अर्जुन उवाचएवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते
येचाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमाः
arjuna uvācaevaṃ satatayuktā ye bhaktāstvāṃ paryupāsate|yecāpyakṣaramavyaktaṃ teṣāṃ ke yogavittamāḥ||
Arjuna said: The devotees who, with their minds constantly fixed on Youasshownabove adore You as possessed of form and attributes, ( and those who adore as the supreme Reality y K. Vr KL SSS oI ANWR SSE By SRR Qi 0 DOL only the indestructible unmanifest Brahma who is Truth, Knowledge and Bliss solidified) ofthese two types of worshippers who are the best knowers of Yoga? (l
श्री भगवानुवाचमय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते
श्रद्धया परयोपेतास्ते मे युक्ततमा मताः
śrī bhagavānuvācamayyāveśya mano ye māṃ nityayuktā upāsate|śraddhayā parayopetāste me yuktatamā matāḥ||
Sri Bhagavan said: I consider them to be / the best Yogis, who endowed with supreme faith, and ever united through'meditation with Me, worship Me with the mind centred
ये त्वक्षरमनिर्देश्यमव्यक्तं पर्युपासते
सर्वत्रगमचिन्त्यं च कूटस्थमचलं ध्रुवम्
ye tvakṣaramanirdeśyamavyaktaṃ paryupāsate|sarvatragamacintyaṃ ca kūṭasthamacalaṃ dhruvam||
Those, however, who fully controlling all their senses and even-minded towards all, q and devoted to the welfare ofall bein;¢.:cnstantly j adore as their very self the unthinkable; omnipresent, indestructible indefinabie, eternal « immovable, unmanifest andchangelessBrahma they too come to Me
verses 3–4
संनियम्येन्द्रियग्रामं सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः
ते प्राप्नुवन्ति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः
saṃniyamyendriyagrāmaṃ sarvatra samabuddhayaḥ|te prāpnuvanti māmeva sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ||

verses 3–4
क्लेशोऽधिकतरस्तेषामव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम्
अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं देहवद्भिरवाप्यते
kleśo'dhikatarasteṣāmavyaktāsaktacetasām|
avyaktā hi gatirduḥkhaṃ dehavadbhiravāpyate||
Of course, the strain is greater for those whohavetheirmindattachedtothe Unmanifest; for atonement with the Unmanifestisattained with difficulty by those who are centred in the body
ये तु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मयि संन्यस्य मत्पराः
अनन्येनैव योगेन मां ध्यायन्त उपासते
ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi saṃnyasya matparāḥ|ananyenaiva yogena māṃ dhyāyanta upāsate||
On the other hand, those who depending exclusively on Me,andsurrenderingallactions to Me, worship Me (God with attributes), ( constantly meditating on Me withsingle-minded) devotion. (6) Z
तेषामहं समुद्धर्ता मृत्युसंसारसागरात्
भवामि नचिरात्पार्थ मय्यावेशितचेतसाम्
teṣāmahaṃ samuddhartā mṛtyusaṃsārasāgarāt|bhavāmi nacirātpārtha mayyāveśitacetasām||
These, Arjuna, I speedily deliver from the ocean of birth and death, their mind being fixed on Me. CD
मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं निवेशय
निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः
mayyeva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṃ niveśaya|nivasiṣyasi mayyeva ata ūrdhvaṃ na saṃśayaḥ||
Therefore, fix yor mind on Me, and establish your intellect in Me alone; thereafter you will abide solely in Me. There is no doubt about it.
