On verses 1.26–47

Sanjaya frankly speaks to Dhritarāṣṭra at this time saying that Arjuna, who is the most noble minded, the most compassionate, the eternal well-wisher and the most virtuous;

although frequently fraught with difficulties along with his four brothers, instigated by thee and thy son, including horrid acts of treachery against them with intent to kill,

such as attempting to burn them all alive in a specially made house of combustible lac, administering poison and other unworthy deeds as well.

It is surely known to you that by Arjuna the destruction of all your clan is certain due to the fact that he has the support of the Parama Puruṣa, Krishna Himself, by his side.

He felt weak, overcome by his love and extreme compassion for his relatives. He was also filled with fear, not knowing what was Dharma(righteous) and what was Adharma (unrighteous). His mind was distracted by grief at the thought of losing his relatives.

So he cast aside his bow and arrow and sat down on the floor of the chariot as if to fast to the death.

36 "Having slain Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, what joy can be ours, O World-destroyer (Kṛṣṇa)? Arch-felons though they be, for slaying them, sin alone can accrue unto us.” (228)

If I kill the gotrajas it would constitute a hot bed of sins and what is won out of your love to me—will have kept away (from me), the bliss that I enjoy in your love. Should (I) commit family slaughter and thereby commit sins? And then where, how and by what path could we find you again? Just as the bird nightingale would not remain for a single moment on the spot, seeing intense fire spreading out in the garden, or just as the bird Chakor seeing a lake, coveting it with a longing, would leave it without enjoying it and fly away in the same way, as soon as my good works are depleted, I think you will have me at the mercy of a delusion and desert me, utterly and for ever!

'Nihatya dhārtarāṣṭrannah kā pritiḥ syājjanārdana pāpamevāśrayedasmānhatvaitānātātāyinaḥ—We cannot derive even the slightest joy, by slaying the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and the warriors of their army. If we kill them, out of anger or greed, we shall have to repent, because the memory of those kinsmen will obsess us and the grief of their death, will torment us. We cannot get joy in this world, by killing them and sin will accrue, to us in the next world, which will torment us there.

There are six kinds of desperadoes—one who sets fire, who poisons, who murders, who seizes wealth, who usurps kingdoms and those who kidnap others' wives.*

Duryodhana and his companions have committed all these criminal offences. They secretly set fire to the residence, where Pāṇḍavas were expected to be sleeping, they poisoned Bhīma and threw him into water; they made an attempt on the life of Pāṇḍavas; while gambling, deceitfully they deprived Pāṇḍavas of their wealth and kingdom, and in the assembly, Duryodhana insulted Draupadī, by calling her his waiting-maid and persuaded Jayadratha to kidnap Draupadī, and he kidnapped her.

In the scriptures, it is mentioned that there is no sin in killing a desperado (Manusmṛti 8/351). But, it is also mentioned in the scriptures, that non-violence is of great virtue. Therefore, why should we slay our kith and kin, out of anger and greed?

Though Duryodhana etc., being desperadoes, deserve to be killed, yet sin will accrue to us as a result of such action, because they are our kith and kin. It is mentioned in the scriptures, that

* Vasiṣṭha smṛti 3/19

one who kills his kith and kin, is a great sinner. So how can we kill them? Therefore, it is better to break off our relationship with them, rather than to kill them. In the same way, as relationship could be cut off from a son, but he cannot be slain.
