Actions are of two types:

One is worldly activities undertaken to maintain and progress the material existence of the physical body such as obtaining food and shelter and material development.

The other is spiritual activities enjoined by the injunctions of the Vedic scriptures such as propitiation to the Supreme Lord, absence of violence to any living being, charity, etc. in short every act without an ulterior motive and without a hopeful gain.

Whosoever being spiritual minded without any motive except for satisfying the Supreme Lord Krishna and without any desire of seeking anything in return from Him,

who offer all their activities as devotion to Him, keeping Him alone as their sole goal and in one-pointed devotion focus their meditation on Him fully

while worshipping Him in all their activities such as chanting His holy names, glorifying Him, offering prayers to Him, prostrating before His deity form, hearing about His Līlās or divine pastimes, enlightening others about His glories, etc. as the be all and end all of all existence itself.

To such devotees as these who always are in communion with Lord Krishna in their hearts and minds, He Himself personally becomes their saviour by being their samuddhartā or deliverer from mṛtyu-saṃsāra-sāgarāt or the deadly ocean of the perpetual cycle of birth and death

which is the principle barrier which stops the ātma's or eternal souls of all jīvas or embodied from attaining Him when the end of each physical life has transpired.

- He who propitiates Sri Vishnu considering other gods as His wards and therefore subservient to Him, such one is known as ananya-yogi, sincere single minded Yogi. Since He had said earlier said antavattu phalam tesham - temporary is the fruit for those who propitiation other gods. Here the query is regarding the worship of Sri alone. Because Sri is close to the Lord, the doubt about worshipping her is being specially clarified.

6 "But those who dedicate all actions unto Me, and with Me as their goal, render service unto Me, meditating upon Me in single-pointed concentration (in Yoga):

7 "Of them I become the Liberator from the Ocean of Death and Mundane Existence, in no length of time, O Son of Pṛthā; of them whose thoughts are rooted in Me. (76)

There are those who perform regularly—with pleasure and with the help of their senses of action, actions (duties) falling to their lot as prescribed by the four-castes-religion, following the Scriptures (Codes), abandoning all forbidden actions, and burning all the action-fruit by dedicating it all to me; and further who undoing all their actions also thus dedicating them all to me, and taking no other direction than the one towards me, ignoring the urge of all contrary feelings and sentiments issuing from the body, the tongue, and mind—they thus worship me uninterruptedly and they have become my very home on account of their meditation of me—they that are wholly bent upon establishing communion with me by means of great devotion, leaving off other frail and poor clients (कुळे) like enjoyment of sense-objects and emancipation etc.—such persons as have, with single-pointed devotion, entrusted to me exclusively their very life, mind, and body—how could I speak about them? What words can adequately describe my feelings towards them? In fine I have got to do all they wish for. Briefly speaking, Oh Dhanurdhara, need it be said, how dear a child is to the mother, the child which is born of her? In that way the devotees are dear to me as (to the extent) they are devoted to me. I have as it were taken out a charter to protect my devotees, defeating their enemies. But even without that, the very idea of my devotees being plunged into anxiety for the welfare of their family appears ludicrous. Does the wife of a great (rich) one ever have to go abegging for undressed corn (कोरान)? Similarly my devotees are (like) my wife (body), I feel my honour is at stake whenever they (devotees) are likely to suffer disgrace. Seeing the waves of birth and death storming over the entire world, I fear, my devotees would get frightened, for who is there who would not get confused with fear in the tumult of the ocean of world affairs? Therefore, O Son of Pandu, I come in haste (from time to time) to their places assuming different forms of incarnations. My different names (such as Rāma, Krishna, and others) are, know it, (as it were) thousands of small boats, and keeping them ever ready in the ocean of world affairs, I have become the saviour (of the devotees). Such (of those devotees) as are quite unattached, get clung into protection through meditation while those who are attached to worldly affairs are put on board the small boats. Floats (पेटी) in the form of affection are tied under the bellies of some, and in this way I take all my devotees, over to the other bank in the form of absorption into the essence of Brahman (सायुज्य). Even the four-legged animals that become my devotees are placed in the higher grade in the empire of Vaikuntha (the abode of Lord Vishnu). Therefore, there remains not a single (cause of) anxiety for my devotees: I am ever ready for their protection. And the moment they dedicate their minds to me, they (make me) join and take part in all their sport of worldly affairs. Therefore, O Dhanurdhara, you should commit to your memory the hymn (dictum) that it is only when one follows the path of devotion, that one becomes a great devotee.