अथ चित्तं समाधातुं न शक्नोषि मयि स्थिरम्
अभ्यासयोगेन ततो मामिच्छाप्तुं धनञ्जय
atha cittaṃ samādhātuṃ na śaknoṣi mayi sthiram|abhyāsayogena tato māmicchāptuṃ dhanañjaya||
If you cannot steadily fix the mind on Me, G Arjuna, then seek to attain Me through the Yoga of repeated practice
अभ्यासेऽप्यसमर्थोऽसि मत्कर्मपरमो भव
मदर्थमपि कर्माणि कुर्वन् सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि
abhyāse'pyasamartho'si matkarmaparamo bhava|madarthamapi karmāṇi kurvan siddhimavāpsyasi||
If You are unequal even to the pursuit of such practice, be intent to work for Me; you shall attain perfection (in the shape of My yealization) even by performing actions for; My sake
अथैतदप्यशक्तोऽसि कर्तुं मद्योगमाश्रितः
सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं ततः कुरु यतात्मवान्
athaitadapyaśakto'si kartuṃ madyogamāśritaḥ|sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṃ tataḥ kuru yatātmavān||
If, taking recourse to the Yoga of My realization you are unable even to do this, then, subduing your mind and intellect etc., relinquish the fruit of all actions
श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं विशिष्यते
ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम्
śreyo hi jñānamabhyāsājjñānāddhyānaṃ viśiṣyate|dhyānātkarmaphalatyāgastyāgācchāntiranantaram||
Knowledge is better than practice (without discernment), meditation on God is superior to knowledge, and renunciation of the fruit of actions is even superior to meditation; for peace immediately follows from renunciation.
अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां मैत्रः करुण एव च
निर्ममो निरहङ्कारः समदुःखसुखः क्षमी
adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṃ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca|nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī||
& who is free from malice towards all ( beings, friendly and compassionate, rid of ‘I’ a ‘mine’, balanced in joy and sorrow, forgiving: bynature, ever-contentedandmentallyunited e with Me, nay, who has subdued his mind senses and body, has a firm resolve, and has UG surrendered his mind and reason to Me, that devotee of Mine is dear to Me
verses 13–14
सन्तुष्टः सततं योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः
मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः
santuṣṭaḥ satataṃ yogī yatātmā dṛḍhaniścayaḥ|mayyarpitamanobuddhiryo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ||
& who is free from malice towards all ( beings, friendly and compassionate, rid of ‘I’ a ‘mine’, balanced in joy and sorrow, forgiving: bynature, ever-contentedandmentallyunited e with Me, nay, who has subdued his mind senses and body, has a firm resolve, and has UG surrendered his mind and reason to Me, that devotee of Mine is dear to Me
verses 13–14
यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः
हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः
yasmānnodvijate loko lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ|harṣāmarṣabhayodvegairmukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ||
He who is not asource ofannoyancetohis « fellow-creatures, and who in his turn does not feel vexed with fellow-creatures,andwho is free from delight and envy perturbation » and fear, is dear to Me
अनपेक्षः शुचिर्दक्ष उदासीनो गतव्यथः
सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः
anapekṣaḥ śucirdakṣa udāsīno gatavyathaḥ|sarvārambhaparityāgī yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ||
He who wants nothing, whoisbothinternally ( and externally pure, is clever and-impartial, and has risen above all distractions, and who renounces the feeling of doership in: all undertaking,—that devotee of Mine is é
यो न हृष्यति न द्वेष्टि न शोचति न काङ्क्षति
शुभाशुभपरित्यागी भक्ितमान्यः स मे प्रियः
yo na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati|śubhāśubhaparityāgī bhakitamānyaḥ sa me priyaḥ||
He who neither rejoices nor hates, nor grieves, nor desires and who renounces both Q good and evil actions and is full of devotion is dear to Me. (7) V
समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयोः
शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः
samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāpamānayoḥ|śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ||
He who is alike to friend and foe, as well as to honour and ignominy, who remains balanced inheatand cold, pleasure and painand other yy contrary experiences, and is free from attachment. (8) f
तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिर्मौनी सन्तुष्टो येनकेनचित्
अनिकेतः स्थिरमतिर्भक्ितमान्मे प्रियो नरः
tulyanindāstutirmaunī santuṣṭo yenakenacit|aniketaḥ sthiramatirbhakitamānme priyo naraḥ||
He who takes praise and reproach alike, and is given to contemplation and contented with any means of subsistence whatsoever, entertaining no sense of ownership and attachment in respect of his dwelling place and full of devotion to Me, that man is dear to Me.
ये तु धर्म्यामृतमिदं यथोक्तं पर्युपासते
श्रद्दधाना मत्परमा भक्तास्तेऽतीव मे प्रियाः
ye tu dharmyāmṛtamidaṃ yathoktaṃ paryupāsate|śraddadhānā matparamā bhaktāste'tīva me priyāḥ||
Those devotees, however, who partakein a disinterested way of this nectar of pious wisdom set forth above, endowed with faith: and solely devoted to Me, they are extremely dear to me
