered real (in that state); yet is that (feeling) capable of achieving any permanence and continuity? In that way its (world-tree's) momentary semblance is also unreal. It appears to the vision as existing, yet it cannot be grasped (even if one tries to grasp it) like the reflections in water of the pranks of a monkey. The semblance comes and goes so rapidly, that its speed cannot be compared even to the fickleness of the ripples on water or to the quick movements of lightning. One cannot know if the stormy wind at the close of summer (Grishma season) is coming from the front or from the back: similar is the state of this world-tree. In short it has neither a beginning nor an end; it has neither any form nor any state. Why then should there be any trouble in felling it down? This unreal tree grows continuously (without stop) on account of one's nescience: therefore, O Kiriti, cleave it with the weapon in the form of the knowledge of Supreme Self. Otherwise, the greater use you make of remedies other than that of the Knowledge of Supreme Self—the more entangled you will get in the meshes of the tree, and when once (you are) so entangled there will be no limit to your wanderings up and down amongst the branches. Therefore, hue down its (the tree's) root—the nescience—completely, with the real knowledge of the self. It is sheer waste of energy to try and collect sticks to kill an (illusory) serpent (created in imagination out of a rope. (It would be like) one getting drowned in a real streamlet while running about in search of a raft for crossing over the river Ganges in the form of a mirage. In that way (it is like this that) while devising means of destroying the unreal world-affairs, one should experience a reverse and have to face the strong wind in the form of the notion, 'the world-affairs are all real'. The only remedy to heal up a wound caused in a dream is to awake. In that way, Oh Dhananjaya, Knowledge is the only sword to cut down the root viz. the Nescience. One's intellect ought to secure an ever new and unbreakable strength of asceticism, so that one can easily handle the same (sword). With its advent asceticism discards the triad (Religion, Riches and Passions) in the way a dog vomits out foul and undigested food. The sweep of asceticism should be so strong that it should make one feel nausea for everything. Then should be cast off the covering in the form of the conceit for the body, and this weapon of knowledge should be held firmly in the hand (palm) of the inward perception. It (the weapon) should be rubbed on the whetstone of discrimination and sharpened with the notion, “I am myself Supreme Brahman”, and cleansed with the polish of the realization of the Self. Even after this, one should weigh ones own strength by holding it (weapon) in the firm grip of his fist in the form of resolve and then try it once or twice. Then one should balance it in his hand with the strength of contemplation. When the weapon and the wielder have become one by constant contemplation, then there would then be nothing (in the universe) that can withstand its onslaught. The weapon in the form of the Knowledge of Supreme Self, will not, with its sharpness in the form of non-dualism, allow the world-tree to exist anywhere, in the way the wind at the beginning of Sharat (autumn) season clears the sky of all clouds, or just as the sunrise devours darkness, or just as the state of awakening does not allow the dreamy state to survive. In that way, the sharpness of the weapon in the form of the realization of the Self will do its work. Then would cease to appear altogether, the top-roots as also the tuft of the down-wending branches etc, just as the mirage ceases to appear in the moonlight. In this way, Oh Master Warrior, should be cloven clean, with the weapon of the knowledge of the Supreme Self, the world-tree Ashvattha of the top roots.

'Na rūpamasyeha tathopalabhyate'—In the first verse of this chapter, the tree of creation, has been called imperishable, and in the scriptures also, it is mentioned, that persons who perform virtuous actions, in order to reap their fruit, enjoy mundane and heavenly pleasure, in abundance. Having heard such statements, a person, feels that the human world and paradise, are pleasant and permanent. So he desires sense-objects, and is filled with insatiable desires, he holds that there is nothing else, beyond sensual enjoyments (Gītā 2/42; 16/11). An ignorant person, has this feelings so long as, he has ego, attachment and desire with the world or body. But the Lord declares, that when a striver, perceives it, by separating the self from the world i.e., by renouncing his affinity for it, he does not perceive it as imperishable and pleasant, but he perceives it as perishable and unpleasant.

'Nānto na cādirna ca sampratiṣṭhā'—The world, has neither its end or origin nor, in space and time. As a person, while visiting an exhibition, being enamoured of its objects, does not know its beginning and end, without going out of it, so does a person not know the origin and end of the world, by having attachment to it.

All the means (senses, mind and intellect), to perceive the origin and end of the world, are fragments of the world. So they cannot know the world, in the same way as a jar of clay, cannot absorb the earth, within it. Therefore, when a man (the self), separates himself from the world (mind, intellect and sense), he knows the world, in reality.

In fact, the world has no independent existence. It is only a process of birth and death. This process, appears as its existence. If a further thought, is given to it, it will be experienced, that there is no birth, there is only decay. When it does not stay, in one form even for a moment, how can it be called existent? It seems to exist, because of a striver's attachment, to the world. As soon as, this attachment is renounced, the seeming existence, disappears and a striver realizes the self or God.

