Duryodhana while witnessing the strength of the Pāṇḍavas army supported by the might of Bhīmā weighed his own armies strength under the command of Bhīshma

and perceiving the mood of his preceptor Droṇāchārya, he could understand the inadequacy in his own troops and the perfection of strength on the Pāṇḍavas side to be victorious and internally this aggrieved him heavily.

Bhīshma seeing all this gave a roar like a lion and blew a mighty, reverberating blast on his conch-shell which was followed by a tumultuous beating of drums, blaring of horns and blasting of conch-shells as if indicative of the victory in order to cheer up Duryodhana.

Immediately upon hearing this Lord Krishna and Arjuna seated in their majestic chariot capable of conquering all the worlds; both seized their conch-shells and reverberated a sound that shook all the worlds.

Thereafter Bhīmā, Yudhisṭhīra, Nākula and Sahadeva and the rest of the mahā-rathas of the Pāṇḍava army blew their conch-shells

and the roar which was heard cleaved the hearts of Duryodhana and the army of the Kaurāvas and in their hearts they felt that the battle was already lost.

Thus did Sanjaya narrate to Dhritarāshtra whose only concern was for the success of his son Duryodhana and the Kaurāvas in the battle.

7 'Next, recall to mind, O Foremost of the Twice-borns of those on our side, the most distinguished; they (are) the leaders of my army; I recount them for renewing thy memory:

8 'Thy Honoured-Self and Bhīṣma and Karṇa, and Kṛpa the victor in combat: Aśvatthāman and Vikarṇa, and likewise (Bhūriśravas) the son of Somadatta; (103)

'Now hear the names of the chief and renowned warriors in our army whom I describe as occasions arise. I intentionally mention only such of the various other warriors as are important like ourselves. Here is Bhīshma, son of the Ganges, who is just like the sun in the intensity of his valour and similarly Karṇa who is like a lion to elephants in the form of the enemy. Each one, if he only intends, can put an end to this universe: so also this Kripāchārya, who by himself alone is more than a match for all. Here is the warrior Vikarna and yonder Ashvatthāmā whom the very God of death, Yama also dreads. Here is Somadatti, ever victorious on the battlefield, and many others who are very brave and a limit to whose prowess and valour even the creator Brahmadev does not know.

‘Asmākaṁ tu viśiṣṭā ye tānnibodha dvijottama’—Duryodhana says to Droṇācārya, “O best of the twice-born, you should know that in our army also, there are great chariot-warriors, who are

in no way less valiant and less trained in warfare, rather they are more valiant and better trained.'

In the third verse 'Paśya', and here 'Nibodha' verbs, are used because the army of the Pāṇḍavas is standing in front of them, therefore Duryodhana uses the verb 'Paśya' (behold). But the army of Kauravas, is not in front of Droṇācārya, it is on the side of his back. So Duryodhana, uses the verb 'Nibodha' (Know).

'Nāyakā mama sainyasya sañjñārtham tānbravimi te'—I mention the names of the chief generals, marshals and great chariot-warriors of my army, to draw your attention to them.

'Sañjñārtham' means, that there are innumerable generals, who cannot be named easily. Therefore, I am just drawing your attention, as you know all of them.

In this verse, Duryodhana probably wants to say, that his side is in no way weaker than that of the Pāṇḍavas, but is rather stronger, yet according to political prudence however weak the army of an enemy may be; it should not be regarded as weak. Therefore, one should not have in the least, a feeling of neglect and indifference, towards the enemy. So Duryodhana already described the warriors of the other side, to make Droṇa careful and now he is giving the names of the warriors of his army.

Secondly, after seeing the army of the Pāṇḍavas compact and well disciplined, Duryodhana was overawed and also somewhat afraid. The reason was, that in spite of being smaller there were several righteous persons, and as also Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself, in that army. Righteous persons and God bear their influence on all the creatures, including those having the most sinful conduct, and even on animals, birds, trees and plants. The reason is, that God and righteousness are eternal, while all the temporal powers are transient. Therefore, Duryodhana is also influenced by the army of the Pāṇḍavas. But because of the material and temporal power, he wants to assure Droṇācārya, that their army is superior to that of the Pāṇḍavas. Therefore, they can easily gain victory over the army, of the Pāṇḍavas.