[In the fifty-fifth verse of the eleventh chapter, out of the five marks of a devotee, having single-minded devotion, there are three expressions (Matkarmakṛt, Matparamaḥ and Madbhaktaḥ), in the positive and two (Saṅgavarjitaḥ and Nirvairaḥ) in the negative aspect. Here also, the same expressions have been used, in a different manner, in this verse—

(1) The expression 'Sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi sannyasya,' stands for 'Matkarmakṛt'.

(2) The term 'Matparāḥ', stands for the term 'Matparamaḥ', (looks on Me as Supreme God).

(3) The expression 'Ananyenaiva yogena', denotes 'Madbhaktaḥ', (devoted to Me).

* vadanti tattattvavidastattvam yajñānamadvayam brahmīti paramātmīti bhagavāniti śabdyate

(Śrīmadbhā. 1/2/11)

'The enlightened exalted souls call the Divinity, which is knowledge personified and unparalleled, by these three names—Brahma, Paramātmā and Bhagavān.'

(4) Those devotees, who remain absorbed in Him with single-minded devotion, become 'Saṅgavarjitaḥ' (free from attachment).

(5) When, they become free from attachment, they become 'Nirvairaḥ' (without enmity), and also free from other evils such as envy, jealousy etc. In order to attach importance to this feeling of 'freedom from enmity' the Lord while describing the marks of devotees who have attained perfection, in the thirteenth verse, first of all mentions 'Adveṣṭā' (freedom from ill-will or hatred). Therefore, a striver should not bear the least ill-will to anyone].

'Ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi sannyasya'—The term 'Tu' (but), has been used, in order to emphasize the fact that worship of the Lord with attribute, is easier than that of the attributeless Absolute.

Though the term 'Karmāṇi' (actions), is in plural, and so it stands for all actions, yet the adjective 'Sarvāṇi' has been used so that all actions—mundane (for the maintenance of the body and of earning livelihood), as well as spiritual (adoration and meditation etc.,) and other prescribed actions performed through body, speech and mind may be included (Gītā 9/27).

Here, by the expression 'Mayi sannyasya', the Lord does not mean to say, that actions should be physically renounced, because none can ever remain, for even a moment without performing action (Gītā 3/5; 18/11). Also, abandonment of action, sanctioned by scriptures, or out of delusion, is declared to be 'tāmasī' (of the nature of ignorance) (Gītā 18/7), and if it is abandoned, because it is painful i.e., from fear of physical suffering, this abandonment is 'rājasika' (passionate) (Gītā 18/8). In this way, affinity for actions cannot be renounced. In order to be liberated, from the bondage of actions, it is necessary to renounce the sense of mine, attachment and the desire for their fruit, because these three bind him.

When a striver aims at God-realization, he has no desire to acquire objects; and by thinking himself of God, he instead of being attached to the body etc., is attached, only to God. When he surrenders himself to God, all his actions, are also surrendered to God.

In the Gītā, actions which are surrendered to God, have been called 'Madarpanakarma', 'Madarthakarma' and 'Matkarma'.

1. 'Madarpanakarma', are those actions, which were started with any other aim but are surrendered to God, either during their performance or after.

2. 'Madarthakarma', are actions which are performed only for God, from the very beginning. They are performed by obeying Him, in order to please and realize Him.

3. 'Matkarma' are all mundane actions (business and service etc.,) and spiritual actions (adoration and meditation etc.,) which are performed, for the sake of God by regarding them as God's.

In fact, all actions should be performed, with the only aim, of God-realization.

A devotee, who performs actions, in the above-mentioned three ways, in order to attain perfection, has not the least affinity for actions, because he has neither desire for fruit nor a sense of doership nor attachment to objects, body, senses, mind, intellect and other actions etc. Actions of a perfect soul, are naturally, surrendered, while a striver, performs actions with the aim of surrendering these to God.

As a Bhaktiyogī, is liberated from the bondage of actions, by surrendering his actions to God, so does a 'Jñānayogī, get liberated, being detached from actions by believing that they are performed by prakṛti (nature).

'Matparāḥ'—It means 'surrender to God, by regarding Him, as most adorable and supreme'. Such a devotee, who adores God with attributes, becomes merely an instrument in His hands.

Therefore, he regards virtuous actions as performed by God. Moreover, he has no desire for worldly pleasures, because it is not his aim. Thus, being free from desires, evil actions, are not performed by him.

'Ananyenaiva yogena māṃ dhyāyanta upāsate'—This expression, means that such a striver adores God, with a single-minded (exclusive) devotion and he wants to attain Him, by depending on Him only. For God-realization they give more rather all importance to Divine grace not to their efforts or discipline. It means that He is both the end and the means of the devotee. Such a devotee chants His name and glory and meditates on Him by having the only aim of God-realization.

On verses 12.6–12.7