An Important Fact

No scientist has perceived the beginning, the middle and the end of universe, till today, nor can he perceive it. If a person, having attachment to the world and enjoying mundane pleasure, wants to perceive the beginning, middle and end, of it all, his efforts, are in vain.

In fact, there is no need to perceive the beginning, the middle and the end of this universe, there is need to renounce, the assumed affinity, for it.

Philosophers differ in their opinions, whether the universe is without beginning and perishable, or beginningless and infinite or illusory, but all of them agree, that our affinity for it is unreal

(assumed), which must be, renounced.

An easy way to renounce this assumed affinity, for the world is that materials (mind, intellect, senses, body, riches and property etc.,) acquired from the world, should be used in rendering service, to the world.

All mundane materials, such as women, sons, honour, praise, wealth, property, long life, good health and abundant pleasure cannot satisfy a person, because he (the self), is imperishable, while all the mundane pleasures are perishable. How can the imperishable be satisfied, by the perishable?

'Aśvatthamenam suvirūḍhamūlam'—It is because of ego, attachment and desire with it that the universe (having no foundation), seems firm rooted.

Attachment and senses of mineness to beings, objects and actions etc., strengthens worldly bondage. Because of his attachment one identifies himself, with them. After amassing riches he thinks 'I am very rich' but when his wealth is lost he holds that he has been ruined. Out of greed, he performs forbidden actions and commits sins, in order to, hoard money. Then he has a conviction that he cannot earn money without foul means, as falsehood, fraud and dishonesty etc. He ceases to think, that the money earned by foul means, will have to be left behind it while evils, such as falsehood, fraud and dishonesty etc., will accompany him, to the next world* and will lead him to a miserable life, here as well as, hereafter. Not only this, but he also instigates other people, to earn money by foul means, calling it a business by justifying falsehood and fraud etc., for it. This evil feeling (faith), is a firm root of the branches of, ego, attachment and desire. This evil feeling (faith), makes him evil,

* When a person gives up his body, the wealth remains lying in shelves, animals remain tied here and there, his wife accompanies him to the gare, sons go upto the cremation ground, the body to the pyre while it is only one's righteousness (Dharma) which accompanies him to the next world.

because the Lord declares, 'What a man's faith is, that verily, He is' (Gītā 17/3).

The branches of ego, attachment and desire, are so firmly rooted, that they cannot be, totally rooted out, through study of the scriptures, or by listening to divine discourses and thinking. Strivers, while listening to religious discourses, think of renouncing these evils, but in practical life they find themselves, unable to renounce these. The reason is, that they want to renounce these as well as enjoy mundane pleasures, from persons and objects etc., like a greedy person, who wants to relish a sweet dish mixed with poison and yet escape from poison. But it is impossible. When a striver, has no desire at all to derive any kind of pleasure from the world, this firm rooted tree of the universe is naturally rooted out.

Further, a striver believes that it is very difficult to get rid of these evils, of identification, attachment and desire. But the fact, is that these defects automatically, vanish, they cannot stay, as these are by nature transient. So a striver should never think that it is difficult to renounce, them.

'Asaṅgaśāstreṇa dr̥dhena chittvā'—The Lord declares, that though the tree of creation is firm rooted, it can be cut off with a strong sword (axe) of non-attachment. A man may be attached to a place, person, object or circumstance etc., because of their attraction, and because of the desire to derive pleasure out of these. Absence of attachment, is non-attachment or dispassion. This dispassion, can be of two kinds (i) Common (ii) Strong. Strong dispassion is also called 'Uparati' (indifference) or 'Para vairāgya'.

| **An Important Fact** **Pertaining to Dispassion** | | --- |

A man, may abandon his house and property physically, but if he attaches importance to them, from his heart or if he feels proud that he is a renouncer, it means that he is not dispassionate.

When he has not the least attachment to them, and he has no attraction towards them—this is dispassion.

Secondly, he should be detached from his so-called parents, wife, sons, brothers and friends etc. He should accept his affinity, for them in order to render service to them, rather than to have a desire to acquire anything from them for his selfish motive.

Thirdly, there is detachment from the body. This is real detachment. If there is attachment for the body, it means that there is attachment for the entire universe, because the body is the seed, of the entire universe. Absence of identification with the body, is detachment (dispassion), from the body.

In order to renounce this identification with the body (egoism), first a striver, should renounce the desire for honour, praise and riches etc. Even when a striver, renounces the desire for honour, praise and fame etc., here, because of his subtle desire, he wants his name and fame to be maintained, through memorials etc., after his death. All these desires must be renounced. Sometimes a striver, is envious or jealous of others. That envy or jealousy should also be renounced.

Even when, these desires are renounced, a man may remain attached to his body, even after he has given up the body. So the bones of the dead body are immersed into the Ganges, after the body is burnt, so that one may meet with a good fate. When a man through discrimination, realizes, that the sentient soul is different, from the insentient body, his attachment or sense of 'mine', is renounced. When both desire and attachment are renounced, ego almost vanishes i.e., it remains, only in its, subtle form. It totally perishes, when a devotee attains God-realization or real exclusive devotion, to God.

