Duryodhana while witnessing the strength of the Pāṇḍavas army supported by the might of Bhīmā weighed his own armies strength under the command of Bhīshma

and perceiving the mood of his preceptor Droṇāchārya, he could understand the inadequacy in his own troops and the perfection of strength on the Pāṇḍavas side to be victorious and internally this aggrieved him heavily.

Bhīshma seeing all this gave a roar like a lion and blew a mighty, reverberating blast on his conch-shell which was followed by a tumultuous beating of drums, blaring of horns and blasting of conch-shells as if indicative of the victory in order to cheer up Duryodhana.

Immediately upon hearing this Lord Krishna and Arjuna seated in their majestic chariot capable of conquering all the worlds; both seized their conch-shells and reverberated a sound that shook all the worlds.

Thereafter Bhīmā, Yudhisṭhīra, Nākula and Sahadeva and the rest of the mahā-rathas of the Pāṇḍava army blew their conch-shells

and the roar which was heard cleaved the hearts of Duryodhana and the army of the Kaurāvas and in their hearts they felt that the battle was already lost.

Thus did Sanjaya narrate to Dhritarāshtra whose only concern was for the success of his son Duryodhana and the Kaurāvas in the battle.

9 'And many others, valiant ones, laying down their life for my sake: attackers with diverse weapons, (and) all adepts in warfare. (109)

'Experts in the art of using weapons or Mantrāvatārs (Born of Mantras) incarnate, (it appears) as if the art of the use of weapons in the wars is only born of them. The attention of all these warriors is centred only in me in the way the heart of a faithful wife never touches any other thing in the absence of her husband. These warriors are such staunch loyalists towards me as to count as nothing, their very lives before our cause. (They) know the secret skill of warfare and skilfully win fame, as if bravery was born of them. In this way there are such fully valorous and innumerable warriors in our army as to make it difficult to count them.

'Anye ca bahavaḥ śūrā madarthe tyaktajīvitāḥ'—Besides the above-mentioned heroes, there are many great chariot-warriors, such as Bāhlīka, Śalya, Bhagadatta, Jayadratha etc., in our army, who

have come here to fight, by staking their lives for me. They may be killed in the war, but they will not run away from the battlefield. How should I express my hearty thankfulness, to them before you?

'Nānāśastrapraharanāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ'—All these heroes are experts in the use of weapons, such as swords, maces, tridents and missiles, such as arrows and javelins etc. They are in everyway, experts in the science of warfare.'

Link:—When Duryodhana by his cleverness could not deceive Dronācārya, who did not say anything, he had a second thought. This thought is described by Sañjaya in the next verse.*

जे शस्त्रविद्यापारंगत । मंत्रावतार मूर्त । हो कां जे अस्त्रजात । एथूनि रूढ ।। १०९॥

हे अप्रतिमल्ल जगीं । पुरता प्रतापु अंगी । परी सर्व प्राणें मजचिलागी । आराइले असती ॥ ११०॥

पतिव्रतेचे हृदय जैसे । पतीवांचूनि न स्पर्शे । मी सर्वस्व या तैसे । सुभटांसी ॥ १११॥

आमुचिया काजाचेनि पाडें । देखती आपुलें जीवित थोकडें । ऐसे निरवधि चोखडे । स्वामिभक्त ॥ ११२॥

झुंजती कुळकणी जाणती । कळे कीर्तीसी जिती । हे बहु असो क्षात्रनीती । एथोनियां ॥ ११३॥

ऐसें सर्वापरी पुरते । वीर दळी आमुतें । आतां काय गणूं यांतें । अपार हे ॥ ११४॥

(1.108) समितिजय, सोमदत्ति इत्यादि और भी बहुत से वीर हैं जिनके बल का अनुमान ब्रह्मा भी नहीं कर सकते। (1.109) ये शस्त्रविद्या में प्रवीण हैं और मन्त्रविद्या के मूर्तिमान अवतार हैं। सब शस्त्रविद्या इन्हीं के कारण जगत् में प्रसिद्ध हुई हैं।

(1.110) जगत् में इनके समान मल्ल नहीं हैं। इनमें पूर्ण प्रताप है, तथापि सबने प्राणों समेत मेरा ही अनुसरण किया है।

(1.111) पतिव्रता का हृदय जैसे पति के सिवा किसी वस्तु का स्पर्श नहीं करता वैसे ही इन उत्तम योद्धाओं का मन मेरी ओर खिंचा हुआ है।

(1.112) ये ऐसे उत्तम और निःसीम स्वामिभक्त हैं कि हमारे कार्य के सामने अपने प्राणों को भी कुछ नहीं समझते।

(1.113) ये सब युद्ध का चातुर्य जानते हैं और अपनी कला से कीर्ति को जीतते हैं। बहुत क्या कहूँ, क्षत्रिय-धर्म इन्हीं से प्रसिद्ध हुआ है।

(1.114) ऐसे सब प्रकार से पूर्ण वीर हमारे दल में हैं। इनकी गणना क्या करूँ? ये अनगिनती है।

'अन्ये च बहवः शूरा मदर्थं त्यक्तजीविताः'—मैंने अभीतक अपनी सेनाके जितने शूरवीरोंके नाम लिये हैं, उनके अतिरिक्त भी हमारी सेनामें बाह्लीक, शल्य, भगदत्त, जयद्रथ आदि बहुत-से शूरवीर महारथी हैं, जो मेरी भलाईके लिये, मेरी ओरसे लड़नेके लिये अपने जीनेकी इच्छाका त्याग करके यहाँ आये हैं। वे मेरी विजयके लिये मर भले ही जायें, पर युद्धसे हटेंगे नहीं। उनकी मैं आपके सामने क्या कृतज्ञता प्रकट करूँ ?

'नानाशस्त्रप्रहरणाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः'—ये सभी लोग हाथमें रखकर प्रहार करनेवाले तलवार, गदा, त्रिशूल आदि नाना प्रकारके शस्त्रोंकी कलामें निपुण हैं; और हाथसे फेंककर प्रहार करनेवाले बाण, तोमर, शक्ति आदि अस्त्रोंकी कलामें भी निपुण हैं। युद्ध कैसे करना चाहिये; किस तरहसे, किस पैतरेसे और किस युक्तिसे युद्ध करना चाहिये; सेनाको किस तरह खड़ी करनी चाहिये आदि युद्धकी कलाओंमें भी ये बड़े निपुण हैं, कुशल हैं।

सम्बन्ध—दुर्योधनकी बातें सुनकर जब द्रोणाचार्य कुछ भी नहीं बोले, तब अपनी चालाकी न चल सकनेसे दुर्योधनके मनमें क्या विचार आता है—इसको संजय आगेके श्लोकमें कहते हैं*।

सप्तैतान् संस्मरेन्नित्यं मार्कण्डेयमथाष्टमम् । जीवेद्वर्षशतं सोऽपि सर्वव्याधिविवर्जितः ॥

* संजय व्यासप्रदत्त दिव्य दृष्टिसे सैनिकोंके मनमें आयी बातको भी जान लेनेमें समर्थ थे— प्रकाशं वाप्रकाशं वा दिवा वा यदि वा निशि। मनसा चिन्तितमपि सर्वं वेत्स्यति सज्जयः ॥
