English47 “Thus spake Arjuna on the battle-field, and, dropping his bow and arrows, sank down on the chariot-seat, his mind convulsed with grief.” (268)
Samjaya then said to King Dhṛitarāṣṭra, “Hear, Pārtha spoke thus to the Lord on the battle-field. Dhanurdhara got greatly perturbed and nervous and immediately jumped out of the chariot. Just as a dethroned prince gets altogether lustreless or just as the Sun in eclipse gets lustreless or just as one who has attained perfection should get infatuated and sink into amour and become helpless, similarly Pārtha appeared extremely distressed when he left his chariot on the battle-field. (He) then threw away his bow and arrow and floods of tears flowed from his eyes. O King, listen, in this way things took place there. After this, seeing Pārtha so much down-hearted, the Vaiku-nthanāth will preach to him (the subject of) true spirituality. This eloquent story, Jnāndev, the servant of Nivrittināth, will narrate and should be heard with intense and curious interest. (275)

English'Evamuktvārjunaḥ saṅkhye rathopastha upāviśat visṛjya saśaraṁ cāpaṁ śokasaṁvignamānasaḥ'—War, is the root cause of all evils. It will destroy a race and will lead us to hell in the next world. By thinking so Arjuna, overwhelmed with sorrow, became firmly determined not to wage war. Arjuna, who had come to the battlefield with great zeal with Gāṇḍīva bow in his hand, put the bow and arrow down, and overwhelmed with sorrow, sat on the seat of the chariot.
The main reason of Arjuna's grief, is that when Lord Kṛṣṇa placed the chariot between the two armies and asked Arjuna, to behold the Kauravas, he saw Bhīṣma and Droṇa standing in front of him. So his attachment was aroused. Thus, he thought about the destruction of his race (which Duryodhana etc., did not perceive being goaded by greed) and the sin, accruing from it. Then he said that, even if the warriors of the hostile army killed him, while he was unarmed and unresisting, that would be for his good. Thus empowered by delusion, Arjuna perceives
good in turning away from war, and even in his death and finally having abandoned his bow and arrow and overwhelmed with grief, sits on the middle seat of the chariot. Thus, we see that it is delusion, which changes a hero's (Arjuna's), great courage to consternation.

* साधक-सजीवनी *
Sanjaya frankly speaks to Dhritarāṣṭra at this time saying that Arjuna, who is the most noble minded, the most compassionate, the eternal well-wisher and the most virtuous;
although frequently fraught with difficulties along with his four brothers, instigated by thee and thy son, including horrid acts of treachery against them with intent to kill,
such as attempting to burn them all alive in a specially made house of combustible lac, administering poison and other unworthy deeds as well.
It is surely known to you that by Arjuna the destruction of all your clan is certain due to the fact that he has the support of the Parama Puruṣa, Krishna Himself, by his side.
He felt weak, overcome by his love and extreme compassion for his relatives. He was also filled with fear, not knowing what was Dharma(righteous) and what was Adharma (unrighteous). His mind was distracted by grief at the thought of losing his relatives.
So he cast aside his bow and arrow and sat down on the floor of the chariot as if to fast to the death.