When a man realizes, 'I am neither body nor the body is mine,' desire, attachment and identification—the three perish. This is real detachment or dispassion.

All desires (lusts) perish, from the inner sense of the striver,

who is dispassionate, from within. A devotee possessing strong dispassion, having no affinity for the insentient objects, such as the body, senses, mind and intellect etc., wishes everyone to be happy, free from disease and suffering and to attain benediction.

T is the knower and the onlooker, while the entire universe, including the gross, subtle and causal bodies, to be known and seen. T, is imperishable, while the universe and the body, are perishable. He who realizes this distinction, cuts off this tree of creation, with a strong axe of non-attachment. When a man, does not attach importance to this discrimination, the tree of creation, seems to be firm-rooted.

Worldly objects cannot be totally destroyed, but attachment to these can be totally, renounced. This detachment, is known as cutting off this tree.

The universe ceases, to be, when attachment to it, is renounced. Only a thing or person, we have no real affinity for, can be renounced (cut off). A man (the self), is sentient and imperishable, while the universe is insentient, and perishable. So his affinity for the universe is unreal, it is assumed, by an error. He, who is really detached, gets detached. We should accept the fact, that we have no attachment for the universe. Howsoever, firm-rooted the world may be, if we do not accept our affinity for it, it is naturally cut off, because this affinity, is merely assumed. So a striver, should doubtlessly believe that he has no affinity at all for the world, even though he may not perceive it, in practical life.

A man, himself has accepted this affinity for the body, and the world. So, it is his responsibility, to cut it off. Therefore, the Lord is exhorting us, to cut it off.

Some Easy Means of Renouncing this Affinity for the World**

(1) Render service to the world, with the material acquired

from the world, without any selfish motive.

1. (2) Renounce desire, for mundane pleasure and prosperity. 2. (3) Renounce dependence, on the world totally. 3. (4) Renounce a sense of 'I' and 'mine', with the body and the world. 4. (5) Stick firmly to reality, 'I am God's; God is mine.' 5. (6) Have a resolve, 'I have to realize God.' 6. (7) Perform your duty, sanctioned by the scriptures scrupulously (Gītā 18/45). 7. (8) Attach importance, to your own experience, that your body, circumstances, strength, ability etc., are not the same, as they were, in your childhood, they have all changed, while you are the same. 8. (9) Do not accept your assumed affinity, for the world.

**Appendix**—The Lord has declared about Himself—'I am the beginning, the middle and also the end of the entire creation' (Gītā 10/20, 32) and here about the world He declares, 'It has neither its end nor origin nor existence.' It means that God exists in the beginning, in the middle and in the end of the creation while the world has no existence either at the beginning or in the middle or in the end viz., the world does not exist—'nāsato vidyate bhāvaḥ' (Gītā 2/16). Therefore there is nothing else besides God.

'Asaṅgaśāstraṇa dṛḍhena chittvā'—Here the term 'chittvā' does not mean 'to cut' or 'to destroy' but it means 'to be detached'. The reason is that this world being God's 'aparā prakṛti' is imperishable. The Self is detached—'asaṅgo'hyayam puruṣaḥ' (Bṛhadā. 4/3/15). The Self is free from attachment to the modes. Attachment to the modes is the root of birth and death—'kāraṇam guṇe saṅgo'sya sadasadyoñjanmasu' (Gītā 13/21). Therefore having realized the detached, untainted, undecaying and immortal nature of the Self, getting established in it, is 'to cut off the world-tree'.

The world seems to exist owing to attachment. The thing, to which a man is attached, seems to be existing and valuable. Without attachment, the world may appear to exist but it is not of any value. Therefore the expression 'asangaśastreṇa dr̥hena chittvā' means—to wipe out attachment to the world totally viz., not to be attached to anyone else besides God and not to assume anything of the entire creation as one's own and for one's own self. In fact the existence of the world does not lead to bondage but attachment to the world leads to bondage. Existence is not an obstacle but attachment is the obstacle. Therefore other philosophers call the world real or unreal etc., but the Lord says that attachment to the world should be renounced. Having given up attachment to the world, the world in its seeming form disappears and it is revealed as the manifestation of God—'Vāsudevaḥ sarvam'.

(15.212) नीचे की ओर भी इसकी अधःशाखाएँ विस्तृत हुई हैं, और मध्यभाग में भी दूसरी, मनुष्यरूपी, जड़ें फैली हुई हैं;

(15.250) और फिर इसकी ऊपर-नीचे की शाखा और उपशाखाओं में कहाँ तक घूमते रहोगे? इसलिए इसका मूल जो अज्ञान है उसे यथार्थ-ज्ञान से छाँट डालो;
